Editorial direction is the most important area of growth for newsrooms, according to more than half of journalists in Australia and New Zealand.
Social media presence and engagement, financial investment, talent and technology also emerged as key areas of growth.

Media Industry Outlook for 2022
When asked how upbeat they are about the media industry this year, most journalists in Southeast Asia said they are ācautiously optimisticā, according to the Telum APAC Journalism Survey 2022.
This is especially true for countries like Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines. Most Malaysian journalists are split between being ācautiously optimisticā and neutral about the year ahead.
Meanwhile, Indonesian journalists are the most sanguine compared to their regional counterparts. Almost 40% of them are outrightly āoptimisticā.

When asked which media format is expected to grow in importance over the next year, media professionals in Asia Pacific were quick to point to social media and online publications.
Journalists in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand also believe that podcasts will become more prominent, while those in East Asia singled out influencers as the ones to watch.

Aside from Covid-19, journalists in Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and the Philippines all cite local political instability and uncertainty as their greatest concern this year.
Fake news is also top of mind for journalists in Australia and New Zealand, while their counterparts in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China are more worried about geopolitical tension.
