Passion projects, that pay the bills, are sometimes hard to come by. These couple of years, I try to weave in my own stories, into the work we produce especially when the brief has that potential. It’s my own way of working in my ‘passion project’.
This piece we just launched for AIA, meant to be for their internal comms only, dug into my memories of childhood and my maternal grandfather whom I had imagined going to playground with and maybe first day of school, had he not been too busy running the family business.
It’s not perfect but am proud of what the team achieved; from the AIA clients, Charlene and Ron, who got as excited about the concept, to my dear Faith who drew the board and caught that vision, tag-team me during pre-pro, to the actors Danny & Reanne who made my imperfect directorial debut such a breeze, and talented crew on set, Soon Sng, Andy, Soon Lai, Abraham and my editor Michelle, who helped bring this vision from pages of drawing to life.
I don’t know if I will get to do this again so this tribute post might be it. Hopefully, more to come. Also, I am one of those that when it comes to filming products that I believe in, I buy into it.
This is based on a true story of a 26 year old woman, sole breadwinner of her family, who suddenly collapsed and passed away, leaving behind her aged father and a special needs brother. Because she had years ago bought a life insurance policy, with a substantial pay-out, the livelihood of her father and brother was secured. Think about it if you haven’t gotten one.
