Take slow deep breaths to relax and calm your mind. When you do so, two sets of muscles work in tandem to bring air into your lungs and expel air out of your lungs.
When we breathe in, both rib muscles and diaphragm contract to expand your lung cavity to bring air in. When we breathe out, both rib muscles and diaphragm relax to collapse the lung cavity to expel air out of your lungs.
Oxygen from the air that we breathe in passes through the thin walls of the alveoli into the blood vessels. This oxygen is then transported throughout our bodies. At the same time, carbon dioxide in our blood also passes through the thin walls of the alveoli to be expelled out.
