INSTRUCTORS POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025
Tomorrow is your last chance to sign up to Polstjärnepriset – the Course! One of the great instructors that you’ll be able to meet in November is Louise Po***ck, the new trombone professor at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, one of Europe’s foremost music colleges.

Louise has been a faculty member at the Gothenburg University Academy of Music and Drama and performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Zürcher Kammerorchester, Opera Orchestra Gothenburg and the Duisburger Philharmoniker. She was principal trombone for Stuttgarter Philharmoniker for three years. Louise studied at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, Germany, with Branimir Slokar, where she received her BM with distinction. She then went on to study with Henning Wiegräbe at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, Germany (MM).

Andra pris i Eurovision Young Musicians till Polstjärneprisets vinnare ⭐️

Cellisten Hugo Svedberg har vunnit 'silvermedaljen' i Eurovision Young Musicians, Europas största TV-sända tävling för unga klassiska musiker som följs av miljoner TV-tittare. Elva unga musiker från elva europeiska länder deltog i årets tävling som ägde rum i Bodö, Norge. Hugo kvalificerade sig till tävlingen genom att vinna 2024 års upplaga av Polstjärnepriset.

Du kan se finalen och en kort dokumentär om Hugo på lördag den 24 augusti kl 19 på SVT2. Stort grattis Hugo!🥈👏

Second prize in Eurovision Young Musicians for Polstjärnepriset winner ⭐️
Cellist Hugo Svedberg has won the ‘silver medal’ in Eurovision Young Musicians, Europe's largest televised competition for young classical musicians watched by millions of TV viewers. Eleven young musicians from eleven European countries took part in this year's competition, which took place in Bodø, Norway. Hugo qualified for the competition by winning the 2024 edition of Polstjärnepriset.
You can watch the final and a short documentary about Hugo on Saturday 24 August at 7 pm on SVT2. Congratulations Hugo!🥈👏

The Polstjärnepriset Symphony Orchestra discovers the New World!✨

Did you know that when you participate in Polstjärnepriset, you’ll be part of the Polstjärnepriset Symphony Orchestra? As a course participant you’ll be playing alongside other Nordic musicians, including the competitors, and share the stage with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra during the final on 5 January. This year, the two orchestras will take on the final movement of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”.

The following day the Polstjärnepriset Symphony Orchestra will travel on to Stockholm where they will perform the entire symphony on their own at the Stockholm Concert Hall, as well as featuring several other constellations, including string orchestra, sinfonietta and soloist performances.

INSTRUCTORS POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025
With the application for Polstjärnepriset's course approaching (28 August), it’s time to share yet another fantastic Polstjärnepriset instructor with you. 🤩⁠

Icelandic violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson joined the string faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio in 2017 after 17 years of performing with the Pacifica Quartet. He himself graduated from the same conservatory in 1995 and among his teachers were Almita och Roland Vamos. Before moving to Oberlin, Sibbi studied violin in Iceland with the legendary Guðný Guðmundsdóttir. He serves as director of the Cooper International Violin Competition at Oberlin and as the artistic director of Iceland’s Harpa International Music Academy.

One month left to apply to Polstjärnepriset 2025 – the course!✨

One of the wonderful instructors we’ll have with us in November and January is Gitte Marcusson, who taught at Chetham’s School of Music for 16 years and since 2016 has been a professor at the Royal College of Music in London. She is founder and director of Nordic Flute International Summer School as well as being a member of the faculty at Wildacres Flute Retreat, North Carolina USA. Many of her students are holding principal and second positions in orchestras worldwide such as London Symphony, Sidney Symphony and BBC Philharmonic. Besides frequently giving Masterclasses throughout Europe, Gitte is a tutor at Tuscany Flutes and Voksenåsen Summer Academy, Oslo.

INSTRUCTORS POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025
Still doubting about whether to apply to Polstjärnepriset Nordic Edition 2025 – the course (application deadline: 28 August)? Doubt no longer! During the course you'll get valuable input from fantastic instructors.💜

One of them is Malin Broman, who is much in demand as an artistic director, soloist and chamber musician. Born in Sweden, Malin completed her studies in London with David Takeno. A passionate chamber musician she has toured and recorded extensively for the last twenty years as a member of the Kungsbacka Piano Trio, Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble and Nash Ensemble of London. In 2008 Malin was appointed concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Orchestra. During ‘lock-down’ her YouTube video of Mendelssohn´s Octet, where Malin plays all eight parts, went viral. In 2019 she was awarded H.M the King’s medal for services to music.

INSTRUCTORS POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025
This week we have another fantastic Polstjärnepriset instructor to share with you. 🤩

Danish cellist T**e Møldrup has performed across Europe and the United States, South America, Australia, the Middle East and Asia for two decades. Møldrup has performed in venues such as Vienna’s Musikverein, Daiichi Seimei Hall in Tokyo and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. As a soloist, Møldrup has performed with Danish and international symphony orchestras and festivals. Due to his busy concert schedule and his position as a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Møldrup has recently left his position as principal cellist of the Copenhagen Philharmonic, one of Denmark’s top orchestras. He is now continuing this important work as artistic director of the annual Svanekegaarden International Cello Masterclass.

INSTRUCTORS POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025
Participating in the Polstjärnepriset course (deadline: 28 August) gives you the opportunity to get lessons from some wonderful musicians.🤩

One of them is Soon-Mi Chung Barratt-Due, who studied at the Paris Conservatoire and at courses in Gstaad and San Francisco. She was solo violinist with the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra before becoming concertmaster of the same orchestra. A number of works were dedicated to her, including the Thommessen Viola Concerto. CD and TV recordings, festival appearances and soloist activities took her to the USA, Asia and most Central European countries. She teaches at the Barratt Due Music Institute in Oslo, where she teached, among others, Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad, winner of Eurovision Young Musicians 2012.

INSTRUCTORS POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025
The first week of November is the kick-off of Polstjärnepriset Nordic Edition 2025! We’re already looking forward to having young musicians from all over the Nordics here in Vänersborg.

Frøydis Ree Wekre is one of the great instructors who will make the Polstjärnepriset course (application deadline: 28 August) a very fun and educational experience! She has been the solo horn player with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra for decades. From 1991 to 2011 she was professor of French horn and chamber music at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Many of her students play in leading orchestras. She is in constant demand for masterclasses all over the world, is an honorary member of the International Horn Society and has had a large number of compositions dedicated to her by a variety of composers.👏

✨ THE JURY OF POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025 ✨
We proudly present Marko Ylönen as strings representative in the jury of Polstjärnepriset 2025! Cellist Marko Ylönen has occupied numerous roles in the course of his career. A regular soloist with most of the Finnish orchestras, Marko has also appeared with the Camerata Salzburg, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestras of Adelaide, Melbourne and Stavanger, and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. In chamber repertoire he has performed with many of the world’s greatest musicians, at festivals, in Finland and elsewhere. He has also reaped success in many Finnish and international competitions and recorded a large volume of staple and contemporary cello literature. Marko Ylönen was Artistic Director of the Korsholm Music Festival in 2003, 2008 and 2010–2012 and of the LuostoClassic Festival in 2014–2017. He has been Professor of chamber music at the Sibelius Academy since 2009.

✨ THE JURY OF POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025 ✨
We proudly present Katrine Gislinge as the piano representative in the jury of Polstjärnepriset 2025! Pianist Katrine Gislinge is one of Scandinavia’s most striking pianists, giving solo and chamber music concerts in most of Europe and in the US. Her interpretations are characterised by a trembling sensitivity, where every little detail in the music makes sense and gathers in a clear and forward-looking stream. Katrine Gislinge’s repertoire ranges from Bach to the newest music. In recent years, Katrine Gislinge has particularly distinguished herself as an interpreter of Mozart’s piano concertos. She has recorded several CDs for, among others, Deutsche Grammophon and, in 2014, an acclaimed CD for Danacord Records with music by Schumann and Per Nørgård, who dedicated one of the works to her.

✨ THE JURY OF POLSTJÄRNEPRISET 2025 ✨
We proudly present Judith Ingolfsson as the strings representative in the jury of Polstjärnepriset 2025! Violinist Judith Ingolfsson is recognized for her intense, commanding performances, uncompromising musical maturity, and charismatic performance style. Based in Berlin and Baltimore and enjoying a global career, she performs regularly as soloist, chamber musician and in recital. Judith Ingolfsson studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Jascha Brodsky, David Cerone and Donald Weilerstein. A Gold Medal winner at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in 1998, Judith was honored by National Public Radio as Debut Artist of the Year 1999. She is currently Professor of Violin at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, co-artistic director and founder of the Festival ”Aigues-Vives en Musiques” in France and the International Bach Academy Eisenach in Germany.

We proudly present Randi Krogvold Lundqvist as the woodwind representative in the jury of Polstjärnepriset 2025! Randi has a deep and versatile background as a musician and teacher, with a special focus on talent development. She is currently head of the wind department at Barratt Due Musikkinstitutt in Oslo and has for many years held the same position at Valdres sommersymfoni. Randi studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music, has worked in all the major Norwegian orchestras and performed at leading festivals in Norway and abroad.

We proudly present Camilla Lundberg as assistant head of the jury of Polstjärnepriset 2025! Camilla is a well-known culture personality in the press, radio and television. She has a solid background as a music critic at Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Kulturnyheterna, SVT. On Swedish radio she can be heard in the popular “Klassiska podden” and among the music experts in “CD-revyn”. Camilla Lundberg has long experience from jury work: in addition to several music competitions also the Guldbagge Awards, Prix Italia and Rose d’Or. As an amateur cellist, she enjoys playing string quartets.

We proudly present Anna-Karin Larsson as head of the jury of Polstjärnepriset 2025! Anna-Karin had been the general manager of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra since the beginning of 2024. Before that, she worked at the Swedish Radio (SR) for 35 years, both as a producer, host for classical music shows and in various managing positions. Mainly as Music Director, working with both popular and classical music and with extended responsibilities for culture and drama production. She was also responsible for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for more than 10 years.

⭐️ APPLICATION OPENED: Polstjärnepriset Nordic Edition 2025 ⭐️
After a successful first Nordic edition in 2023, the upcoming competition and course are again open for classical musicians (born 2006-2010) from all Nordic countries.

Both the competition and course take place over two periods: 31 October-3 November 2024 and 1-6 January 2025. Both periods will be filled with orchestral and ensemble playing, individual lessons, master classes and concerts. During the final on 5 January, all participants will be playing side by side with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. On 6 January, the Polstjärnepriset Symphony Orchestra will have a concert at Stockholm Concert Hall.

Stort grattis till Esa-Pekka Salonen till utmärkelsen the Polar Music Prize 2024! Vi är väldigt stolta över att ha fått dela scenen med honom i Berwaldhallen i augusti, när han dirigerade Polstjärneprisets Symfoniorkester på Östersjöfestivalen. Det blev en riktigt häftig fjärde symfoni av Brahms som alla i orkestern och publiken kommer att minnas länge. Vi vill tacka honom än en gång för den fantastiska upplevelsen och gratulera honom till det fina priset! ⭐️

Congratulations to Esa-Pekka Salonen on being awarded the Polar Music Prize 2024! We are very proud to have shared the stage with him in Berwaldhallen in August, when he conducted the Polstjärnepriset Symphony Orchestra at the Baltic Sea Festival. It turned into a truly wonderful fourth symphony by Brahms that everyone in the orchestra and the audience will remember for a long time. We would like to thank him once again for the fantastic experience and congratulate him on the great prize!

⭐️ Cellisten Hugo Svedberg är korad vinnare av Polstjärnepriset 2024 ⭐️

Efter en intensiv och spännande tävlingsvecka har vinnaren av Polstjärnepriset 2024 utsetts. Cellisten Hugo Svedberg imponerade på juryn med sitt vackra spel som solist tillsammans med Göteborgs Symfoniker.

Juryns motivering lyder: ”Hugo är en ung mästare med mäktig ton. Han har en självklar solistisk förståelse, musikalisk intelligens och innerlighet.”

Som vinnare får Hugo Svedberg 50 000 kronor. Andrapristagaren Elias Xie som spelar piano vinner 10 000 kronor. 5 000 kronor vardera går till tredjepristagaren, violinisten Maya Broman Crawford-Phillips, och till fjärdepristagaren Philip Engström som spelar cello.

De fyra finalisterna i Polstjärnepriset 2024 är utsedda av juryn efter en spännande semifinal i Vänersborg. De följande talangerna får ta steget till finalen i Göteborgs Konserthus kl 15 den 5 januari:

I finalen kommer de fyra unga musikerna att framföra sina tävlingsbidrag tillsammans med Göteborgs Symfoniker. Nu är det första tävlingsmomentet i Polstjärnepriset 2024 avgjort i Vänersborg! Juryn har utsett de åtta unga klassiska musiker som går vidare till delfinalen.

De 22 tävlande fick framföra sina tävlingsbidrag inför juryn idag. Åtta musiker har valts ut att gå vidare till delfinalen på onsdag 3 januari där de tävlar om de fyra finalplatserna:

"Jag växte upp i en musikerfamilj och har som följd spelat fiol i nästan hela mitt liv. Jag har haft möjlighet att uppträda både solistiskt och i ensembler i olika salar som Musikverein Wien och Harpa i Reykjavík. Jag blev nyligen tilldelad andra pris i den Österrikiska musiktävlingen Prima la Musica."

"Jag började ta lektioner vid 8 års ålder gammal för Galina Ehrngren. Redan då upptäckte jag en stor mängd pianolitteratur som jag ville lyssna på, tolka och spela. Än idag är detta glöden som uppmuntrar mig till övning. Mitt mål innefattar att bli konsertpianist och som kvitto på att jag övar mot detta mål har jag vunnit flera tävlingar. För närvarande studerar jag för Mats Widlund och David Huang."

Jag har haft mycket musik i min uppväxt, dels eftersom jag gått grundskolan på Musikskolan Lilla Akademien, dels eftersom mina föräldrar och syskon spelar musik. Jag gillar också att resa, prova nya saker och att läsa."

"Jag har, sedan jag i sexårsåldern började spela cello, haft glädjen att få vara med och framföra stora symfoniska verk, spela kammarmusik i olika konstellationer och framträda som solist. "Jag har vuxit upp med klassisk musik. Min mamma är fiol-lärare och min pappa är violinist, så det kändes naturligt för mig att börja spela fiol. På kurserna som YOMA anordnar har jag fått mycket inspiration från fantastiska lärare från hela världen. Dessutom har jag fått nya vänner som delar mitt musikintresse. Jag älskar att uppträda och att spela tillsammans med andra gör mig glad. I framtiden hoppas jag kunna arbeta som violinist i en orkester."

"Jag är 17 år och kommer från Växjö. Jag började spela violin från fyra års ålder. Det kom väldigt naturligt för mig då båda mina föräldrar är musiker, pappa violinist och mamma flöjtist och kantor. De senaste fem åren har jag varit med på YOMA kurserna och Polstjärneprisets kurs. Nu studerar jag på Nordiska Musikgymnasiet. Jag älskar att spela violin och det är det jag vill jobba med i framtiden."

"Jag började spela oboe när jag var 10 år gammal på musikskolan Lilla Akademien. Som barn älskade jag utmaningen med att spela oboe och den den dagliga övningsrutinen. Idag går min passion för musiken bortom en daglig rutin, och glädjen jag känner när jag spelar musik med och för andra är oersättlig."

"Musik har alltid funnits i mitt liv i olika former, som dans, sång, pop och klassiskt, men cellospel är absolut det jag utövat allra mest och längst med hjälp av en massa roliga upplevelser på vägen. Det som fått mig att fortsätta hålla på förutom det är nog glöden att locka lyssnare till att höra hur bra, häftig och cool klassisk musik kan vara."

För mig är tävlingen inte bara mot de andra deltagarna utan även mot mig själv. Min drivkraft kommer från min relation till den klassiska musiken och mitt pianospel."

"Min första kontakt med fagotten var på ett öppet hus när jag var tio år, jag blev direkt förälskad i den vackra, mörka klangen och började sedan ta lektioner. Att spela fagott är det absolut bästa jag vet, både som solist och tillsammans med andra. Att sitta i orkester och känna att man är en del av något större är en helt magisk känsla!"

För mig har det alltid varit självklart att satsa på ett yrke inom musik och uttrycka mig genom fiolen. Jag går på Yehudi Menuhin School i England där jag hoppas fördjupa mig i min musikaliska utveckling. Jag älskar att kammarmusicera och dela min kärlek till musiken med andra."

"Jag är 15 år och började spela cello vid sex års ålder. 2021 vann jag Two Moors Festival Competition och var guldprisvinnare i London Young Musician Competition och vann även Rotary Competition i Dorset. 2023 vann jag första pris i seniordelen av Bromsgrove Young Musicians Platform och jag tog också 2:a pris i Haslemere International String Competition samt pris för den mest lovande unga musikern."
