"I don't have THE solution. But I have ONE solution".
Reginald "Happy" Wilson, former imprisoned for life at San Quentin, shared his experiences of what worked for him, and several of his fellow inmates, regarding rehabilitation and starting a new life.
The discussion focused on crime, art, rehabilitation and second chances and about what we in Sweden can learn from the American experience of gang violence and long sentences.
The tour of screenings and panel discussions sparked by the documentary film Waiting for life by Staffan Julén, artistic researcher at IFFS, concluded last week, but you can watch two of the discussions at IFFS play on our website.

Can AI create art? #aicreativity #aiart #aiandart #research
Malcolm Fairbrother: Climate change is surprisingly cheap to solve, and extremely expensive not to. #climateeconomics #climatepolicy #research
One explanation of why solving climate change is so hard, is that it would cost so much for societies that politicians - and voters - simply will not tolerate it. But is this true? In this talk, Malcolm Fairbrother, professor of sociology and researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies, challenges the idea that money is the problem, and describes a path forward modeled on other environmental problems of the past that humanity was able to solve.
AI can produce nice images, music and even full length books. But can it create "art"? Or is there an "inherent non-creativity of statistical machine learning".
There are there fundamental differences between the processes of human creativity, and AI processes. Does these differences make it impossible for AI to actually do art? Palle Dahlstedt, professor of interaction design, dives into these questions in this talk he gave recently at the institute. Find it in full at the IFFS youtube channel.
"Machine learning algorithms are designed to give the most likely answer. A creative process is usually the opposite. The algorithms generate the most probable output, while artists are doing the exact opposite. A very common thing that is done with AI is to imitate something. If you train is on Bach's 15 two-part inventions - little keyboard pieces that every piano student has played - an AI will map the ideas in them. In the first there are these ideas, and in the second there are some new ones, and some that overlap with the first, and so on. Finally it has mapped the ideas in all 15. If you then ask it to make one more, it will generate something that is totally inside this circle of ideas because that is all it knows. It will give you more of the same. But if Bach had written one more, it would have added something outside the circle."

DO WE KNOW WHAT "GOALS" TO GIVE TO A REALLY SMART AI SO THAT IT DOES NOT DESTROY US? NO. BUT WHEN WE DO, WE CAN FORMULATE THAT INTO MACHINE LANGUAGE, RIGHT? NO, NOT YET. 😬
Basically, "AI alignment" is the area of AI development dedicated to making sure that a very intelligent AI don't decide to kill us all. Do we know how to do that? Short answer: No. Yet, the companies developing AI keep putting new ever more advanced AI on the market for public use. Olle Häggströms talk at our place a month back centered on these issues. Find it at iffs.se/play.

Fertility rates and emissions.
The richest 10 percent of the world's population is responsible for 50 percent of total CO2 lifestyle consumption emissions. And according to a 2021 report from Cambridge Sustainability Commissions, University of Sussex, the top 5 percent wealthiest people was responsible for 37 percent of the growth in emissions between 1990 and 2015. Yet it is the poorest 50 percent of the population that will suffer most of the negative consequences of the global warming caused by the emissions. One example is low lying Bangladesh who already suffers extended flooding due to climate change. Säde Hormio, researcher in philosophy at the Institute for Futures Studies recently gave a talk about the moral questions that arise from the unequal distribution between the rich and the poor of both responsibility of emissions, and regarding who will bare most of the burden of these emissions.
