Zambia's Women's Football Team: Road to Olympic Glory
The qualification of Zambia's women's football team for the Olympics for a second time is a monumental achievement, highlighting their grit and determination. This remarkable journey places them against football juggernauts: Germany, the USA, and Australia. A hearty congratulations to the team, the coaching staff, and the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for this incredible milestone. As they prepare for the global stage, a comprehensive and strategic approach is vital, spanning tactical finesse, skill development, physical endurance, mental toughness, and team harmony.

As the Chair of the Zambian Institute of Sports, a question was posed by a student from our inaugural TEVET accredited professional sports coaching course about practical advice for FAZ in the three-month lead-up to the Olympics. The goal: to fine-tune Zambia's performance against the world's elite. Here is the roadmap I suggested:

1. Tactical Preparation
Analyzing the Opposition: Conduct in-depth analysis of each adversary's gameplay to discern their tactics, key players, and vulnerabilities, incorporating recent match reviews and possibly enlisting a specialized analytics team.
Customized Tactics: Develop tailored strategies for each rival, focusing on a robust defense, agile counter-attacks, and exploiting any weaknesses. Training should replicate expected match scenarios.
2. Technical Enhancement
Skill Development: Players should enhance their technical prowess—passing, shooting, dribbling, ball control—through specific drills.
Set Pieces Mastery: Given their potential game-changing nature, set pieces (corners, free-kicks, penalties) demand special focus.
3. Physical Conditioning
Enhancing Stamina and Strength: Tailor a fitness program to boost players' endurance and strength, ensuring peak performance during the tournament.
Prioritizing Recovery: Emphasize recovery strategies, including nutrition, physiotherapy, and rest, for optimal physical condition.
4. Psychological Readiness
Fostering Mental Resilience: Partner with a sports psychologist to develop coping mechanisms for pressure, enhance focus, and increase confidence.
Promoting Team Spirit: Nurture a supportive and united team environment to motivate players to excel.
5. High-Level Competition Exposure
Organizing Friendly Matches: Schedule friendlies against teams with styles similar to Olympic foes for valuable experience and tactic testing.
Training Camps: Conduct high-intensity camps in environments akin to Olympic conditions for better acclimatization.
6. Utilizing Video Analysis and Conducting Meetings
Video Reviews: Regular analysis sessions to adjust tactics based on training and friendly performances.
Strategic Meetings: Hold frequent meetings to align on strategies and foster team cohesion.
7. Implementing Scouting
Deploy Scouts: Gather latest intelligence on Olympic competitors, especially for tactical shifts or player changes.
8. Community and National Support
Engaging Support: Draw on community and national backing to uplift team morale.

Zambia now boasts a vast network of sports-trained professionals, encompassing both our seasoned experts and enthusiastic students, all keen to extend comprehensive support in the aforementioned areas. Our assistance has been offered repeatedly in the past, and it is our sincere hope that this time, our proposal will be warmly received and considered.

"Football is an excellent microcosm of society, as it requires a combination of short and long-term preparation in order to succeed. To beat Japan at football, or any other sport for that matter, one must be willing to dedicate themselves to the highest levels of quality preparation – both in the immediate future and further down the line. This means focusing on not only individual skills but also team dynamics; understanding tactics while also developing physical strength; mastering technique while cultivating mental fortitude. It is through this holistic approach that teams can hope to outshine their opponents and reach new heights of success". (Osika Sensei- former Adjunct Lecturer -University of Tsukuba, Japan)

14/07/2023

We must join together to applaud Darious Kapembwa, a journalist from the Zambian Mast newspaper for his courageous call out of the Guardian news article "Zambia women’s football team head coach accused of sexual misconduct" as systemic media driven racism. In his article, he has questioned the timing of its publication which came right after Copper Queens beat Germany 3-2 in an international friendly in Furth to wrap up their one-month long pre-FIFA World Cup European camping before heading off to New Zealand ahead of the tournament. He has also highlighted how this type of reporting perpetuates racism and colonialism by reinforcing negative stereotypes about black Africa being backwards and uncivilized through misrepresentation or underrepresentation their by usually by middle class white male journalists. His bravery is commendable and we should all stand with him against such injustice!

As a Black Zambian living in the diaspora and an epistemic decolonial activist, I stand in solidarity with Darius Kapembwa for his courageous and insightful response to the Guardian news article, Coach Bruce Mwape for his humble service to Zambia's people. Ba Mwape, in Zambia and at FIFA to large extent, you are innocent until proven guilty - so stay focused and complete your mission. And to the Copper Queens and all teams who will suffer racism from Western media at this year's Women World Cup, stand strong and defend your humanity with excellent performance and dignity.

My positionality as an epistemic decolonial activist is key in my engagement. This involves challenging colonial structures that perpetuate oppression and racism, and engaging in public dialogue to highlight how colonialism has shaped our current systems of knowledge (and news) production. We work towards dismantling these systems for more inclusive knowledges.

ZIS Scholarships - Honoring Our 2012 Afcon Champions by investing in their careers!
The Zambian Institute of Sport is excited to announce a 100% scholarship offer to the 2012 Chipoloplo Afcon champions for them to do the TEVETA-accredited course Cert in Sports First Aid. This is an incredible opportunity for our nation’s heroes and shows appreciation for their country.

This scholarship will empower these players as they transition into sports coaching, teaching, and leadership careers after retirement from football. It also provides them with certification that employers such as private schools, colleges, and gyms recognize which can open up many doors of opportunities post-footballing career.

Not only does this offer provide great benefits for those who receive it but it also puts Zambia on the world map by recognizing its national heroes in a unique way! Professor Oscar Mwaanga, chairperson of The Zambian Institute Of Sport commented “We are delighted that we have been able to give back something so meaningful to those who have brought pride and honor not just nationally but internationally too”

It is amazing how much one small gesture like this can make such a huge difference! We hope more countries across Africa follow suit by showing appreciation toward their former athletes through initiatives like this one! To learn more about ZIS visit https://zis.org.zm/public/
