Stockholm-based Indie Pop trio, Velvet Moon have developed a reputation for crafting music that is both deeply personal and sonically immersive. Led by vocalist and lyricist Sandra Bjurman, whose introspective writing explores both everyday life and larger societal themes, the band’s sound is a dynamic fusion of heartfelt storytelling and lush production. Producers Stefan Örn and Johan Glössner provide the atmospheric backdrop to Sandra’s emotive vocals, creating a seamless blend of intimacy and grandeur.
Their latest single, "A Love Song," featured below, was co-written by the trio and produced by Örn and Glössner, and is the third release from their upcoming album "Endless War in The Summer," due in the spring of 2025. The track marries 80s-inspired dance rhythms with a bittersweet melancholy, featuring a rich tapestry of synthesized sound, and electrifying guitar lines. Sandra’s radiant vocals soar above the mix, evoking a nostalgic yet fresh energy, reminiscent of tracks like "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen, but with a modern twist and a female touch..
Influenced by The War On Drugs, Joni Mitchell and Ry Cooder, the band's current sound is reminiscent of the sultry Synth Pop of 80's Fleetwood Mac, Chappell Roan, the Eurythmics and Cannons. Now, with over 15 million streams across platforms, Velvet Moon has become a global sensation. Their earlier albums secured a spot on Spotify’s Viral Chart in Indonesia, and their music has been featured in commercials for brands like Kappahl and Bollinger in Sweden.
As they prepare for the full release of their new album, Velvet Moon continue to build on their signature blend of modern Indie Pop, cementing their place in the contemporary music landscape.
In a recent interview, I asked them what inspired the song, they collectively told me:
"It was written during a trip to Palma, shortly after the loss of a dear friend. We've written a poem to best describe the song. The best ones are taken early, and so were you, Peder, your wings touched everyone, your laughter will live within us - always."
And that brings me nicely to the single in question - "A Love Song."
This track is a poignant reflection on lost connection and unspoken words. With evocative lines like “Every laughter has a crying after,” the track captures the bittersweet aftermath of love, and echoes the ache of unresolved conversations and fading connections. The song carries a sense of longing, repeatedly asking “Where are you?” against a backdrop of guilt and regret. The blend of pensive lyrics and haunting melody makes this single a powerful exploration of heartache, emotional distance and closure.
To close, this single and forthcoming album won’t gather dust in any collection, keeping heads bouncing and feet tapping from sofa to stage. So why not clear a space, and give Velvet Moon a try for 2024.
