Dr. Rashid Diab (1957), who participated in the second edition of the Aurora Biennale for Nordic Countries in Malmö, Sweden, is a painter, printmaker, and art theoretician. Since the 70’s he has exhibited internationally and has been collected by several museums, national libraries, and other private entities. In 1991 he finished his thesis on the Traditional and Contemporary of Sudanese Art (painting). In 1999 he founded Dara Art Gallery and in 2005 the Rashid Diab Arts Centre, a non-profit organization. Recently exhibiting in Sudan, Kenya, Lebanon, and Spain.
The art of Rashid Diab can be understood as a hardened study of light, colour, and the geographical spacing of Sudan. An inquiry into the fauna that roams the Nile. With deep knowledge of colour, he homages the imperative role of Sudanese women in society. Their portrayal in migration, sometimes huddled as an abstract monad of ideas that conglomerate into a busy visage, an open window to his country’s cultural spectrum.
