Hey!

We’re welcoming you to Photo book session #6

The Photo book sessions are all special, but this one is something extra.

This time we’re proud to present internationally renowned photographer Gerry Johansson. His photographs and his books are the stuff of legends. The idea is an open and informal talk (and discussion) about photographic projects and making photo books.

Limited number of seats - DM if you want to come! First come, first served.

As always when it comes to the Photo book sessions:

The idea is an informal gathering where we share and explore photo books as the objects they are. Simple as that! Layout. Sequencing. Size. Feel. Smell. Favorites. And of course the images!

A central part is also for you to bring a photo book you love. Just to show it. Or if you feel it - share a few thought about why you like it so much!

Date: Wednesday 24 April 2024
Time: 18:00 - ca 20:00
Place: Fågelbacksgatan 7 (just next to Hästhagen) here in Malmö, Sweden.

We will provide some coffee/fika! ☕️🍪 😋

Vernissage 21 March 17:30-19:00 at Fotoaffären , Bergsgatan 9, Malmö, Sweden

My work is my intimate view of the moments I get to experience. I like to share what I felt. I like to see my relationship with the world with softness, sweetness and with certain joy for loneliness. This is how life feels for me. I once read ``the heart is an eye´´. It is a need for me to be sensitive to the world. It is about the elements where I can get to identify myself and I interact with them. It’s as if my photos were my own diary.

The exhibition will be up until 12 April 2024.

See you soon!

Hey! We asked Alison McCauley, who's exhibiting parts of her project Shimmers at the gallery right now, 3 questions about her work.
Question 3 (of 3):
How do you challenge yourself in your work?

Her answer:

Questioning myself and what I’m doing and why I’m doing it keeps me on my toes. I enjoy reinventing myself and I like trying out different ways of working. Often (probably most of time) my experiments don’t lead to anything in themselves but I think they do help me to grow and they can inform my work. Experimenting with techniques and gear can also keep things fresh for me. I like making my own filtres out of glass or plastic. Sometimes a change of camera can be good. Using a basic camera and working around its restrictions can be fun. Also I like to work in series, within the framework of loose concepts or ideas, and this keeps me motivated and keeps things challenging for me. When I really get blocked, a change of scenery, whether it’s another country or a different part of my home town, can really help motivate me.

Hey! We asked Alison McCauley, who's exhibiting parts of her project Shimmers at the gallery right now, 3 questions about her work.

Question 2 (of 3):

What inspires you?

Her answer:

In my early days as a photographer, I was mostly inspired by other photographers. I still love looking at the work of other photographers but my sources of inspiration have moved towards other art forms such as novels, films and paintings. For example, I’m inspired but the loose but strong mark making in a painting by Antoni Tàpies, by the shimmering, minimalist beauty of a Rothko and by the dark stories of Somerset Maugham or Joseph Conrad. However, mostly I’m inspired by the people I meet, the places I see and by my own thoughts, ideas and emotions.

Hey! We asked Alison McCauley, who's exhibiting parts of her project Shimmers at the gallery right now, 3 questions about her work.

Question 1 (of 3):

Describe your work in 3 sentences.

Her answer:

My work is simultaneously outward and inward looking. My photography is instinctive, open-ended and subjective. People often describe my work as « poetic and mysterious », but that sounds better coming from someone else!

About the exhibition:

Having had two very different geographical starting points, with Candelaria having grown up in Argentina, and Annegret in the east of Germany, this exhibition serves as their meeting point. While the two women had been experiencing belonging and non-belonging in various ways and places apart from one another, they recognize this search as a strong common denominator.

All the facettes that come along with a search for belonging play a vital role in their work: experiencing glimpses of (non-)belonging, trying to fit in, losing connections again, feeling emptiness, counting one’s losses, and starting over, all the while pondering about the things and connections lost along the way.

“Who lives in this house?”

and

“Who wore this glove?”

are questions that served as the starting points for this exhibition. The idea of a ghostly presence, one that is not fully graspable, haunts the artists: Something was lost, whether it might have been a connection or a physical item.

Through sharing these experiences with one another, the two artists are now also encountering the things that bind them together as humans: acknowledging that things transform constantly, and establishing meaning in human interaction by addressing these experiences through an underlying, new feeling: Most was lost.

And suddenly, the loneliness becomes more bearable.

FAMN used to be one thing. A publishing house. Now it's two things. A publishing house and a physical "space for photography" (some would say a Gallery). Sometimes these to work close together. Sometimes not.

FAMN Publishing is a small Malmö-based (Sweden) publishing house focusing on photography and visual art. Experimental. Curious. Small editions. In close collaboration with the artists.
A try to capture a few of the many interesting local voices out there.

FAMN - the space - is a "space for photography". Be it exhibitions, talks, workshops, book circles, a collab space. Overall a friendly and inviting space!

The idea is to showcase local (Malmö, Sweden) as well as Swedish and international photography. We want to at the same time lower the threshold to get a chance to exhibit as well as we want to stretch the horizon for what kind of photography that would get show here in Malmö. Always with a big heart. Always with quality (whatever that is!) That's the ambition at least!

Sounds good? We think so too!
