Original score from the 2004 horror feature film directed by Tobe Hooper, starring Angela Bettis, Brent Roam and Marco Rodríguez, released by Lionsgate (USA), Anchor Bay (UK), Columbia TriStar (Spain) and Kinowelt (Germany).

THE STORY: A historic Hollywood hotel houses a supernatural evil. It’s been subdued for decades, but when renovations start, a series of murders take place.

THE SCORE: “Working with horror director Tobe Hooper was one of my all-time favorite film scoring experiences. He was completely unafraid of coming completely out of left field with musical colors and thematic ideas. In one review session when I set him up at the MIDI keyboard with a sample library of odd acoustic sounds and percussive effects, it was like watching a kid in a candy store. Some of the score involving those sorts of things were actual performances by Mr. Hooper. He was also very focused on ’stings’, or ’seat jumpers’ as he called them. We spent a good amount of time on shifting these shocking accents a frame or two either way until he felt it was just right to send someone out of their seat. Harmonically and melodically I felt I had complete freedom to explore anything I wanted, as long as it supported the emotion on the screen and made the audience feel generally uneasy.” – Joseph Conlan
