In a society where traditional gender roles often dictate women's behavior, Waniya Riaz, a student at Peshawar University, is challenging cultural norms by being the only female cyclist regularly commuting to her university. Waniya’s determination and passion for cycling have garnered attention, but not always in the way one might expect.
From an early age, Waniya developed a love for cycling, mastering the skill through years of practice. When she was accepted into Peshawar University, she realized the distance between her hostel and the department was significant. Additionally, fulfilling daily needs, such as shopping for groceries, required a practical solution. For Waniya, cycling became both a necessity and a passion.
In the Pakhtun society, known for its strong cultural diversity and traditional values, Vania’s decision to ride a bicycle is seen as daring. "It’s not just about reaching my destination; it’s about breaking barriers and proving that women can be just as independent and capable in any setting," she explains. Her determination stems from her passion and confidence, which she credits to her love for cycling.
Cycling not only empowers Vania but also allows her to inspire other women, especially young girls who often struggle with motivation in conservative communities. "Girls today lack motivation, and I want to be that figure who encourages them to pursue their passions fearlessly," she asserts.
Riding her bicycle through the streets of Peshawar has become her personal symbol of empowerment and independence, enabling her to spread a message of confidence and strength. She remains undeterred by the societal pressure around her, instead focusing on the many benefits it brings.
"Cycling has given me confidence, made me feel empowered, and allowed me to act as a motivator for other young women, especially those who lack motivation and feel discouraged by societal norms," she explained.
Her experience underscores the challenges and excitement of navigating cultural diversity, where societal expectations often clash with personal passions. Wania continues to break barriers, becoming a beacon of inspiration for many young women in Pakistan, showing them that they too can step outside societal norms and pursue their dreams.
