One more from the Alaska 1988 archive - sporting an original production .equipment Kinder smock.
This is in a derelict Kennicott mine building we spent a few nights up there as a change to our camp in McCarthy.
Kennecott, also known as Kennicott and Kennecott Mines, is an abandoned mining camp in the Copper River Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska that was the center of activity for several copper mines. It is located beside the Kennicott Glacier, northeast of Valdez, inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The camp and mines are now a National Historic Landmark District administered by the National Park Service.

More from Alaska 1988.
We were in McCarthy a tiny hamlet at the snout of the 27 mile Kennicott Glacier in the Wrangell St Elias Range - the 90mile road in was a single track former railway line to the copper mine and followed by a hand pulled tramway over a raging river. Population about 20. While there my self and Nigel Gregory made an ascent of Bonanza Peak- involving a knife and edged ridge that was actually a cornice 😬😱. The descent was ludicrous down very steep scree slopes that had avalanched - while other avalanches were going off around us. It was intense - even now when we talk about it it puts the fear of god in to us. Goodness knows owe how we weren’t killed !

One from the archive and an August past - in Chena River, Alaska, in the early part if a 3 month Operation Raleigh expedition (14C). We spent the first couple of weeks working on the trails for the state parks. The Ultrafleece was brilliant as the mosquitoes couldn’t bite through it like they did with cotton t-shirts !!!

The house in the background is Brantwood a historic house located on the eastern shore of Coniston Water in the Lake District. It was the former home of John Ruskin, a famous Victorian writer, artist, and social reformer, and is now open to the public as a museum, showcasing Ruskin’s life and work.

were one of the great pioneers of outdoor clothing in the 1970s onwards - Paul and Sarah Howcroft brought fresh thinking not only regarding fabrics and design but also sales and marketing. Using databases and owners magazines as marketing tools as well as fresh clean designs in their outlets.
We discuss them in Mountain Style - so please support our Kickstarter - as we need pre orders to get the book to the printing stage.

Here's a link to Kickstarter for 'Mountain Style - British Outdoor Clothing 1953 to 2000' that I've been working on with Max Leonard for a few years. We’ve poured years of archive digging, interviews, research and studio shoots into this, to tell the story of how British outdoor clothing evolved from woolly jumpers and workwear to highly technical specialist gear – creating global brands and style classics along the way.
To make the book a reality we need pre orders via kickstarter - so do please place an order - delivery in time for Christmas !

The first illustrated history of British outdoor clothing – apparel that took us further, faster and higher, and became style classics.
