🌹 Recently during an online live session with Mona (the organizer of Unified Dance Festival) and Carola Tauler, we had a conversation about women in kizomba. Following this conversation, I’m sharing here some of my thoughts and experience.

So, what is it like to be a woman in the male-dominated scene? First of all, no matter the gender, you must be professional and responsible for the job you do. Being a pretty face and having charisma is of course an advantage at the beginning. However, to continue, it’s important to be an evolving artist and keep your internal fire. To stay true to yourself and be happy to share your art with the audience. My personal experience is that being a female DJ has both benefits and drawbacks…

I don’t take for granted that I receive quite a lot of caring attention from organizers during events - do I feel comfortable, do I need something, how do I feel in general. And this care has a visible difference in comparison to male artists. Aesthetical elements, which I like, that as a woman I can blend elegance and style behind the decks and this brings an additional festive mood to dancers. Yes, I’m sure that appearance matters in this case, even though not all people watch me 😁. Still, the vibes are real. Also, lady DJs bring another sense to the dance floor, and this gives a different aliveness to the party.

On the other hand, I got several rejections because I’m not a guy and I’m not a teacher. Being a female DJ also means being ready to be the opener, having worse slots, or mixing in a non-main room. Sometimes I can be very tired physically due to carrying all the equipment and enduring whole night parties . If I have any of my male colleagues around, then it’s easier because they help a lot 🥰. Still, the next day I have my sparkles back and am happy to mix over again!🎶

The presence of women DJs is rising. Sometimes it's a fashion statement or following trends, still it’s important to recognize that we (women) are as talented and skilled as guys☺. And personally, I'm happy to be an inspiration and support for those girls who want to start this journey but have resistance because of perceived limitations. If you are passionate about sharing the musical gems you've discovered, to exchange your art for the energy of the dancefloor and can't see your life without music, then you are more than welcome to be a DJ!💝 Always yours, DJ Tati😘
