Shining a Light on Alcohol Abuse in HoReCa 🔦

It’s rarely discussed, but alcohol abuse is one of the main coping strategies in the HoReCa industry. Unfortunately, some of those in the field not only accept this but actively support it by providing free alcohol or offering it to staff at a discount. Some even disguise it as an “extra benefit.”

However, those who support these coping strategies may be doing so because they themselves struggle to manage stress, fatigue, and emotions in healthier ways. This doesn’t make it acceptable. By promoting alcohol as a coping mechanism, they perpetuate a culture that can lead to addiction, health issues, and a toxic work environment.

🌱It’s time to break this cycle. Leaders should be fostering environments that promote healthy coping mechanisms, such as providing access to mental health resources, encouraging open conversations about stress, and offering wellness programs. True leadership means setting a positive example and supporting staff in finding healthier ways to manage the pressures of the hospitality industry.

🌱However, accepting that the worst can happen and believing in our ability to handle it shifts our perspective. This mindset fosters resilience and empowers us to face obstacles with confidence.

👉🏻Reflection Question: For what in this situation do I need to take responsibility❓

💡Example: If one of our colleagues is frequently late to work and we blame them for not being prepared in time, we lose our power, weaken our relationship with our teammate, remain underprepared, and become emotionally drained.

We could take accountability by setting boundaries. We could take our power back by asking for help from others. We could talk to our colleague and express how we feel about the situation with the intention of repairing and strengthening the relationship.

🌱By shifting from a victim mentality to a mindset of accountability, we open the door to personal growth, healthier relationships, and a more fulfilling life.

🌱In both personal and professional settings, it’s easy to fall into the trap of blaming others when things go wrong. However, this mindset keeps us stuck in a cycle of victimhood, limiting our potential and straining relationships. By taking responsibility for our actions and responses, we can reclaim our power, encourage personal growth, build trust, and strengthen our connections with others.

Navigating Leadership Changes: Understanding Employee Fears 🏢💼

When employees fear for their positions during changes in leadership or management, it often indicates concerns about job security, stability, and trust in the organization. This fear can be driven by several factors:

👉🏻Indicators of Fear

1. Uncertainty and Anxiety: Fear of the unknown can create significant anxiety. Worries about potential changes in roles, responsibilities, or even job cuts are common.
2. Loss of Trust: Past negative outcomes from leadership changes can diminish trust in management.
3. Resistance to Change: Concerns that new leadership will disrupt workflow or culture.
4. Lack of Communication: Insufficient communication from management can lead to speculation, rumors, and increased fear.

Recognizing these indicators is the first step to creating a supportive work environment. Open communication, transparency, and involvement can help ease these fears and foster a resilient team.

🌱Feeling frustrated or angry most of the time at work in Horeca?
Here’s what you can do:

Ask yourself:
What about what I do in my job is a NO GO for me? Explore your answers, identify pain points, and consider workability in some cases. Here are some examples:

👉🏻Hurtful Language or Behavior: If you encounter repeated hurtful language or behavior, this is a NO GO.
Example: If regular customers use hurtful language, consider setting boundaries. Need help with this? DM me for a step-by-step guide.

👉🏻Stressful Days: If stressful days are a NO GO, look for workability.
Example: If you feel powerless during full service. Consider asking for help or pay more attention to how you prepare.

👉🏻Lack of Joy in the Job: If the job itself is a NO GO, explore alternatives.
Example: If you’re doing it mostly for the money and don’t find joy, consider doing something you enjoy and get paid for that.

✨Asking yourself “What in my work environment is a NO GO for me” can lead to actions that create a safer environment and more fulfilling workplaces.

🌱Setting Boundaries at Work

In any work environment, setting boundaries isn’t about distancing yourself from others. Rather, it’s about creating the safety you need to thrive and function well. Healthy boundaries ensure that you can maintain your well-being, manage your workload effectively, and foster positive relationships with colleagues. By clearly defining what is and isn’t acceptable, you empower yourself to work more efficiently and harmoniously.

Boundaries are essential for creating a supportive and respectful workplace where everyone can contribute their best. It’s not just about saying “no” to others, but about saying “yes” to your own needs and values.

🛑One of the most damaging things for HoReCa employees is being told, directly or indirectly, that they’re “not good enough.” Here’s how this impacts them:

1. Productivity Drops: Negative feedback can hurt their productivity and stifle their ability to improve.

2. Overall Performance: Such comments can trigger broader performance issues, creating a negative cycle.

3. Feeling Undervalued: Hearing that they’re not good enough can leave employees feeling unappreciated, despite their efforts.

Instead of focusing on their shortcomings, highlight their strengths and efforts. Let them know their work is valued and provide constructive feedback for improvement.

This isn’t about sugar-coating or lowering standards. It’s about guiding them with, “I need this behavior/ action to change” instead of “You’re not good enough.”

🌱When employees feel valued for their efforts, they are more motivated to grow, change, and excel.

👉🏻Example: If an employee didn’t perform well at a table, acknowledge their effort and guide them on how to improve, rather than focusing solely on the mistakes.

🫵🏻 Standing Up for Yourself in a Hostile Work Environment

Navigating a work environment where employers or colleagues react aggressively to mistakes can be challenging and stressful. Setting boundaries is essential to maintain your well-being and ensure respectful communication. If someone shouts at you when you make a mistake, consider saying:

“I see you’re upset, and I take accountability for my mistake. However, I need to step away until I feel safe to continue this conversation.”

🌱Standing up for yourself respectfully can foster a healthier work environment and show that you value both your own dignity and professional conduct.

🗳️ Vote “YES” if you agree that boundaries are essential in the work environment. I’ll send you my step-by-step e-book that will guide you to set them effectively.
