Mbah Commissions Multiple Roads, Renames Abakpa Road after Mike Ejeagha

…_Says govt to take full responsibility for music legend’s upkeep_

…._Ejeagha: Mbah honoured me, prepared ground for Gwo gwo gwo ngwo trend_

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Monday, commissioned four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in Abakpa Nike, in Enugu metropolis, among them the Mike Ejeagha Crescent where the music legend lives and the adjoining, popular Obinagu Road, which he renamed him.

Other roads commissioned were Texaco Bus Stop-Ifo Road, and Nkpor Street.

Mbah, who also used the occasion to visit Ejeagha at his residence, announced that the government would henceforth take full responsibility for his upkeep, describing him as a living legend.

“Recall that when you gave us your mandate, we told you that you had kept your own part of the deal and that the burden had downshifted to us to fulfill our own part of the social contract.

“Recall further that we made a firm pledge that all the roads in the urban areas in Enugu must be paved.

“Recall also that last year,n we awarded 71 urban roads and 10 rural roads. Those 71 urban roads had since been completed, but some of the roads we are commissioning today are not part of those 71 roads.

“In the course of constructing or reconstructing those 71 roads, we identified, in January, some roads, which were not initially captured, hence needed to be treated as an emergency.

“So, we are commissioning four roads here today and all those roads are quite significant.

“But one of those roads stands out. It is the road that leads to the home of one of our great legends and icons.

“We have always told people that Enugu State is the home of legends. It is not just sporting legends. We also have the music icons. And we have one man, Mike Ejeagha, who, through his folk songs, have largely brought memories of years gone by to our doorsteps. He is a man who reminds us of our golden heritage as a people.

“When we talked about Enugu as being the centre of art and culture, this is a man, who brought Enugu to that epicentre. So, we are here to celebrate him while he is still living with us.

“So, in honour of him, this Obinagu Road, the entire stretch of the road leading to his home, is named after him and will now be known as Mike Ejeagha Road,” he stated.

Mbah, however, stressed the commissioned roads here was only the beginning of a new era for road infrastructure across Enugu State.

“We want to assure residents of Abakpa and Enugu State that we are not done yet. If you have followed our events, you would have noticed that recently, we also awarded contracts for the construction of 141 roads and 20 rural roads. And I can also tell you that Abakpa is not left out.

“Very soon, we will commence the dualisation of Penocks junction on the Enugu-Onitsha all the way to Opi-Nsukka. That contract has been awarded and work will soon commence.

“I want to assure you that the commitment we made to serve you with every fibre of our being can never be lost on us. We are going to work for you with everything we have,” the governor concluded.

Earlier in their remarks, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Project Development and Implementation, assured the governor and residents that the roads were constructed with durability and convenience of road users in mind.

“The typical road cross section of Obinagu Road and Mike Ejeagha Crescent comprise 300 to 600mm-thick sub-grade, 150mm-thick sub-base, 150mm-thick stone base course, 50mm-thick asphalt wearing course, and 600 by 600 to 900 by 900 reinforced concrete drainages and culvert,” he stated.

Meanwhile, receiving the governor at his residence, Ejeagha, who spoke through his son, Emma Ejeagha, and daughter, Elizabeth Ugwu (Nee Ejeagha), said that Mbah had honoured him beyond his lifetime.

“Previous governments made promises, however nothing happened. But Mbah never made any promise to us. We only woke up and heavy equipment were all over the place. And like a dream, we have brand new roads. Not long after, Gwo gwo gwo ngwo started trending,” Emma Ejeagha stated.

Also, elated residents, who turned out in their numbers, commended the governor for the roads, noting that the Infrastructure would impact their businesses and lives positively.

Mbah equally did some _Gwo gwo gwo ngwo_ dance steps to the delight of residents.

Controversy Rocks People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the ongoing Anambra State Local Government Election as PDP Chairmanship Candidate Defects to APGA

In a shocking turn of events, Hon Emengini Emmanuel Emenike (Agujiegbe), the PDP chairmanship candidate for Ayamelum, was spotted at the APGA Secretariat in Awka earlier today, accompanied by four individuals from the Labour Party and APC. The group reportedly requested that the APGA state chairman replace the current councillorship candidate for Umueje with their preferred candidate.

This move has raised eyebrows, with many questioning why Hon Emenike, a PDP candidate, would seek to replace an APGA candidate instead of promoting his own party's interests. Some have speculated that this may indicate a loss of confidence in the PDP or a strategic move to gain an advantage in the election.

Furthermore, it is unclear why Hon Emenike approached Chief Barr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye instead of Edozie Njoku, despite claims of campaigning for the latter.

This development has led many to believe that APGA is now the dominant force in the 2024 Anambra State Local Government Election, with no clear rival in sight. The party's strength in Ayamelum and Anambra appears to be growing, leaving other parties struggling to keep up.

NECO Insults Teachers, includes demeaning passage in exam question

The Impact of Demeaning Educators in NECO Exams

By: Emmanuel Sixtus - Excel Media News

While setting examination question for students participating in 2024 NECO exam, the National Examination Council put out a below passage for students. The disrespectful passage ridiculed teachers.

“Teaching is a noble profession
But teachers are never noble
Whoever God wants to punish
Pushes him to be a school master
There he dreams for wealth that is far away.

It needs patience to be a teacher
Their past students seem to be their reward
Teachers are all mathematicians
They are regarded so because they calculate
And recalculate their budgets.” The exam passage reads

NECO the body responsible for examining students for university qualifications has shown a despicable disdain to teachers, by including in a exam paper a passage that ridiculed teachers in the country.

Nigeria has failed to take care of teachers, with civil servants facing bleak future due to poor salaries.

Due to the poor minimum wage that has become part of civil servants history in the country, teachers barely have enough to take care of themselves, let alone meeting their secondary needs.

The poor condition of teachers in the country has become part of life, with everyone admitting that teachers are poor and can’t fulfil dreams in life.

The passage in question depicted the above narrative in a national examination paper. The passage was used to set up questions for students.

The recent NECO exam passage ridiculing teachers highlights a disturbing trend of disrespect towards educators.

This article demands an apology and underscores the critical role of teachers in society.

Apology is essential to restore the dignity of teaching in the country. While it’s hard for teachers to rise and fight, my pen will do the justice for now.

Education stands as the cornerstone of societal progress, and at the heart of this noble endeavor are teachers. The role of teachers continues to be neglected because nobody sees their sacrifice.

A successful or celebrated man began his journey in the hands of teachers. It is true that when a finished house stands, the foundation is hidden, but this should not deprive the fact.

Teachers are the foundation of everything good the world has become today. The ridiculing of teachers with a national exam passage is a monumental neglect and disrespect.

The recent NECO examination, which featured a passage ridiculing teachers, marks a distressing low.

It not only diminishes the stature of teachers but also sets a harmful precedent for students. For the purpose of emphasis this opinion explores the detrimental implications of such content and calls for an immediate apology from NECO.

Teachers play an indispensable role in shaping the future. They inspire, guide, and nurture students, instilling values that extend beyond academic knowledge.

By portraying teachers in a derogatory manner, NECO undermines the immense dedication and sacrifices these professionals make daily.

The Passage: A Disrespectful Depiction

The passage in question ridiculed teachers by portraying them as frustrated individuals who are punished by God, constantly dreaming of unattainable wealth, and struggling with financial calculations.

Such depictions are not only inaccurate but also disrespectful. They ignore the passion and commitment that drive teachers to educate and empower future generations despite numerous challenges.

Negative Impact on Students

Including such a passage in an examination can have far-reaching negative effects on students. It teaches them to view teachers with disdain rather than respect.

This can erode the student-teacher relationship, which is fundamental to effective learning. Students are likely to internalize these negative stereotypes, leading to a lack of appreciation for the hard work and dedication of their educators.

This portrayal lowers the perceived value of the teaching profession. At a time when there is already a significant shortage of qualified teachers, such narratives can deter potential educators from pursuing this career.

It also sends a message that society does not value or respect teachers, which can be incredibly demoralizing for those in the profession.

NECO, as an educational institution, holds a responsibility to uphold the dignity of all professions, especially teaching.

An immediate apology is necessary to address this misstep. Such an apology should acknowledge the critical role of teachers and the error in allowing such content to be part of an examination.

Furthermore, NECO should ensure that future examinations reflect respect for all professions and contribute positively to students’ perceptions of their educators.

In conclusion, the NECO examination’s inclusion of a passage ridiculing teachers is a grave error that demands immediate rectification.

Teachers are the backbone of education and deserve respect and recognition for their contributions. NECO must apologize and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the saying goes, “Wetin man do man,” it’s crucial to treat others with the respect and dignity they deserve, particularly those who dedicate their lives to educating and shaping the future of our society.

Hon. Maureen Gwacham's One Year Journey

By: Chukwuma Okafor, PhD(c)
(Ebubenna, onye Ayamelum)
June 21, 2024

A plethora of individuals have approached me, both in group WhatsApp and privately, demanding a comprehensive account of my Principal's accomplishments over the past year.

As a stalwart champion of the commonweal and a vociferous advocate for Veritas ad Potentiam (speaking *Truth to Power*), I commend your dedication to holding elected officials accountable for their actions. This laudable endeavour is a hallmark of a thriving democracy, and I encourage you to persist in your constructive criticism, which serves as a vital catalyst for growth and improvement.

In accordance with the tenets of transparency and accountability that undergird our democratic polity, I am delighted to submit this personal report in response to your legitimate inquiry into the stewardship of our representative, *Hon. Maureen Gwacham,* over the past twelve months.

In her mid-term briefing, Hon. Gwacham demonstrated her commitment to transparency and accountability by submitting herself for assessment and providing a comprehensive account of her accomplishments. Notably, she highlighted the formidable challenges posed by her predecessor's maladministration and misappropriation of funds approved for Oyi/Ayamelum in 2023, which necessitated her personal financial intervention to execute various projects since she is not good at blame-game.

Despite these formidable obstacles, Hon. Gwacham has achieved the following notable milestones in her first year in office:

1. Attraction of over N100 million worth of hospital equipment, slated for distribution to constituency hospitals in the coming weeks, thereby enhancing the healthcare infrastructure and promoting the well-being of our constituents.

2. Procurement of N50 million worth of empowerment materials, including grinding machines, shuttle buses, tricycles, motorcycles, solar panels, and food items, which will be distributed in the coming weeks, thereby fostering economic empowerment and self-sufficiency among our constituents.

3. Facilitation of employment opportunities for approximately 40 individuals in federal and state government agencies and parastatals, with appointment letters issued and subject to verification, thereby addressing the issue of unemployment and promoting economic growth.

4. Construction of a borehole in Umuobi Awkuzu, addressing the community's long-standing need for clean water, thereby promoting public health and hygiene.

5. Provision of seed capital of N100,000 each to 50 women from various communities, fostering economic empowerment and gender equality.

6. Renovation of a dilapidated six-block classroom at Nkwelle Ezunaka, with an ongoing borehole project for the same school, thereby enhancing the educational infrastructure and promoting access to quality education.

7. Institution of monthly stipends for over 100 selected indigent elderly individuals in the constituency, financed personally by Hon. Gwacham, thereby addressing the issue of poverty and promoting social welfare.

8. Attraction of over N1 billion worth of capital projects and interventions for Oyi/Ayamelum in the 2024 fiscal year, thereby promoting economic development and growth.

9. Successful motion urging the Federal Government, through NEMA, to provide relief materials to flood and fire disaster victims and reconstruct affected houses and public utilities, thereby promoting disaster risk reduction and management.

10. Co-sponsorship of a motion urging the Federal Government to construct the Aguleri-Otuocha-Ayamelum-Adani-Kogi road, a vital project connecting three states and enhancing food security, thereby promoting regional integration and economic development.
The above are some of her accomplishments. And it's open for verification.

Following from thee above, we can see that Hon. Gwacham, a politician endowed with an acute understanding of the grassroots, has exhibited this dedication to bridging the communication hiatus between elected officials and their constituents. She has exemplified transparency and accountability by providing a fastidious and comprehensive account of her accomplishments during her one year in office as we can see above. This commendable approach serves as a paradigmatic exemplar for other politicians to emulate, as it cultivates openness, answerability, and trust between elected officials and their constituents, thereby fostering a culture of accountability and good governance.

As we eagerly anticipate the government's release of funds for constituency projects, I entreat you all to remain optimistic and buoyant, as we anticipate achieving monumental successes in the forthcoming months, which will undoubtedly serve as a testament to the transformative power of effective communication and transparency in governance, and further bolster the faith of the electorate in their elected representatives. If she can do these now, imagine the greater impact she will make with increased resources.

Thank you for your continued vigilance, constructive criticism and engagement in our democratic process.
