It’s the 4th of September 2024, and on this day in history

Los Angeles was founded by the Spanish settlers who laid claim to it in 1781

In 2006 we lost a real celebrity treasure. Steve Irwin the famous Australian wildlife conservationist and TV personality was killed by a venomous bull stingray.

Kelly Clarkson became the first winner of American Idol in 2002

1976 saw the first ever episode of the Muppet Show aired

And in 1997 Mother Tereasa died at the age of 87

And remember You heard it here last.

Depression is a terrible thing to be suffering from. I want you to do yourself a favour. Whatever it is that making you feel down this morning, I want you to give yourself a day off from it.

Let’s be clear I feel your pain. I know it’s hard. But today I want you to do something different. Go for a walk, jump on the metro, catch a bus. Go somewhere you don’t go. Make it your mission today.

Remember whatever it is, in time it will pass. And you actually know that as much as I do. Please be kind to yourself today. Depression

The History of Qatar from 1507 to 1913

I paid a visit to the National Museum of Qatar and used my phone to photograph all of the information panels from 1507 to 1913.

What follows is all 40 of those information panels, so that when you visit the museum you will be primed and ready, to enjoy the experience even more.

NOTE
This is my first version. I just wanted to get it out there to see what kind of reaction I would get from viewers. I absolutely hate the images I took on my phone of the information cards in NMoQ. I used those images because I don’t have any illustrations or maps to use at present.

Perhaps in the near future I can produce a version 2 and replace those terrible photos with something to help tell the story better.

When I get asked what my favourite thing about living in Qatar is, I always say, "safety." I love the fact that I don't have to watch my stuff. I've been in Qatar now for 16 years, and in that time, I've never been the victim of any criminal activity whatsoever. And what's more, neither has anyone I know.

Qatar currently ranked third safest country in the world, and I've got to tell you that peace of mind, that safety, is worth so much money. So my number one thing, the thing I love most about Qatar, is safety.

Scooters! I’m absolutely loving them at the moment. I think I’ve turned into a scootie. Yeah I just made that word up.

It costs me just over 2 riyals to go from my Metro station at Legtafiya, to my home in Zig Zag towers.

I just walk out of the station, walk up to a scooter, scan the QR code and off I go. It’s quicker than any alternative transport, and cheaper as well.

Here’s my ride history. Look just 2.2 Qatar riyals per trip, to, or, from the Metro station.

However, I must point out that I ride the cheapest model of Loop scooter. They do have more expensive models, but I only use the cheapest ones.

Bye bye Kindle, hello Kobo

I ordered my Kobo Libra Colour today. So I’m sat in Hamad International Airport reading my trusty Kindle, knowing that in just a few days time, this old workhorse will be retiring.

Get free use of a digital camera, and use of a fully equipped photo studio complete with lighting, absolutely free for two hours at Qatar National Library.

I’m going to say that again. FREE! For anyone who is a member of the library.

And membership is free as well.

All you have to do is use your QNL App to pre-book your free 2-hour session. Yes, you must pre-book.

And you get the room, the camera and the lights all to yourself for a two hour sessioon.

It’s called the Green Screen room, because, well, it’s got a green screen.

However, I did discover that there is a lot of echo in the room.

The only negative I can think of is that the room, acoustically, isn't that great. It's got quite a bit of an echo going on here. So it's more of a photography studio than a videography. But it's free.

Amazing!

Free Books to read or listen to on your phone, tablet or computer.

All you need is a library card for the library nearest to you. Which in my case is Qatar National Library.

And the awesome completely free of charge Libby App available on iOS and Droid.

If you’re here in Qatar with me go to the QNL website, scroll down to the bottom and click on the Become a Member link. You will need to have your Qatar ID on the ready, and simply select 18 and over, or Under 18. And sign up for free, quickly and easily.

Then download the Libby App on your chosen device which is also completely free of charge. And enter your library card number, and pin.

Off you go…

I love audio books.

Watch this, I click the filter button and then select ‘Explore all genres, topics and categories. Then I select ‘Nonfiction’, and then audiobooks, and boom… over one thousand nonfiction audiobooks to choose from.

And it’s not only books. Watch this, go back to home, click filter, and this time select magazines. And boom… 2,250 magazines from around the world to read right there on your phone or tablet.

Amazing. I’ve cancelled my Netflix subscription and now I’m enriching my life with this absolutely awesome free online resource.

If you don’t follow this tutorial and do this for yourself, you’re a complete idiot.

Today I went for a great value business lunch at Al Aker Cuisine in Lagoona Mall.

It’s just 25 Riyals for a proper meal including main, sweet and a bottle of water.

You can choose from a Rice Combo, Vegetarian Combo or a Wrap Combo.

This is the same amount of money you would blow on a fast food burger meal, but instead you are getting a high quality meal from a company which is 100% Qatar owned and of course bears that famous name… Al Aker.

If you are in Lagoona Mall or indeed anywhere close to it. Pop into Al Aker Cuisine for a Business Lunch for just 25 riyals.

How do I score my meal… 10 out of 10 of course.
