KRATTI are a power-trio hailing from the infinitely fertile Finnish black metal underground. They made their public demo with the accurately titled Demo 2023. Despite their apparent newness, KRATTI are undeniably old souls as far as black metal goes, and they fully assert their ancientness with the full-length debut, Matka Kohti Kosmista.

While so much Finnish black metal for the past couple decades has been influenced by the hands of Shatraug or a certain Warmaster, KRATTI cast their gaze upon some of the scene's culter or less-fully-realized likes, such as antagonistic paragons Impious Havoc or the short-lived Syöpä. Which is to say, Matka Kohti Kosmista is NOT for trendy ears, and unapologetically whips forth a nastiness that's shot through with melancholy - hypnotically hummable riffs spiraled to the point of delirium, but built upon a stern 'n' stoic foundation of linear, deceptively epic songwriting. Even with the hysteric surge at which KRATTI move most of the time, atmosphere is built from within, their flat-yet-full production choice working as another instrument and rendering their miasmic musings that much more pained and poignant. Plus, occasional daubs of moonlit synth further separate band and record from normcore "black metal" non-ideals.

For those nostalgic for a more Sombre age, KRATTI have created a transportive spell with Matka Kohti Kosmista.

GEISTAZ' IKA are a shadowy entity hailing from Denmark's revitalized (and rising) black metal underground. The band revealed their first public recording, Trolddomsejd i skovens dybe kedel, at the very end of 2018, but only digitally. So impressed by its windswept wonder, SIGNAL REX eagerly stepped forward to release this debut album unto the worldwide stage.

Indeed, Trolddomsejd i skovens dybe kedel is a work of windswept wonder, and infinitely more. It's a work of black metal's most ancient and enduring elements, but rearranged in such a startling(ly confident) manner that they altogether feel surprisingly fresh. Resolutely raw but rippingly clear in ex*****on, GEISTAZ' IKA create classic Nordic black metal with a distinctly melodic air - and one most especially melancholic or at least solemn, even during the album's most blastingly intense moments - with guitars and also bass weaving misty, mystical tales that feel a lot like its cover art looks. References can be detected of both the Norwegian Perished and Hades but also early Isvind, Helheim, and Ulver, such is GEISTAZ' IKA's incorporation of delicate acoustics.

The past is always alive, and its latest present is GEISTAZ' IKA's Trolddomsejd i skovens dybe kedel. Behold that wonder.

IZROD - Sarajevski Odisej - LP/CD

Although "new" in name, IZROD are hardly newcomers. Hailing from the ever-fertile Bosnian scene, the four men behind this shadowy collective have largely helped put the small country on the international black metal map - first with Cave Ritual over a decade ago and then with Void Prayer thereafter, with both bands belonging to the incredibly prolific Black Plague Circle cabal. The latter band ceased activities last year, but a rebirth was no doubt brewing...

At last, it is here with IZROD and the band's first full-length, Sarajevski Odisej. Those who've been following these four men should surely recognize the sonic shift that's been bubbling since 2019; although not drastic by any stretch of the imagination, IZROD nevertheless marks a dramatic new epoch for them. Sharpened to a gleaming clarity that somehow reveals ever more dirt roiling beneath the surface, Sarajevski Odisej builds blazing-skyward songwriting that seemingly shifts in impossible ways. Serpentine melodies twist in and out of actually-tuneful dissonance and the coiling violence surges with triumphant fire, all while almost-jazzy interludes dot the landscape with class - and menace. Likewise for the leads: ripping and ecstatic, they are soulful and soul-sundering. When witnessed from a wider whole, IZROD take plausibly-pro BLACK METAL in a direction that both honors the artform's most ancient ways and the brazenness to not be shackled by more-underground-than-thou thinking. Sonic parallels can be drawn to the original orthodox movement of the mid-2000s or more recently the Icelandic scene spearheaded by Misþyrming. But truly, IZROD are their own masters, and Sarajevski Odisej is but the first audial evidence of that mastery.

Music and lyrics for "Sarajevski Odisej" were written and recorded during cold winters and humid summers throughout 2020-2023, in Sarajevo, by Izrod.

"Three years after the highly celebrated "S.S.I.E.", which saw the band catapulted into newer heights of morbid ecstasy and praise by acolytes of the real and unhinged essence of Black Metal, Nächtlich delivered their third full-length opus, and the first as a 5-piece band, which is composed by their live lineup in recent public rituals.

Soaring through the nocturnal skies and exulting under the unstoppable triumph of a sound that shall not be subversed nor uttered by trend-hopping maggots, the ever aptly titled "Exaltation of Evil" further develops on the sound that has been carved unto flesh by its predecessor.

Blending in the darkened woodland Black Metal sound from 90's German BM, with the rotting, foul and bilious aura of projects such as Mysteries, Vlad Tepes, Belkètre with a huge Punk edge to it, not just sonically but in spirit and attitude, utterly expelling instragram yuppies and self-appointed pseudo-underground wankers unto the peat-flooded catacombs to rot in eternity.

The songwriting here however is much more explored and varied that in "S.S.I.E.", an aspect for which the 5-piece lineup probably contributed too, with great use of Ambient interludes and outros to set the atmopshere under the murderous gaze of the howling wolves, and with a stronger addition of elements of 80's horned Heavy Metal, particularly in tracks like "Pagan Victory" and "Starsight of the Outer Regions", which further the value of the impetuous riff palette portrayed by the band, and even Krautrock enhancing their austere and infernal ritualism in true exaltation of evil.
