Newspaper executives often hold up Spotify as a shining example of success in a subscription-based model. However, this admiration rests on a flawed comparison. Newspapers and Spotify aren't comparable; rather, Spotify's business model is more akin to that of an aggregator.

Missing Pieces: Famous Landmarks Art Collection

The theme of our participation in Wan Ifra's 2022 Congress in Zaragoza was “The Significant Gap Affecting the Online Publishing Business.”
To convey this concept, we curated a series of images depicting famous landmarks that are universally recognized, but with parts of these landmarks missing. The visual representation of these “gaps” resonated with us, and we were so pleased with the outcome that we decided to share the collection in a gallery.

PT | A comunicação social presta um mau serviço à democracia quando mantém a informação séria, de qualidade fora do alcance do comum cidadão.

O Washington Post escreve ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’.
Deste lado da paywall de assinaturas está escuro. Aliás, está cada vez mais escuro.

Para ler conteúdos de três jornais diferentes (porque a pluralidade também é democracia) um cidadão tem que gastar cerca de 180€ por ano. Muita gente não o pode fazer.

O nosso desafio é, além dos 70.000 portugueses que assinam jornais em Portugal, trazer um milhão e meio para pagarem em média dez euros por ano em artigos de dez cêntimos ou edições a um euro.
Triplicava a facturação sem pedir subsídios.

Com os subsídios pagamos todos mas só os mesmos setenta mil é que lêem. Continua escuro mas todos pagam a conta da electricidade.

E não, não desapareciam os assinantes. Há estudos que demonstram que os assinantes iriam usar o pagamento ocasional para ler conteúdos de publicações que não assina, mantendo as ligações às publicações que assina.

Escrevo esta palavras com a tristeza de saber que nada mudará tão cedo. Todos os jornais sonham ser o New York Times com milhões de assinantes e lucros de milhões. Mas só há um NYT. Por isso praticamente mais nenhum jornal relevante dá lucro. Nem em Portugal nem lá fora.
