Today's discovery becomes a very special one for me since it is a Portuguese Guitar and Cello duo, and that amazing Cittern we call Portuguese Guitar is the instrument I chose to dweel with!
Pedro Moura and Bruna Moura released their first álbum in 2024, but since at least 2013 they were developing this show. Kudos for eternalizing this unique piece of musical expression!
Musically it is a heartfelt journey, detached from the traditional usage of the portuguese guitar, but with craftmenship that carries its legacy (and probably thousands of hours playing the traditional way).
The Cello and the Portuguese Guitar merge and entwine, building ambiences and soundscapes like an harmonic mist where the melodies appear.
Music has the chance to manifest through the silences in between the notes they express.
Some pieces are more accusticaly structured, other more electronic and cinematic.
The usage of the bowed harmonics on the cello and the finger slide on the portuguese guitar enrich the ambiences and at some point we find ourself on other continents!
The mood is somber, sober and splattered with breathless episodes.
The album is full of suprises in technique and composition, with a predilection for the ambience but with space for virtuosity in some observations.
It leaves me craving for more, but fortunally pressing play again takes me back to a different journey on each listening!
