28th AVANCA FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS
“Gondola” is the winner of the “28th International Meetings of Cinema, Television, Video and Multimedia - AVANCA 2024”, closing the 10 days of a film festival whose theme was FREEDOM, FREEDOM.
Directed in Georgia by the german filmmaker Veit Helmer, this film won the Cinema Award for Best Feature Film, the Award for Best Screenplay and an Honorable Mention for the music by Malcolm Arison and Sóley Stefánsdóttir. A wordless film by a filmmaker with a unique trajectory between European and Asian cinema, avant-garde with a certain “magical realism”.
The feature films “The King of the Elves” by Goran Radovanovic (Serbia) and “Tomorrow, if everything goes well” by Ivan Goldschmidt (Belgium) were distinguished with Special Mentions. The Belgian film was also awarded the Best Actress Award (Bérangère McNeese) and the Serbian film was awarded the Best Sound Direction Award (Milos Drndarevic).
The Jury also awarded Honorable Mentions to actress Nell Marie Haack from the German film “Porcelana” by Annika Birgel and to the Artistic Concept of “Nature Attacks” by French director Erik Semashkin.
The Short Film Award went to the Portuguese film “O Afinador de Silêncios” by Mário Patrocínio and the Best Animation Award went to “Antipolis” by Gaspar Jancis (Estonia).
The film jury was formed by researcher Anabela Oliveira, filmmakers Manuel de Coco (Greece), Maurice Huvelin (France), actor Max Pemberton (United Kingdom) and producer Silvia Panaková (Slovakia).
The D. Quixote Award from the FICC – International Federation of Film Clubs, awarded Ivan Goldschmidt's “Tomorrow, if everything goes well” the awards for best film, screenplay and direction.
Young actors Jaksa Prpic and Andjelija Filipovic from “The King of Elves”, by Goran Radovanovic, were distinguished as best actor and actress by the jury made up of film society members Abinash Shankar Muthyala (India), Víctor Feliu (Spain) and Bruno Teixeira.
Sérgio Godinho and “Era uma vez no Apocalipse” by Tiago Pimentel, received the Best Actor Award and the Avanca Competition Award, while the films “Cats with eight lives” by Tiago Roma Almeida and “Noites de Cinema” by Luís Diogo, received a Special Mention.
Susie Filipe won the Best Actress Award, Ivo Prata and Anabela Oliveira won Special Mentions for their appearances in the film “Noites de Cinema”.
The best animated film award in the Avanca Competition went to “Talaias” by Maria Raquel Atalaia.
The jury was made up of programmer and researcher Ana Maria Pires and film critics Germano Campos and Paulo Portugal.
The VR (Virtual Reality) award was given to the 360º animation film “ALUADO” by Cláudio Jordão. In this category, the jury formed by filmmaker Bernardo Cabral and cultural programmer Francisco Ávila, also awarded Special Mention to “Invisible” by Michel Lemieux (Canada).
The video award was given to “Ensayo para la memoria”, by Denise Chirich (Argentina), by film critic Nuno Reis and researcher Daniel Oliveira.
Together with director Rui Torres, this jury awarded the Television Series Award to the German program “Castro Gods” by Philipp Straetker.
The documentary “Luta da Erva” by Marcia Paraiso (Brazil) won the Television Award and “Elusive Mist” by Milana Majar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) won the World Premiere Award. “La Ciudad Se Mueve” by Alfonso Palazón (Spain) was distinguished with Special Mention. The jury was made up of photographer Mike Haydon (United Kingdom), poet António Souto, journalists Fernando Pinho, Manuel Freire, filmmaker Acácio Carreira, actor Carlos Rico, painter Henrique Vaz Duarte and professor Fátima Cabral. .
Tiago Pimentel's film “Once Upon a Time in the Apocalypse” was awarded the Filmmakers Under 30 Award. In this category, Honorable Mentions were also awarded to “Limbo” by Patrícia Fonseca and “The Seven Lives of Clay” by João Garcia Neto.
The Senior Prize was awarded to “A Janela de Pedra” by Carlos Silveira. The jury for these awards was made up of researcher Cláudia Martins and film society director Pedro Medeiros.
The “Trailer in Motion” competition distinguished the music video “À parte da Vida” by Carlos Silva, Helena Caspurro and Pedro C. de Almeida. Received Special Mention “Jamuary” by Joaquim Pavão. The jury was made up of musician Sérgio Ferreira and programmer Tin Krznar (Croatia).
Meanwhile, at “AVANCA|CINEMA, International Conference Cinema – Art, Technology, Communication”, Eng. Fernando Gonçalves Lavrador, in posthumous tribute to one of the most relevant Portuguese researchers in the area of semiotics, aesthetics and film theory, distinguished researcher Carla Ribeiro from ESE, Politécnico do Porto and CITCEM, with work on António Lopes Ribeiro and António Ferro.
The jury for this award was made up of academics José Ribeiro (ID+), Glória Moreno (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Spain), Rosemary Mountain (Concordia University, Canada), Petra Dominkava (FAMU, Czechia) and Liliana Rosa (Instituto Politécnico de Tomar) .
In total, 9 juries made up of 32 individuals from 10 countries awarded 24 prizes and 14 special mentions.
AVANCA takes place every year in Avanca and is organized by the Cine-Clube de Avanca and the Municipality of Estarreja with the support of ICA/Ministry of Culture, Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, Turismo Centro, Avanca Parish Council, Estarreja School Group, as well as various international organizations and local entities.
