Snook stealer snagged!
A tipster called in a fishing violation, but when our officer arrived, the sneaky snook stealer slipped away! An angler at the site told our officer what the suspect looked like and gave a description of the vehicle, so we took the investigation on the road. When our officer located the vehicle, the driver was wet and sandy and there was a wet cast net in the bed of the truck. What else was in the bed of the truck? 35 out-of-season undersized snook and a mangrove snapper! BTW, If the season were open, limit would be one snook per person per day by hook and line… and since cast netting snook is illegal, that was yet another citation.

Go Slow, Lookout Below!
Collisions with watercraft are a significant threat to Florida manatees. Not all interactions with watercraft end in death, many result in sublethal wounding, leaving external wounds that resolve into healed scars. To better understand sublethal injuries, researchers quantified watercraft-related scar patterns on nearly 3,000 manatee carcasses recovered during a recent ten-year period, to compare the number of scar patterns by life-stage, s*x, and region. Models indicated that approximately 96% of adults, approximately 70% of subadults, and approximately 34% of calves had watercraft-related scars. The raw data also showed that 1 in 4 adult manatees had been hit by watercraft 10 or more times during its life.
Please, when on the water this holiday weekend, slow down and watch out for manatees.
Report injured, distressed or dead manatees to our Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.
Early rescue efforts may save a manatee’s life!
