Call for papers Polimorfo vol. 6
Submission deadline: May 25, 2019
Theme: Against
To know the world means arranging it artificially, from the viewpoint of anthropology. We position and define its components based on a taxonomic system that depends, for example, on our culture. When classifying, we assign similarities and differences, while at the same time assigning values and hierarchies to what is being arranged, usually by way of what is known as a scheme of binary oppositions. In order to know them, we place the world and the others against us, rather than simply in front of us. This restricted system is put into crisis when the subjects or classified objects do not seem to respond to the pre-established order, rebelling and positioning themselves against it.
To be "against" means to assume the position, direction, or state opposed to the models or ways of doing that have been established or are expected by the prevailing system —whether voluntarily or involuntarily, premeditatedly or spontaneously. From the viewpoint of architecture, design and art, certain creators and users, as well as spaces and objects, have opposed the orthodoxies, norms, or canons that somehow threaten them —or they have been interpreted as being against these perceived threats. Being "against" something, therefore supposes a certain degree of courage, although time, in its thirst for transformation, tends to dilute or caricaturize these oppositions as part of a complex game, while at the same time strengthening them and even normalizing them.
In the upcoming issue of Polimorfo, we are interested in exploring how rebellious, dissenting, divergent, or heterodox positions arise and manifest themselves. We also want to explore what new positions are "against", what hopes they draw upon, what tensions they conceal, and what new alternative worlds they invite us to foresee.
