What does a koala eat? What do koalas eat? All of them are herbivorous vegetarians, and the main source of their food is eucalyptus shoots and leaves. Interestingly, koalas have practically no food competitors, since eucalyptus leaves contain little protein and hydrocyanic acid, so they are not interesting for other herbivores. However, even among eucalyptus trees, not all leaves and shoots are suitable for koalas, as they are able to select the least toxic ones thanks to their well-developed sense of smell. In general, according to zoologists, koalas eat only 120 species of eucalyptus out of 800 available in nature.
