🏆 Best Documentary – Potop. Postscriptum 🏆
The Jury had a very difficult task to choose from the documentaries presenting very engaging topics. In our final opinion, Potop. Postscriptum (Directed by Łukasz Czajka) deserves this year’s award.
The director, in a manner of speaking, 'delegated' the task of narrating this "Postscriptum" to two of the most outstanding figures in Polish cinematography – the director of Potop, Jerzy Hoffman, and one of Poland’s most accomplished actors, Daniel Olbrychski, who played the main protagonist in the movie. These two take us through the immense challenges of filming Potop, from both artistic and technical perspectives.
One of the specific challenges was meeting the high public expectations and bringing to life one of the most iconic pieces of Polish literature—part of Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz’s trilogy. How to overcome political and financial limitations? Who should be cast to portray the beloved characters that had assumed their own imagery over the years in readers’ minds?
This documentary does it exceptionally well, and with humor. The viewer is skillfully led to appreciate the massive technical challenges of this production, on a scale never before attempted in Poland, including the size of the cast, the reconstruction of locations, and the creation of historically accurate costumes.
It is this double layer of artistic and historical achievement in Potop. Postscriptum that convinced the jury to award it as this year’s Ekran TPFF Best Documentary. - Wojciech Wojnarowicz (Documentary Jury Member)
