We are back with the Q&A. Let's get to know Piotr Grelowski - the winner of the International Cochran Piano Competition 2016.
🎹 What is your name, what do you do, are you a professional musician?
My name is Piotr Grelowski, I am a professional concert pianist, I play concerts and teach piano at State Music School Complex in Koszalin as well as Academy of Arts in Szczecin, Poland.
🎹 Why did you take part in the Cochran Piano Competition? Why would you recommend it?
I was positively surprised by Cochran’s music. I thought I could understand some of his pieces well and perhaps play them well too. The most crucial factor was though that there was not much bother needed, so I just learned and prepared some pieces I deemed best and then registered them for the competition.
🎹 Was it easy for you to learn Julian Cochran’s compositions? Were you familiar with this composer and his music before?
It very much depends on the piece itself. Some are difficult to memorise as there are sometimes many polyphonic layers that go independently at the same time or irregular rhythmical structures. Others do not differ much from works of standard classical piano repertoire when it comes to pianistic challenges. This music was all new to me, but I liked the enjoyment and challenge of playing something that is not widely recognisable.
🎹 What have you learnt by taking part in the competition?
I learnt the music which is great and can be performed also at many unique occasions. I learnt about the composer who is a remarkably interesting personality and eventually got to know him. I met people who are enthusiastic about what they do various aspects connected with music. And finally, I have taken part in an adventure which improved my playing and equipped me with tools to move forward.
🎹 What would you say to pianists thinking of taking part in the 6th International CochranPiano Competition?
If Cochran’s music appeals to you, do not hesitate to study it. You can win everything; you can lose nothing.

The first online piano competition in the world, open to everyone regardless of their age, background, and residence.
The International Cochran Piano Competition was created in 2014 as the first entirely online piano competition in the world by Jakub Fiebig, founder of the Warsaw-based Julian Cochran Foundation, and was inspired by the music of Julian Cochran – Australian composer.
So far, four editions have taken place, in which 500 pianists from all over the world participated. Its unique formula allows participants to submit recordings of their performances digitally, with no travelling required. The repertoire has to consist of both Julian Cochran’s music and pieces of free choice.
The performances are evaluated by the Jury consisting of prominent, award-winning musicians who do not communicate between one another – so far, these have included Yejin Gil, Stuart Isacoff, Roberto Prosseda, Jacob Shaw, Gil Sullivan, Krzysztof Jabłoński, and Kevin Kenner. Moreover, not only do they assign scores, but they also provide written feedback for every participant, as one of the core assumptions of the Competition is to provide the contestants with an opportunity to develop. Each participant is also offered a Skype conversation with the Jury member of their choice. As the Competition is supposed to be accessible for everyone, there is no upper age limit.
Julian Cochran
The great Australian composer, Julian Cochran (b. 1974) was formally trained as a pure mathematician; however, at the age of fourteen, received a scholarship to Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium for advanced piano studies. With a deep musical sensitivity, Cochran taught himself to play numerous other instruments, some of them virtuosically, and this foundation of folk-music and melodic invention remained central to Cochran's compositional approach. Cochran's music is today performed all over the world, from Carnegie Hall to Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and St. Petersburg's Philharmonic Hall, and continues to inspire an increasing number of pianists. The public's affection with Cochran is drawn from the remarkable inner logic interlaced throughout the music, the frequent dance-like characteristic, and together its mysteriousness and refined opulence.
