Let's hear from one of our authors, lias Ben Mna about his fascinating article titled "Ghostface Needs a Hug – Self-care and the Return of the Repressed in Scream (2022)! :D

"In my article, I explore how the combination of sequel and reboot in the 2022 horror movie “Scream” informs personal strategies for dealing with trauma. Building on the psychoanalytical concept of the “return of the repressed”, I argue that the individualistic self-care strategies pursued by protagonist Sam Carpenter are doomed to fail, as they do not address the collective dimension of the trauma visited upon her family and the town of Woodsboro. This plays into the cyclical format of the Scream franchise and allows for a subtle critique of neoliberal and gendered conceptions of self-optimization. Through this analysis, I outline the contours of a society in perpetual crisis mode, which can only resolve its underlying issues by both remembering and moving on from the past collectively."

Now let's hear from Neli Dömötöri-Radenkova, our contributor who wrote an article about Conceptual metaphors in Hungarian and Bulgarian banking terminology.

"In my article, I explored Hungarian and Bulgarian banking terminology from a cognitive linguistic perspective through public documents of the Hungarian OTP Bank and its subsidiary in Bulgaria – DSK Bank. My goal was to detect conceptual metaphors in the two languages and to spot possible similarities and differences. I investigated the mental images related to certain financial operations and monetary transactions. I wanted to find out how English as a global language has influenced the banking terminology of Hungarian and Bulgarian. The latter seems to be heavily affected by English economic vocabulary."

Let's hear from one of our contributors, Shan Zhang:

"In my article, I wanted to offer a nuanced analysis of “cold heart” metaphors in Chinese and English, rather than simply categorizing cold-related terms as solely “cold”. I believe that varying degrees of coldness signify the intensity of emotions. This research aims to prove that the cultural backgrounds impact the perspectivization of certain conceptual metaphors. Investigating body metaphors is a way to approach cultural diversities."

Today let's hear from Hanne Nijtmans: "In my essay, I explored how The Intercept's fictional podcast Evening at the Talk House made use of podcast affordances to create a dystopian narrative that critiques twenty-first century US empire. More precisely, Talk House raises questions about the complicity of regular citizens in enabling "murder programs" (drone strikes and endless wars). At the same time, I consider how The Intercept's funding model that depended on tech billionaire Pierre Omidyar seems to create a blind spot, as Talk House fails to adequately address the role of capitalism for maintaining US empire."

Let's hear from our authors, Rayna Morel and Colby Miyose:
"In our writing, we sought to conceptualize trends in depicting the cancer experience from available films on the popular streaming service, Netflix, via textual analysis. Three films that we analyzed are, Then Came You (2019), Irreplaceable You (2018), and Her Only Choice (2018), which all belong to the comedy/drama genre. Three themes emerged including stigmatized sympathy and disgust, caretaking and domesticity, and cancer mantras of “live like you are dying” versus “fight to live.” While these types of films may bring awareness or hope to a prevalent health condition, the problem of romanticizing cancer remains."

Let's hear from one of our authors, Oliver J Hancock: "My article reads Rikki Ducornet’s The Stain and Kathy Acker’s Blood and Guts in High School through the lens of literary child studies and postmodern theory. These texts can usefully demonstrate the ways in which postmodernist literature relies on depictions of childhood to interrogate language and culture acquisition, analogised in terms of parental, pedagogical and institutional control. Ducornet and Acker’s novels, in particular, use a young girl’s voice—to borrow a phrase from Acker, a kind of ‘child-drag’—to explore themes of control and female sexuality, and to demonstrate the broader difficulty of achieving some “authentic” identity, when “identity” is so often viewed as violence submitted from without. In conjunction with poststructuralist and feminist theories of identity-making, this article explores how both Ducornet and Acker use the form of the bildungsroman to explore how a self-effacing girlhood can try to transform itself—through a characteristically postmodernist disassembly of language—into a new and more authentic language of the self."

A few words from our dear contributors T. Neuhaus & N. Thomas: "In our article we explore the marketing strategies employed by the NBA (and associated companies) to sell predominantly Black athletes to a chiefly white audience. Through historical contextualization and critical analysis, the NBA’s development from a non-profitable and scorned circus to a multi-faceted and multi-billion-dollar global attraction is examined. We analyze the NBA’s history with regard to its management of race and race-related stigma. The depiction of Michael Jordan as a highly marketable Black Superhero serves as a prime example for corporate colonization of black bodies – a concept which will be outlined in the paper. Considering the Malice in the Palace (2005) and the following corporate responses, our article re- and deconstructs the strategic illustration of Black athletes."
