My name is Alana Baloch. I am a fisherman, just as my father was before me. I grew up in this water; it is a part of me. It motivates me to have the courage and to work hard. Also, I love catching fish and I like animals too. Before COVID I used to earn around 500 a day, but this virus has affected our fishing business badly, so I had to find an additional income source to run my house. Many of my family members have lost their jobs and they are sitting at home and cursing the virus for this loss.

I am very optimistic; I am not a person who holds responsible others for whatever bad happen. I believe if God closes one door he opens 100. I had a small courtyard in front of my one-room house. I made shade on it from coconut leaves to make a home-built farm, and now you can see my goats and this cow. I love animals and now they are my small source of income. For the last three months, we are making small progress. I have now plastered my room floor and I have built a small toilet for my wife, our three children, and myself.

People make excuses. They must not; it is not good to build a happy home. We have to keep our ego aside to earn for our family. Family comes first. Still, I worry, if I become sick because of this virus and cannot work and no money comes in, what would happen to my family. My dream is to have a better life for my children. I am optimistic this can happen, as long as I live I have hope my hard work will pay off.

The Cart Puller.

I have been pulling this wooden cart in old Karachi markets now for 15 years. I do not pull the cart because I love doing it. I pull it because I am helpless. It is a worse thing to do. And now this corona has made this worst, with no work in hand.

My name is Ghulam Mustufa. I am from the Bangali community of Karachi. My age is around 60; I do not know my exact birth date. I got married at the age of 47 because I had no money and family, now my wife and I have three children. In the morning, I fetch the water and then have tea and biscuits for breakfast. I then take a ride into the city and bring my cart to the stand. Where I wait for the fare. I can carry just about everything in my wooden cart., Grocery, furniture, vegetable, flour, rice. Even animals! I travel any distance. Sometimes three to five kilometers. Wherever the fare takes me. But now I have less work in hand, because of this virus, all the markets are closed, so I have nothing to carry on my cart, therefore, sometimes I carry old women or men on it, or broken motorcycle and garbage too. I make a living through my cart. I try to make at least PKR 200 a day.

Whatever I earn goes to our basic needs. There are no savings. Inside of me I also want a better school for my children and a better house. And I wish that I wore better clothes, like you. But this deadly virus is scaring me day and night and only once I back home do I find peace. I am the happiest when I am around my children. I want my children to study and be successful. I do not want them to turn out like me. Every man wishes the best for his family. While I am pulling the cart, I am constantly worrying that I am 60 years old if this virus hits me and if something happens to me, who will take care of my family? this Riyasat-e-Madina scam? I am always lost in these thoughts.

My name is Kanjan, I live in the Hindu community in Karachi. When I wake up in the morning, I prepare flower bangles and garlands to sell, I make these with the help of thread and wire. When they are prepared, I go to hawk them. In lock-down I cannot sit anywhere, only sometimes I get space to sit and set my stall on footpath otherwise I hawk on the traffic lights.

My mother's first business was selling flowers, now it is mine. This virus has made our life miserable; I only can make a profit of around PKR 100 a day. This business is getting harder day-by-day; sometimes I have to borrow money to sustain it. I do it to feed my children and myself.

My husband no longer has a job, his mill owner terminated him because there is no production in his factory, so I do what I can. I belong to a cooperative Hindu community. I tried to save, but I was sick recently and I went through all my money, all my savings.

Our society helps in time like that. You know its usually us women, who support the family when there is a crisis, we also try to save for our children's education and for our personal needs, but now education seems luxury; as these days survival is more important than anything else so I am struggling hard. Before the virus, my flowers were for weddings so I could make good money, but now they are sold only for funerals and for sick people.

As a woman, sometimes I feel embarrassed hawking and sitting on footpath stall. If I see another business opportunity maybe I will try it, but I do not know any other skill to earn.

It’s entirely up to me to make money, so my children can survive.
