Leaders of prominent Islamic groups and mosques in India appealed to fellow Muslims on Monday to suspend plans for protests against derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) made by two members of the ruling Hindu-nationalist party.

The message to avoid big gatherings was circulated after demonstrations took a violent turn last week, leading to the death of two Muslim teenagers and the wounding of more than 30 people, including the police.

"It is the duty of every Muslim to stand together when anyone belittles Islam but at the same time it is critical to maintaining peace," said Malik Aslam, a senior member of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, a Muslim organisation that operates in several Indian states.

Punjab cabinet has given nod to a 30 percent increase in the salaries of government employees ahead of the fiscal year 2022-23.

The special cabinet meeting, led by Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz, approved the budget proposals for the next fiscal year 2022-23.

It was reported that employees of certain departments will get a 15 percent disparity allowance along with a 15 percent additional salary.

The top provincial administration of the country’s most populous region also approved the Annual Development Programme 2022-23.

Provincial minister Awais Leghari will present Punjab’s budget for the fiscal year 2022-23 today with a total outlay of around Rs 3 trillion. At least Rs683.5bn has been proposed for development schemes, Rs56 billion for the education sector, and Rs173 billion for the health sector.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a massive selling pressure on Monday as the benchmark KSE-100 index shed more than 1,000 points.

The market began its slide soon after opening at 42,013 points, with the benchmark KSE-100 index plunging 1134 points.

The KSE-100 index closed at 40,879 points.

On the other hand, the devaluation of the Pakistani rupee in the interbank continued on Monday after it fell to a record low in the interbank against the US dollar.

According to forex dealers, the US dollar rose by Rs0.65 in the interbank to trade at Rs203. In the open market, the dealers said that it traded between Rs 204 and Rs 207.

The rupee dived as a relentless surge in global crude oil prices raised concerns about a sustained rise in imported inflation and a widening current account deficit.

The country is facing a balance of payments crisis with the central bank’s foreign exchange reserves falling to $9.2 billion.

World Day Against Child Labour was observed on Sunday, while more than 6.4 million children in Sindh are out of school and engaged in the worst form of child labour that deprives them of their right to health, education and other basic facilities.

Civil society organisations working on child rights expressed dismay over the rising trend of child labour and appealed to the Sindh and federal governments to take measures against the menace. "There are about 1.7 million bonded labourers in Sindh; of these, over 700,000 children are bonded labourers working under indecent and inhuman working and living conditions imposed by their landlords in the agriculture sector," said Akram Khaskheli, President of Hari Welfare Association (HWA), which works for the peasants and child rights in Sindh.

The Pakistani rupee shed at least Rs1.75 against the US dollar in the interbank market to reach Rs204.10 before noon on Monday.

The rupee had closed at Rs202.35 against the dollar on Friday, as per the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

Similarly, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) touched a two-year low at 41,231 points by losing 784 points in the morning. On Friday, the stock market had closed above 42,000 points as investors remained optimistic about the upcoming budget announcement.

Sindh transport department has announced to ban old and outdated buses plying in Karachi after the completion of mass transit projects.

This was announced by Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also holds the portfolio of the transport and mass transit department.

In a statement, Memon said that the provincial government had conveyed the decision to the representative associations of the operators of public transport services in the city.

“Thousands of buses are being brought to Karachi for which talks have been held with China and Turkey,” he said. He further said that People’s Bus Service would begin in Karachi in the current month.

He further shared: “Work on the Red Line project in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank is in full swing while a proposal has also come up on the Blue Line project”.

Sharjeel Memon said that work on the Orange Line BRT project is almost completed and project would be launched by the end of June.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Monday approved a hike in the price of electricity by Rs3.99 per unit.

Announced under the head of monthly fuel price adjustment for April, it will apply to all customers except Karachi-Electric and lifeline.

Earlier this month, NEPRA had approved a massive increase of Rs7.91 per unit in the electricity tariffs.

The depreciation of the rupee and rising oil prices in the international market have been cited as reasons for the tariff hike.

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane will depart for the Syrian city of Aleppo on Monday (today) to bring back Pakistanis stranded in the war-torn country because of the bombing and postponing of flights at the Damascus airport.

According to statement released by the national carrier on Sunday, the PIA finalised its plan to send a flight to Syria following a request made by the Pakistani envoy in Syria in a letter to the Pakistani government and the chief executive officer of the airline.

The decaying 45-year-old oil tanker known as the FSO Safer, long used as a floating storage platform and now abandoned off the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida, has not been serviced since Yemen was plunged into civil war.

Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said Friday the government would abolish subsidies and go for positive taxation in order to avoid becoming another Sri Lanka. Speaking in Geo News programme “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada kay Saath”, he said Pakistan has to spend $21 billion in paying back debt. Besides, he said, the government has increase reserves in the face of $10-12 billion deficit. Against this backdrop, default would be the only option if Pakistan quits IMF programme now, the minister added.

To a question about State Bank’s autonomy and former minister Shaukat Tarin’s insistence on looking at the core inflation, not the consumer price index (CPI), Miftah said he trust bank governor’s competence.

Miftah said that given bank’s autonomy, he would not direct the bank on monetary policy or currency rate, but “I will do my job.” He said he does not concur with every part of policy of bank’s autonomy, adding that raise in the interest rate by the bank would shrink the monetary policy that would help contain inflation.

Speaking in a private TV channel programme, former finance minister Shaukat Tarin said he had been avoiding taxing petroleum products. He said there are two ways — one, purchasing oil from Russia which is available at a discount of Rs45-50 per litre and, two, giving targeted subsidy unlike Rs2,000 per household extended by this government. He criticized the government for raising the taxable income of the salaried person, saying those paying taxes are now out of the tax net. And then the government has subjected them to massive taxation, he lamented. Responding to a question, Hammad Azhar said current inflation rate was 13.5 percent which would be at 20 percent in July. He predicted the rate might increase to over 30 percent. Hammad rejected projected Rs4800 billion figure of budget deficit as incorrect warning they would be facing very high budget deficit next year. He said it was difficult to achieve 5 percent growth. The growth rate would not be even 2-3 percent next year, he said. Talking about Rs7004 billion FBR tax target, Hammad opined it should be Rs8000.

Two people from Pennsylvania, United States, who fell into a tank full of chocolate on Thursday at an M&M and Mars factory were rescued, reported Fox13.

While for some people, dipping in chocolate would be a dream, it was not fun for these people. The chocolate tank was fortunately not very deep and reportedly waist-high.

About 24 people from emergency crews arrived on the scene and tried to cut out a hole at the bottom of the tank. However, the victims were able to pull themselves out.

The dispatchers reported that no one was hurt in the accident.
