The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday said it had made “significant strides” in enhancing international connectivity through the facilitation of Transworld Associate (TWA), the landing partner of 2Africa submarine cable for Pakistan.

The initiative “will improve Pakistan’s international telecommunications infrastructure and enhance connectivity”, it added.

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk’s startup xAI said it had raised $6 billion from investors in its latest funding round, as it battles stiff competition in the artificial intelligence market.

The firm, whose flagship product is the Grok chatbot, garnered support from US venture capitalists, chipmakers NVIDIA and AMD, and investment funds from Saudi Arabia and Qatar among others.

After remaining unchanged in the previous session, gold prices in Pakistan declined on Tuesday, in line with their fall in the international rates. In the local market, the price of gold per tola clocked in at Rs272,600, after a single-day decrease of Rs800.

The 10-gram gold was sold at Rs233,711 after it registered a decrease of Rs685, according to rates shared by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA).

Advisor to Finance Minister, Khurram Schehzad on Tuesday urged the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) and Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) to develop a roadmap aimed at increasing Pakistan’s weight within the MSCI Frontier Markets (FM) Index.

This should ultimately lead to Pakistan’s inclusion in the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, said Schehzad during his visit to the PSX, to discuss strategies for enhancing the depth and performance of the capital market, read a press release issued by the PSX.

A strike at Starbucks’ US stores will expand to over 300 stores on Tuesday, with more than 5,000 workers expected to walk off the job, before the five-day work stoppage ends later on Christmas Eve, the workers’ union said.

Starbucks Workers United, representing employees at 525 stores nationwide, said more than 60 US stores across 12 major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Seattle, were shut on Monday.

The slowing inflationary trend in Pakistan is likely to persist as the CPI-based figure is expected to clock in at 4% in December, marking a 6.5-year low, according to a report by brokerage house JS Global on Tuesday.

“Following a 4.9% reading in Nov-2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is expected to drop to 4% in Dec-2024, marking a 6.5-year low continuing Pakistan’s current sharp disinflation trend,” stated the report.
