Antarctic sea-ice at 'mind-blowing' low alarms experts.

The sea-ice surrounding Antarctica is well below any previous recorded winter level, satellite data shows, a worrying new benchmark for a region that once seemed resistant to global warming.

"It's so far outside anything we've seen, it's almost mind-blowing," says Walter Meier, who monitors sea-ice with the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

An unstable Antarctica could have far-reaching consequences, polar experts warn.

Antarctica's huge ice expanse regulates the planet's temperature, as the white surface reflects the Sun's energy back into the atmosphere and also cools the water beneath and near it.

Without its ice cooling the planet, Antarctica could transform from Earth's refrigerator to a radiator, experts say.

The ice that floats on the Antarctic Ocean's surface now measures less than 17 million sq km - that is 1.5 million sq km of sea-ice less than the September average, and well below previous winter record lows.

That's an area of missing ice about five times the size of the British Isles.

That's an area of missing ice about five times the size of the British Isles.

Sea-ice forms in the continent's winter (March to October) before largely melting in summer, and is part of an interconnected system that also consists of icebergs, land ice and huge ice shelves - floating extensions of land ice jutting out from the coast.

Sea-ice acts as a protective sleeve for the ice covering the land and prevents the ocean from heating up.

Dr Caroline Holmes at the British Antarctic Survey explains that the impacts of shrinking sea-ice may become evident as the season transitions to summer - when there's potential for an unstoppable feedback loop of ice melting.

As more sea-ice disappears, it exposes dark areas of ocean, which absorb sunlight instead of reflecting it, meaning that the heat energy is added into the water, which in turn melts more ice. Scientists call this the ice-albedo effect.

That could add a lot more heat to the planet, disrupting Antarctica's usual role as a regulator of global temperatures.

"Are we awakening this giant of Antarctica?" asks Prof Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter. It would be "an absolute disaster for the world," he says.

There are signs that what is already happening to Antarctica's ice sheets is in the worst-case scenario range of what was predicted, says Prof Anna Hogg, an Earth scientist at the University of Leeds.

Since the 1990s, the loss of land ice from Antarctica has contributed 7.2mm to sea-level rise.

Even modest increases in sea levels can result in dangerously high storm surges that could wipe out coastal communities. If significant amounts of land ice were to start melting, the impacts would be catastrophic for millions of people around the world.

TikTok fined €345m over children's data privacy.

Irish regulators have fined TikTok €345m (£296m) for violating children's privacy.

The complaint concerned how the social media app handled children's data in 2020 - particularly around age verification and privacy settings.

It is the biggest fine to date TikTok has received from regulators.

A spokesperson for the social media firm said it "respectfully disagree[s] with the decision, particularly the level of the fine imposed".

"The criticisms are focused on features and settings that were in place three years ago, and that we made changes to well before the investigation even began, such as setting all under 16 accounts to private by default," they said.

The fine was issued by Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) privacy law.

GDPR sets out rules that companies must follow when handling data.

The DPC found that TikTok had not been transparent enough with children about its privacy settings, and raised questions about how their data was processed.

Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon told BBC News the inquiry also found that accounts made by those aged between 13 and 17 were made public by default on registration, meaning the content they posted was visible to anyone.

"That is precisely at the hands of TikTok because of the way they designed the platform, and we say that infringed the data protection by design and by the default requirements of the GDPR," Ms Dixon said.

The firm has been given three months to makes its data processing completely comply with GDPR.

Prof Sonia Livingstone, who researches children's digital rights and experiences at the London School of Economics and Political Science, welcomed the DPC's decision.

"[Children] want to participate in the digital world without being exploited or manipulated. And that means that platforms must explain how their data are treated and, most important, treat their data fairly, since privacy is a child's right," she said.

There remains an investigation under way about whether TikTok has illegally transferred data from the EU to China. TikTok is owned by Beijing firm ByteDance.

European fines
Despite the fine being in the hundreds of millions, it is actually smaller than other penalties seen in recent months - such as the €1.2bn (£1bn) fine Meta was given by the regulator in May for mishandling people's data when transferring it between Europe and the United States.

It is however substantially larger than the £12.7m fine TikTok was issued by the UK data watchdog in April for allowing children aged under 13 to use the platform in 2020.

The fine issued by the DPC specifically refers to 2020, and TikTok took several actions in the years following to make it more compliant.

This included it becoming one of the first social media sites to make accounts for 13 to 15-year-olds private by default in January 2021.

It will also introduce a change this month which will mean all 16 and 17-year-olds signing up to the platform will have their account set to private by default.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa becomes Pakistan's 29th chief justice after Bandial hangs up his robes.
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Judge Justice Qazi Faez on Sunday took oath as the 29th chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) after his predecessor Umar Ata Bandial hung up his robes a day earlier.

President Dr Arif Alvi administered the oath at a ceremony held at the President House in Islamabad. Top government and military officials, including caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Army Chief Asim Munir, senators and foreign ambassadors, attended the ceremony.

Justice Isa's tenure as the country's chief justice, however, will be quite brief, as he is set to retire from the position on October 25, 2024.

He took oath as the apex court's judge on September 5, 2014. Despite being the senior puisne judge, he was not assigned any constitutional case for the past three years, following a presidential reference filed against him in 2019.

The newly-appointed top judge of the country was born on October 26, 1959, in Quetta. His father, the late Qazi Mohammad Isa, was a prominent leader in the Pakistan Movement and a close associate of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

After completing his initial education in Quetta, Justice Isa pursued O and A levels studies from the Karachi Grammar School. He then moved to London to pursue his higher education in law to complete the bar professional examination at the Inns of Court School of Law.

He joined the Balochistan High Court on January 30, 1985, and became an advocate of the Supreme Court in March 1998. After an emergency was declared during the Pervez Musharraf era on November 3, 2007, Justice Isa decided not to appear before judges who took oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO).

At the same time, after the decision of November 3 was annulled by the Supreme Court, the Balochistan High Court judges resigned, while Justice Isa was directly appointed as the judge of the provincial high court on August 5, 2009.

He remained associated with the field of law for 27 years before being appointed as a judge in the Balochistan High Court and the Supreme Court. During this time, his assistance was sought in various important cases by different high courts and the Supreme Court, as well as for handling international arbitrations.

For the past five months, Justice Isa — who took the oath as an SC judge on September 5, 2014 — has engaged in chamber work only. As a form of protest following his disagreement with chief justice on suo motu powers, he has refrained from participating in any cases.

In March this year, Justice Isa and Justice Qazi Ameenuddin issued a ruling, stating that hearing of all cases under Article 184(3) should be suspended until the apex court first makes its rules with regards to the SC’s Practice and Procedure Act.

With a 45-year-long career in the legal field, Justice Isa possesses a rich background. Prior to his judicial appointment, he contributed articles on various topics, such as the Constitution, law, Islam, and the environment, to Pakistan's leading English news publications.

He also co-authored a book, 'Mass Media Laws and Regulations in Pakistan', in 1997. Additionally, Justice Isa authored the report 'Balochistan: Case and Demand' published by the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) in 2007.

اضافے کے بعد پیٹرول کی نئی قیمت 331 روپے 38 پیسے فی لیٹر جبکہ ڈیزل کی نئی قیمت 329 روپے 18 پیسے فی لیٹر ہوگئی۔

افغان طالبان نے یونیورسٹی اسکالر شپ کے لیے دبئی جانے والی 100 طالبات کو روک لیا۔

برطانوی خبر ایجنسی کے مطابق افغان طالبات کو متحدہ عرب امارات (یو اے ای) کے ایک کاروباری گروپ نے اسپانسرکیا تھا۔

کاروباری گروپ کے بانی چیئرمین خلف احمد الحبطور نے سوشل میڈیا پر جاری ایک بیان میں کہا ہے کہ انہوں نے 100 افغان لڑکیوں کے لیے امارات میں رہائش، یونیورسٹی کی تعلیم اور محفوظ نقل و حرکت کا انتظام کیا تھا، لڑکیوں کو افغانستان سے لانے کے لیے خصوصی طیارے کو ادائیگی بھی کردی گئی تھی تاہم افغان حکومت نے تعلیم کے لیے امارات جانےکی خواہشمند طالبات کو اجازت دینے سے انکار کردیا۔

اماراتی تاجر نے سوشل میڈیا پر ایک افغان طالبہ کی آڈیو بھی شیئر کی جس میں طالبہ کا کہنا تھا کہ ان کے ساتھ گھر کے مرد بھی تھے تاہم کابل انتظامیہ کے اہلکاروں نے انہیں جہاز میں سوار نہیں ہونے دیا۔

خبر ایجنسی کے مطابق اس معاملے پر طالبان انتظامیہ یا وزارت خارجہ کی جانب سے فوری طور پر کوئی جواب نہیں دیا گیا ہے۔

خیال رہےکہ طالبان حکومت نے گزشتہ سال دسمبر میں خواتین کی اعلیٰ تعلیم پر پابندی لگا دی تھی اور عالمی برادری کے شدید احتجاج اور دباؤ کے باجود پابندی نہیں ہٹائی گئی۔

اس سے قبل افغانستان میں لڑکیوں کی ثانوی تعلیم پر بھی پابندی لگادی گئی تھی اور طالبات کو صرف پرائمری تک تعلیم کی اجازت ہے

چندریان 3: انڈیا چاند کے قطب جنوبی پر پہنچنے والا پہلا ملک بن گیا۔

چندریان تھری نے بدھ کی شام تقریباً چھ بجے چاند کے جنوبی حصے پر لینڈنگ کی۔

اس کے نتیجے میں انڈیا چاند کے اس حصے پر خلائی جہاز اتارنے والا پہلا اور امریکہ، سابق سوویت یونین اور چین کے بعد سافٹ لینڈنگ کرنے والا چوتھا ملک بن گیا ہے

انڈیا کی خلائی ایجنسی اسرو نے کامیاب لینڈنگ کے بعد اپنے ہیڈکوارٹر کے آپریشن سینٹر کی تصاویر بھی شیئر کیں جہاں سائنسدان اور ٹیکنیکل سٹاف کامیاب لینڈنگ پر خوشی کا اظہار کرتے نظر آئے۔
کامیابی حاصل ہونے کے فوراً بعد انڈیا کے وزیر اعظم نریندر مودی نے قوم سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ یہ ایک پرمسرت موقع ہے اور یہ صرف انڈیا کی کامیابی نہیں بلکہ سب کی کامیابی ہے۔

انھوں نے کہا ’ہمارا نظریہ ہے کہ ایک دنیا ایک قوم۔ ہمارا چاند کا مشن خلائی سائنسی تحقیق کی جانب ایک مثبت قدم ہے۔ انڈیا مستقبل میں اپنی خلائی تحقیق کو چاند سے آگے لے کر جائے گا اور جلد اسرو سورج پر تحقیق کے لیے اپنا مشن بھیجے گا۔‘

نریندر مودی کا کہنا تھا کہ ’آج انڈیا کے ہر گھر میں جشن کا سماں ہے، میں بھی اس جشن میں اپنی قوم کے ساتھ ہوں۔ میں چندریان کی پوری ٹیم کو اور اس مشن میں کسی بھی طرح مدد کرنے والوں کو مبارکباد دیتا ہوں۔ میں 140 کروڑ لوگوں کو مبارک دیتا ہوں۔‘

ان کا مزید کہنا تھا کہ ’آج آپ سب کے محنت سے ہم اُس مقام پر پہنچے ہیں جہاں آج تک دُنیا کا کوئی مُلک نہیں پہنچا۔ یہ مشن دیگر مُمالک کے خلائی مشنز کی بھی مدد کرے گا۔ یہ دن ہمیں ایک روشن مستقبل کی جانب لے کہ جانے والا ہے۔‘

چندریان 3 کب روانہ ہوا تھا اور اس کا مقصد کیا ہے؟
چندریان 3 کا خلائی مشن 14 جولائی کو انڈیا کی جنوبی ریاست آندھرا پردیش سے شروع ہوا تھا اور 40 دن کے طویل سفر کے بعد یہ آج چاند کے قطب جنوبی پر اترا ہے۔

اس خلائی جہاز نے چاند کے مدار میں داخل ہونے سے پہلے تقریباً دس دن زمین کے گرد چند چکر لگائے جس کے بعد یہ پہلے ٹرانس لونر اور پھر پانچ اگست کو چاند کے مدار میں داخل ہونے میں کامیاب ہوا تھا۔

17 اگست کو اس مشن کا آخری مرحلہ شروع ہوا تھا جب لینڈر پروپلشن ماڈیول سے الگ ہوا جو بعد میں اسے چاند کے قریب لے گیا تھا۔

کامیاب لینڈنگ کے بعد اس خلائی مشن سے چھ پہیوں والی ایک گاڑی چاند کی سطح پر اُترے گی اور وہاں موجود چٹانوں اور گڑھوں کے گرد گھومے گی، اس دوران وہ جمع کیے جانے والے اہم ڈیٹا اور تصاویر کو واپس زمین پر تجزیے کے لیے بھیجے گی۔

چاند کی سطح پر اُترنے والی یہ گاڑی ایسے آلات لے کر جا رہی ہے جو چاند کی سطح کی خصوصیات، سطح کے قریب کے ماحول اور سطح کے نیچے کیا ہو رہا ہے جیسے معاملات کا مطالعہ کرنے کے لیے 'ٹیکٹونک ایکٹوٹی' کے بارے میں معلومات جمع کرے گی۔

چندریان 3 مشن کے بڑے اہداف میں سے ایک ’پانی سے بننے والی برف‘ کی تلاش ہے، سائنسدانوں کا کہنا ہے کہ چندریان اس برف کی تلاش میں کامیاب رہتا ہے تو مستقبل میں چاند پر انسانوں کی رہائش میں مدد مل سکتی ہے۔
چندریان 3 چاند پر کہاں اترا اور اس جگہ کا انتخاب کیوں کیا گیا؟
انڈین سائنسدانوں نے اپنی خلائی گاڑی اتارنے کے لیے چاند کے جس حصے کا انتخاب کیا ہے وہ اس سیارے کے قطب جنوبی کا دوردراز خطہ ہے اور مستقل طور پر سائے میں رہنے کی وجہ سے اسے 'چاند کا اندھیرے والا حصہ' بھی کہا جاتا ہے۔

چاند کا جنوبی قطب ابھی تک بڑی حد تک غیر دریافت شدہ ہے۔ وہاں کی سطح کا رقبہ چاند کے شمالی قطب کے مقابلے میں بہت بڑا ہے۔

سائنسدانوں کو اس کے بارے میں بہت کم علم ہے اور ان کا کہنا ہے کہ یہاں اترنا خطرناک یا مشکل ہو سکتا ہے تاہم ان کا یہ بھی کہنا ہے کہ اس بات کے غالب امکانات ہیں کہ چاند کا جو حصہ سائے میں ہے وہاں پانی کی موجودگی کے آثار ملیں۔

اسرو نے اس سے پہلے بھی دو بار چاند کے جنوبی قطب کے لیے مشن روانہ کیا تھا جو کہ ناکام ہو گئے تھے تاہم چندریان 3 کی اس خطے میں اُترنے کی کوشش کامیاب رہی۔

وفاقی حکومت نے پیٹرولیم مصنوعات کی قیمتوں میں اضافہ کر دیا۔

وفاقی وزارت خزانہ نے پیٹرولیم مصنوعات کی قیمتوں میں اضافے کا نوٹیفکیشن جاری کردیا۔ نوٹیفکیشن میں کہا گیا ہے کہ پیٹرول کی قیمت میں 5 روپے کا اضافہ کیا گیا ہے اور نئی قیمت 272 روپے فی لیٹر ہوگی۔

نوٹیفکیشن کے مطابق ہائی اسپیڈ ڈیزل کی قیمت 13 روپے اضافے کے بعد 293 روپے فی لیٹر ہوگی جبکہ مٹی کا تیل 2 روپے 56 پیسے مہنگا ہو کر 190 روپے 29 پیسے فی لیٹر ہوگیا۔
