Hamas announced that its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an overnight strike in Tehran, marking a significant escalation in the conflict between Israel and the militant group. Haniyeh’s death represents a substantial strategic and symbolic blow to Hamas, as he was the group's most prominent figure managing its political operations from abroad.
This incident follows the recent assassination of Hezbollah’s senior military commander in Lebanon, further heightening tensions in the region. According to Hamas, the strike targeted Haniyeh and his bodyguard in the building where he was staying after attending the inauguration of Iran's new president. Hamas officials condemned the killing as a “grave escalation” and vowed that Haniyeh’s death would “not pass in vain.” Iran’s Supreme Leader also responded, stating it is “our duty to seek justice for the blood of our dear guest.”
