[QUILL NEWS!📣] Fr. Ernald to communicants: “When you get your first communion, think of it as a special high-five or a big hug from God."

High-fiive from Fr. Ernald M. Andal SJ as he welcomes 231 young Ateneans receiving the Sacrament of the Holy Communion at the University Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

[QUILL UPDATE] Recreation minus the pause button

The AdZU grade school filled with excitement and vibrancy for the re-opening of the GS playground on October 24, 2023 in the Grade School Complex.

This special event was turned over in collaboration with PTA Executive Board headed by the PTA President, Mr. Fradzkhan Ilaji. This is a great way for students to be build character and camaraderie towards others.

There are many benefits for the playground. Students can develop social skills with their peers–letting them interact within each other. The playground is a great example of "social scenes" in school. As quoted by the Grade School Principal, Ma’am Elena Segurigan, “The playground is a vital space to create memories; form friendship, teamwork and resiliency.”

Students develop crucial physical, social and emotional skills necessary to gain self-confidence, improve coordination and advanced critical thinking capabilities–engaging in their senses which give great extent in learning outside the classroom.

“The children’s laughter reminds us how we used to be.” It is astonishing to reap how a simple space plays an important role in a child’s development and how children’s happiness reminds us how we were before, Mr. Ilaji quoted.

We are thankful to the community for doing their best and cheers to the people who gave out this amazing event!

Leadership Training: Molding 21st century leaders of Modern Times

With the aim of fostering a sense of social involvement, The Student Activity Office in partnership with the Campus Ministry Office organized Leadership Training 2023.

The organizers ensure maximum students' engagement embedding "Encanto" vibes in the training proper. "I really like the training. I am not only having fun, but I am also learning how to be a good leader" A student leader said.

As an initial activity the participants wrote their promises to help preserve the planet in the form of promised letters.

Ms. Ronamae Luy, the Student Activity Coordinator said, "Being a leader is not a title but a mindset." Everyone can be a leader; it only takes a good mindset to become a good one.

Bro. Rex Francis Cos, SJ, moved students' hearts as he presented the session on ‘Leading Oneself’. In his words, "Everyone is a combination of lights and shadows," stating that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, one must be brave to surpass all the challenges in life.

Additionally, Mr. Abdu Rahim Kenoh III, emphasized that leadership isn't just telling others what to do but leading by example. Subsequently, he said that the Head, Heart, Hands, and Health play a crucial part in leadership.

He left the campers with a quote that says, "The BEST and most effective leaders are those who lead by example".

The speakers emphasized that leadership begins with one's self and it brings out to lead others.

Corroborating this idea, Fr. Guillrey Anthony M. Andal, SJ, the University President highlighted the true meaning of a leadership - "To be a true LEADER is to be a SERVANT". We recognize the persistence of the young leaders for attending and participating in this year's Student Leadership Camp.

Ring: Call for Safety

Due to the environmental risks caused by climate change, grade schoolers practiced safety measures to eradicate earthquake vulnerability.

With the two major fault zones -Sulu and Cotabato trench- Zamboanga City is prone to earthquake disasters that can cause massive destruction and harm.

Ateneo Grade School intensifies readiness and preparation in facing disasters with the up-to-date and relevant equipment used during the earthquake drill.

The alarm reached the edges of the complex allowing 100% participation of students, faculty and staff during the drill.

The Director of the Prefect of Students remains with a sharp mission to protect the welfare of the students as the center of AdZU's education.

Inspiring the Young: Parents as Classroom Role Models

Last September 15, 2023, Ateneo de Zamboanga Grade School marked Literacy Month with the event "My Dad or Mom in My Classroom." In collaboration with the English Department, this initiative aimed to bridge generational gaps, celebrate literacy, and ignite young minds.

Selected parents, representing diverse professions shared insights into their careers; providing students with a glimpse of their working world and its contributions to society. Attorney Alexis De Lima, delivered a powerful message saying, “As Ateneans, it is embedded in us to always excel. We are always striving for excellence, but we are taught to be humble. Sometimes, there are odds that do not come in your favor that will inspire you to pursue your dreams.” Emphasizing that the path of the students’ goal varies and promoting branches of opportunities and probabilities to reach greater heights may be different to every individual.

On other account, Entrepreneurs Mrs Ellimelyn and Mr Kent Tan, set flames to the hearts of young minds saying, “If you make mistakes, You’re learning. And if you don’t, you’re not learning at all.”

As the program concluded, the Ateneo de Zamboanga Grade School community and the English Department expressed heartfelt gratitude to the parents who inspired and educated the next generation. This event celebrated Literacy Month, inspired students, and strengthened bonds within the school community; showcasing Ateneo de Zamboanga Grade School's commitment to foster holistic education and community engagement.
