PHILIPPINES FACES ANOTHER INFECTION AS OMICRON LOOMS
By Luzel Caballero

Scientists around the world are racing to understand how widespread Omicron is and how severe a threat it may pose. It's still unclear whether or to what extent the virus may resist existing vaccine.

The new "variant of concern" gives the world a glimpse of where the pandemic might be headed. It should also prompt the government to focus on evidence-based policies and listen to the calls of the health sector, said Joshua L. San Pedro, a medical doctor who started the coalition for Peoples Right to Health.

"Evidence-based policies should be the standard by now, almost two years into the pandemic," he said in a Facebook Messenger chat. "Learning from other countries' experiences as well as ours, there is some semblance of what is effective and how it ought to be implemented."

Pauline F. Convicar, a Filipino emergency physician said she's worried of another wave of infections from the Omicron variant. This one appeared to spread more than twice as quickly as Delta - just as the Philippines relaxed lockdowns amid decreasing cases.

At the Philippines Genome (PGC) medical expects are racing to screen samples from travelers to see if Omicron has arrived.

“They have yet to detect the virus after screening 18,000 samples but it is possible that it has entered our borders. We are on the lookout for that," PGC Executive director Cynthia P. Saloma told a televised news briefing at weekend.

The Philippines needs a "Marshall plan" to revitalize its public health system, said Renzo R. Guinto, a doctor and associate professor of global public health at the St. Lukes Medical Center College of Medicine, adding that the government should invest in research and surveillance activities that will detect disease-causing pathogens to make sure we do not the ground zero for the next pandemic.

PHILIPPINE WOMEN'S TEAM SHOOTS A SPOT IN 2021 ASIAN BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
by Rafael Bancajergan

The country has been weighing up against its Asian competitors as
Philippine volleyball continues to make a return.

The Philippine beach volleyball pair of Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons, was one of the two women of the team that play for the Philippines in the AVC Senior Beach Volleyball Championships in Thailand late last month.

SiPon tandem faced some of the best teams in the continent during the tournament including the eventual champions country, Thailand. The tandem made it all the way to the round of 16 where they were eliminated by a team from Japan.

[OPINION]

ARE THE PUPILS ACTUALLY LEARNING DURING THIS PANDEMIC?
By Kristine Mae Merlin

Ma’am/Sir my parents are busy working to earn a living, no one will attend to me doing my modules.” “I wasn’t able to finish my modules because my guardians and I didn’t know how to do it.”

These are some of the situations of the pupils like me as we embrace the so-called “new normal” in education. Despite efforts of the education sector to continue learning during the pandemic, the “new normal” has continued to be a scourge not only for teachers but also for pupils.

Some of the parents enroll their pupils not because they want to learn, but because they don’t want to be left behind. They answer their modules not because they want to learn but because they need to comply with these requirements to pass.

As a pupil I am not in favor of modular distance learning, but we must continue to learn despite these challenging times. Both the students and teachers are at disadvantage. The quality of education, however, it is hard to admit, may have dropped. But because we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, it’s not their fault. Learning is hard when done on your own.

[EDITORIAL]

A SHOT TO SAVE
By Janelle Maalihan

Are you ready to take the shots? Oh! Do shots make you nervous? Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe for children? A lot of hurdles and questions remain about COVID-19 shots.

The Philippines has started vaccinating young people aged 12-17 against the coronavirus. Before recommending the COVID-19 vaccination for children, scientists conducted clinical trials with thousands of children and no serious safety concerns were identified.

The FDA gave the COVID-19 vaccine emergency authorization to use in children ages 12-17 years old. According to Dr. Anna Ong-Lim, a pediatric infectious diseases expert, administering antivirus jabs to children will help the country achieve herd immunity.

Still, some parents have opted not to have their children vaccinated. They dread how their child might act on getting a shot. About two-thirds of children and one-fourth of adults have a fear of needles. Parents who are enthusiastic about the vaccines may not want their children to be first in line. They are afraid of the vaccines' effect. There are plenty of ‘what-ifs' a parent could ask themselves before their child gets vaccinated. What if there are uniquely bad side effects? What if they rushed things too much? What if there are long-term side effects we don't yet know about? Parents get so worried about the risks of vaccines that they forget to worry about the risks of the diseases vaccines prevent. It’s important to know and worry about those, as they can be serious.

The decisions about your health and the health of your loved ones are one of the most important decisions you will make in your lives. It's your choice whether you want to take the vaccine shot or not.
