The Social Work Department, under the College of Human Sciences, gathered at the University Tunnel earlier today to celebrate World Social Work Day through a Gathering of Gratitude.

With the theme, โ€œBuen Vivir, shared future for
transformative change,โ€ students, faculties, and delegates came together to commemorate the dedicated work of social workers across the globe on World Social Work Day.

Vilma N. Lapitan, a representative from the Center for Community Development and Extension Services, shone a light on the importance of social workers in Filipino lives, especially for women and children.

"Social workers do not become wealthy," Lapitan said. "But we are rich in love from people. We care for our clients who are in need."

The program culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a potluck. Students were also encouraged to post their feelings as social workers on a freedom wall.

Dive into the insights of Ms. UCU 2024 Irene Co (BS Civil Engineering) and 2nd Runner-up, Angela Rivera (BA Communication), as they unveil their strategic visions to drive women's empowerment at Urdaneta City University during Women's Month.

From leveraging their platforms to ignite change to fostering a culture of inclusivity and leadership, these reigning beauty queens are poised to inspire and elevate the status of women on campus and beyond.

๐—œ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ: As the UCU Ambassadress, my definition of a woman goes beyond words โ€” it's a powerful narrative of strength, empathy, understanding, and compassion. A woman is a force, possessing qualities that can move mountains [and] standing resiliently against existing barriers, not just for herself but for everyone.

In my role as an Ambassadress of Urdaneta City University, I advocate for women as architects of change. We are the voices championing fairness, equality, and a world where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive.

Let's create a future where strength transcends gender, breaks barriers, and each woman's journey serves as an inspiration for others. Let's transform the world into a stage where every woman's story is not just heard but appreciated and celebrated.

As a university ambassadress, I redefine the essence of womanhood through strength in vulnerability, resilience in adversity, and wisdom in nurturing. A woman is an intricate masterpiece who transcends stereotypes and embraces diversity.

As an ambassadress, I serve as a voice to empower women to break barriers, pursue education, and contribute to our beloved university, where our worth is defined by our achievements and compassion.

Let's celebrate the diverse definitions of womanhood and create a brighter way for a future where every woman can shine.

๐—œ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ: As a civil engineering student, I always get questioned about my choice in a field perceived as male-dominated. "Why choose a field dominated by men?" It's not just a casual question; it feels like a doubt about what women can achieve. I want to shed light on this issue. We shouldn't live in a world where one gender is better than the other. Let's support each other, regardless of gender.

I am committed to being a role model, challenging stereotypes, and advocating for equal opportunities at Urdaneta City University. We can build a more inclusive and empowered community where everyone feels empowered to pursue their dreams. Letโ€™s live in a world where each individual is recognized for their abilities, not their gender.

In my three-year journey at the university, I've observed elusive barriers hindering women's empowerment. From limited representation to stereotypical expectations, these challenges persist.

As a female role model, I commit to addressing these concerns or issues by promoting inclusivity, fostering mentorship programs, and advocating fair and equal opportunities. I aim to create an environment where every woman feels heard, supported, and empowered to pursue their ambitions.

Let's break down these barriers, shaping a university culture that truly empowers every woman to thrive and lead.

๐—œ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ: In terms of activating and promoting women's empowerment among UCUians, my vision is closely tied to the incredible opportunities that Urdaneta City University has already provided through its events, programs, and activities. The university has set the stage with dedicated spaces for women, and as an Ambassadress, it falls upon me to guide fellow UCUians toward these empowering opportunities.

I actively support every event and [raise] awareness about the challenges faced by my fellow women. I believe in leadership that's more than just words; it's about doing things that make a real difference. Most importantly, I am committed to standing up for what is right and being willing to fight for it, no matter what it takes.

Being Miss Urdaneta City University isn't just a personal win for me; it's about fulfilling my purpose. This journey happened because someone believed in me, and my goal is to offer that same belief and support to my fellow UCUians.

As a proud and grateful ambassadress, my mission is to ignite a flame of empowerment among my fellow students.

I'll organize awareness campaigns encouraging inclusivity and breaking gender stereotypes through workshops and mentoring programs we can hold at our university. For example, [the] Women's Leadership Forum, entitled "EmpowerHER," [focuses] on skills development, resilience, and fostering leadership qualities that celebrate women's achievements. This will aim to establish a platform for open dialogue on gender equality.

Through collaboration and education, we'll break barriers, inspire confidence, and cultivate a community towards progress where every woman at our university has the tools and support to thrive. Let's embark on this journey together, fostering a campus where empowerment knows no bounds.

Despite their differing opinions, Irene and Angela have the same goal for the UCU community: to foster a safe, inclusive atmosphere in which women are heard, accepted, valued, and celebrated. They are truly empowered women who wish to encourage others to do the same. #

UCU BA COMMunity, the page of Bachelor of Arts in Communication, went live with a special radio episode entitled, "BASTA BABAE: Debunking Misconceptions about Women."

The episode featured College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Program Coordinator Mae Calizo, CAS instructors Racquel Ferrer and Jasmine Joy Valeroso, and CAS Gender and Development Coordinator Mary Ruth Datario.

The instructors took turns in answering and debunking commonly held beliefs about women, such as women for being more sensitive to men or how women should stay inside the home.

Instructor Micah Tarlit, the director of the campus radio, said that the theme was inspired by the current trends in vlogging, where vloggers debunk popular myths.

"Those myths [about women] are from certain instructors from the College of Arts and Sciences," shared Tarlit.

"It does not always happen. But, for sure, if we were able to think about these [misconceptions] when asked, then it means there is a truth to it, and there are people who still believe in these [myths]."

At the end of the episode, the online viewers were left with a fill-in-the-blank question: "Basta babae, blank, and why?"

So UCUians, basta babae ___________. Why?

Do you have old and unused books at home?

The Junior Chamber of Business Administration (JCBA) is encouraging UCUians to donate their books to increase the knowledge pool of the Dr. Pedro T. Orata Library.

Top donors will be recognized and given a token of appreciation.

JCBA President Jerald R. Marasigan sees this program beneficial to the school library and the students who frequently visits the establishment.

"It is better if we have a diverse set of books that we can read and help add to our knowledge," said Marasigan.

Likewise, the JCBA welcomes stories and children's books as they will be donated to their extension program in Barangay Labit, Urdaneta City.

To raise student empowerment against sexual harassment, the Character & Values Formation Unit conducted a seminar entitled, โ€œDonโ€™t Cross the Line, Respect Personal Space,โ€ at the University Gymnasium last Thursday.

Guest speaker Atty. Agnes Velasquez-Rivera, National President, Education Industry Triparitite Council of the Philippines expounded two laws: RA 7877 also known as the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995 and RA 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act.

Rivera underscored the types of environment where harassment can occur, namely: the workplace, educational institutions, training settings, and even online.

After the lecture, the lawyer exchanged questions and answers with the seminar participants in an open forum.

The Character & Values Formation Unit under the Center for Student Leadership and Development reaffirmed its steadfast determination on shaping a future free from harassment and discrimination by utilizing the power of education, dialogue, and legal awareness of the students.

The Urdaneta City University's Gender and Development Office, in coordination with the Center for Student Leadership and Development and the Events Management Office, spearheaded the celebration of International Women's Day today.

With the theme "Juana, Ikaw ang Bida!" the celebration welcomed faculty and students to a โ€œKapehan ni Juana,โ€ offering coffee and local bread pandesal at the University Forest.

Prof. Flory C. Beltran, head of GAD, said that the goal of the event is to recognize the contribution and participation of women in society, specifically in the institution.

When asked why they chose to offer free coffee, Beltran responded, "It's a form of bonding in our Forest area and to have time for relaxation because that is also one of the goals of Women's Day. It's a day to relax and celebrate."

Meanwhile, the UCU Student Council also led the poster-making and chalk art competition. The winners are yet to be announced.

Also, the winners of Pasiklaband 2.0, namely: Iustitia Band (CCJE), Didas Kalos (CTE), and Stage Bosses (CBMA), and La Casa De Orata Productions, entertained the crowd with dances and band performances.
