#𝐁𝐅𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐕𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 │ The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources - Central Visayas issues this official statement to address 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 “𝗕𝗮𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗻𝗮” 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝗕𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹.

The deceased animal has been identified as a S***m Whale (𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴) with a total length of 14.40 meters, a girth of 6.0 meters, a 2.6 meters fluke, and 1.23 meters flippers. It was discovered drifting and lifeless in the waters off Banacon Island on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Following a joint investigation conducted on December 17, 2024, by the Provincial Fishery Office – Bohol, the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the local government unit (LGU) of Getafe, it was revealed that the carcass showed significant injuries, particularly in the ventral region. However, these injuries are unlikely to be the cause of death. It is possible that the injuries occurred while the animal was drifting lifeless.

The public is advised to avoid the carcass for safety reasons. Handling or coming into close contact with the remains could pose health risks, as decaying animal carcasses may carry harmful bacteria, parasites, or other pathogens. Additionally, the situation may require further investigation by authorities to determine the cause of death. For public safety, it is best to stay clear of the area until proper protocols are followed.

The BFAR and its partner agencies continue to monitor the situation and will implement necessary measures to ensure the protection of marine wildlife in the area.

A bus carrying young students and their teachers on a school trip caught fire in suburban Bangkok on Tuesday, leaving more than 20 feared dead, officials and rescuers said.

The bus with 45 passengers — six teachers and 39 elementary and junior high school students — was traveling from the central Uthai Thani province when it caught fire in Pathum Thani province, a northern suburb of Thailand’s capital, acting police commissioner Kitrat Phanphet said.

The fire was first reported around noon and was put out less than an hour later, but rescuers said they could not get on board for hours as the heat inside the natural gas-fueled vehicle could have caused more explosions.

Police were still working to identify the dead but three teachers and 20 students remain unaccounted for, Kitrat said.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known. Kitrat said the initial investigation indicates a tire had exploded and caused sparks, which ignited a blaze that spread through the bus. He did not elaborate.
