"Alab ng Pagmamahalan, Tunay na Diwa ng Kapaskuhan"

akda ni Decyrille Rodio (BSED)
December 24, 2024

One Flick of the Light Switch

By Lucie Rexel Lacbayen

Under a flicker of a switch, the season came to a drastic turn, thus the coldness of breath began interfering with the lives of people in Tagum City. Days were quite over, yet the celebration began with a happy tree, brimming with hues of bright colors reflected into the eyes of people. Itโ€™s the Christmas tree thatโ€™s different!

โ€œBut doesnโ€™t everyone also have large trees adorned with Christmas lights? I donโ€™t get the hype lolโ€. Some would argue and say that they would rather be at home and enjoy the convenience of not getting up. But you see, the comfort of being united with people and an igniting heart from those who shared the same sentience as you, is a worthwhile experience.

โ€œHey! Itโ€™s actually you! Been a while now, how have you been?โ€ Coincidence? Definitely not. The huge Christmas tree along with its bright lights serves a symbolic meaning of a gathering for people with open hearts and open arms. Families with their children, couples holding hands, groups of friends capturing scenes together, each of them has bright lights in their eyes that reflect hope and warmth.

โ€œ3!...โ€ The big start of chanting. โ€œ2!...โ€ The second notion of peopleโ€™s voices. โ€œ1!โ€ and with a Flicker of a switch, light engulfed the City Hall of Tagum. The crowd erupted with chants and cheers. For many, it was the reminder of unity, the memory of togetherness under a cold, harsh weather. Then suddenly, you began to realize and see that there indeed was magic in Christmas lights, just one flick of the light switch.

Emblem of a Milestone

By Jeston Russel Barcenas

The sonorous blare of the marching song fills the air and every inch of me trembles not from the nervousness but from the utmost elation. I never thought Iโ€™d be up here.

It all started with a tiny dream, a seedling underneath the begriming soil of hardships, and then it rose into a bud of uncertainty, and then into a full-fledged blooming gallimaufry of resplendent success and a series of prickly spikes of tribulations. But like a young plant, Iโ€™m still growing. I havenโ€™t reached the summit yet. I havenโ€™t produced the fruit of my labors yet. But to be here, is taking one of those steps.

I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m in my first pinning ceremony. I stand beside the one that I loveโ€”my guardianโ€”as we meld into the queueing crowd. Iโ€™m in my one-of-a-kind fourth year uniform and so are my classmates. This is our day, and no one can take it away from us.

In a moment of pure, unfettered silence, I thought to myself, this wouldnโ€™t happen without all the sleepless nights, all the vibrant mornings, all the wrong decisions, all the right choices, all the incorrect answers, all the appropriate solutions, all the meticulous placings, all the awry of lashings, all the raindrops that drench, all the sunrays that dry, all of the friends that I laughed with, all of the enemies that tried my bandwidth. All the doubt and the guilt, all the projects that I built, all the deadlines I beat to death, all of the versions of my self I had to kill and bring back to life, all of them brought me here on this momentous day.

I couldnโ€™t be more grateful, you see, all the things that happened to me were mere twigs, a continuous supply of fuel, to bring forth and keep the fire in me.

As the master of ceremony calls my name, I stand up with the one that I love, marching through the aisle as our hands tangle in a tight braid. Each tap of my shoes on the ground says I made it, but Iโ€™m not there yet. Iโ€™ve come so far, but the destination is still a distance between the earth and a star.

The pinโ€”an emblem of a milestoneโ€”latches onto the fabric of my shirt as Iโ€™m standing before anyone, smiling, swimming in this magical feeling, and screaming a soundless cry: I AM READY.

Led by Police Staff Sergeant Kerrneil R. Catalino, the seminar offered valuable insights and practical advice on staying safe on campus and in the wider community.

Sergeant Catalino began by clearly defining crime and a discussion of various types of crimes commonly encountered on college campuses and in the wider community. He then detailed specific laws relevant to these crimes, outlining the legal recourse available to victims and the potential penalties for offenders. This section provided attendees with a better understanding of their rights and the legal processes involved in reporting and addressing criminal activity.

The seminar wasn't just a lecture; it was an interactive experience. Sergeant Catalino also explained the justice system and emphasized the importance of reporting incidents to the proper authorities.

The seminar concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing participants to clarify any doubts and gain further insights. The overall response was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees expressing increased awareness and confidence in their ability to contribute to a safer campus environment.

Did you know that the crown given to Ms. Universe 2024 Victoria Kjรฆr Theilvig of Denmark is Filipino-made? The Lumiรจre de l'Infini (The Light of Infinity) was proudly made by Jewelmer, an international brand.

The crown showcases the Philippines' South Sea Pearl, the national gemstone, embellished with diamonds in patterns that resemble ocean waves. At the center, the lone golden pearl serves as the crown's piรจce de rรฉsistance, to which it depicts the sun where a myriad of diamond-adorned rays emanates.

This beautiful crown is a testament to the global artistry of Filipino jewelers.

On October 23, 2024, Aces Tagum College, Inc. hosted the Mental Health Awareness Symposium themed ๐™ˆ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ฉ๐™ ๐™๐™ฃ๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™ช๐™œ๐™œ๐™š๐™™: ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ก ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™จ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™‹๐™–๐™ฉ๐™๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฎ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™’๐™š๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ๐™จ, bringing students together for a day of support and self-discovery. The Guest Speaker was Ms. Eversweet R. Santos, a mental health advocate, who led two sessions tailored to College students who attended in the morning, while the Senior High School (SHS) students joined in the afternoon.

Ms. Santos emphasized the importance of recognizing mental health signs and practicing self-care. Be proactive and prioritize yourself.

โ€œListeners should keep in mind the advice given by the speaker, especially if they have mental health issues,โ€ shared Christine Cozares, a second-year BSED student. โ€œThe symposium serves as an opportunity for them to realize their worth, engage in self-care, and prioritize their mental health. It also helps others see that mental health issues are not a joke and educates them on this important topic.โ€

Rea Depalubos, a second-year BEED student, added, โ€œDepression can greatly affect students, leading to low energy, difficulty concentrating, and loss of motivation. Raising awareness encourages early support, reduces stigma, and helps students manage symptoms, improving both their mental health and academic success.โ€

The symposium successfully fostered a supportive environment for students, reinforcing the message that mental health is vital to their overall well-being.

Together, let's create a culture of support and understanding around mental health. Start by checking in with yourself and those around you.

Daytime in the Graveyard

Hushed and noiseless. Buried 6 feet under the ground resides those that were once heroes. Each having their own remarkable stories that were engraved but nevertheless unseen by passerby people. As most would assume, more than hundreds of these stones remain unnoticed. But then the clock starts ticking, and baam! Itโ€™s already November 2.

What has changed? People begin making preparations and the once still and quiet place becomes noisy and rowdy. โ€œSister! Would you care to buy some candles?โ€ โ€œMister! Pick the color of your candle! Green creates prosperity!โ€. Hundreds of people gather with so many things to do.

The once cold stones have now begun to embrace the warm ambience of each candle light. Foods are being brought out, placed in tables, and rosary necklaces are being used. From morning up until night, the place has remained full. Is it noisy and uproarious for all those souls? Most probably not.

In contrast to other dates in the calendar, November 2 has had been the brightest for the graveyard. Itโ€™s the thing that sets it apart from all those dates. Schedules have kept on being hectic as the time goes by but regardless, people would still find ways in keeping their loved ones in check.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6โ€ฆ and it could go on until forever. How long must their cold body remain lying down in those coffins? But one thing is for sure, their souls had long soared high alongside the prayers that were bestowed upon them. Hands are clasped together, warm hands are holding up each other, and candles are being lit. November 2 was daytime in the graveyard.

Jewel Beyond Compare

By Jeston Russel Barcenas
October 26, 2024

I stride into the gymnasium with the fuel of agitation running through my veins accompanied by the intensified heat of the sun reflecting on each surface: the floor, my skin, the transparent lenses of my eyeglasses, they are welcoming us, as if with a giant warm embrace. My head couldnโ€™t wrap the attention around. โ€œReally, this is all for us?โ€ I muse as the eyes focus on us like spotlights, let alone the cheers that reverberate back and forth to each corner of the gym.

I, for one, know, this is a grand whale of a time. Why? Because itโ€™s 4th of October, World Teacherโ€™s Day. A day of wondrous celebration. And on top of all, I happen to be a teacher of Aces Tagum College. The sole reason I walk into the scene of jovial revelry.

But there is this lingering feeling despite the excitement. Nobody knows what is going to happen. My brain freezes. It has not a smidge of an idea. Besides, what happens to me if I donโ€™t receive a single surprise from one of my students, let alone a gift or a flower? I might sit here throughout the duration all awkward, wallowing in heartrending embarrassment.

I sit on one of the chairs with my name plastered on the splat of the monobloc in the middle of the gym. Still, the butterflies in my stomach flutter their wings ceaselessly, as if theyโ€™re making a tornado in my guts.

Until, in a deafening spontaneity after several song choruses have been sung, one of my students, stands before the podium and utters the words of gratitude aimed at me: โ€œThank you for teaching us, youโ€™ve shown us the amazing wonders of learning and how it can help us to be better,โ€ and my heart melts in a way I am not expecting that I may as well be levitating away from my chair and into the air. Tears slightly well up in my eyes, my chest tightens, and a genuine smile reshapes my lips. I never realized my teachings have an effect on anybody until now, which takes me by surprise. And with the wonderful words thrown around comes the buoyant, mystical feeling that replaces the lingering worries in no time. And for that I am endlessly grateful.

The event moves along like a whirlwind romance where we get to play childlike games and dance like no one is watching and win prizes as if we are on a television show; we then receive surprises from our students. I receive a handful of roses and a couple of sweet treats. It is truly one for the books and one I will cherish forever.

But then when I sit back on my chair, an epiphany hits me like a lightning bolt. Itโ€™s clear to me now that the real surprise there arenโ€™t the gifts or the flowers or the chocolates or the teddy bears, itโ€™s more personal and introspective, one that is abstract and cannot be seen, but only felt by the heart. Itโ€™s the feeling of pure unbridled joy when someone you hardly know appreciates you and loves you for what you are and for what you do. And that is the kind of surprise that truly matters. Even without the physical gifts, I think, their love would still be enough to lift me up.

As Princess Luciana said in her song, โ€œJoy's not found in things such as necklaces and rings. But in love that's always there. Thatโ€™s the jewel beyond compare.โ€ You may not know her but her words ring true always and forever.
