House Deputy Majority Leader Rep. Erwin Tulfo has admitted being an undocumented worker in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s to provide for his family.

Tulfo addressed allegations of falsifying documents to obtain a US passport in 1991.

“Nagtungo po ako sa Amerika para pakainin ang anak ko. Pag-aralin. That's what I did. That's the only mistake that I did. Nag-TNT po ako. That's true,” Tulfo said.

However, he did not directly respond to the passport falsification allegations.

He recounted working as a dishwasher, bagger, and stockroom staff to support his children.

“Hindi ko po kinakahiya na I was once an undocumented alien, na I was once an illegal OFW dahil wala akong papel. Hindi ko po yan kinahihiya, pero hindi ko po yun pinangangalandakan. Why? Hindi ko po yung kinahihiya because yung pinakain ko po sa mga anak ko, hindi ko po ninakaw, hindi ko po in-scam, wala po akong kaso sa Amerika, wala pong nagkaso sa akin,” he added.

A letter allegedly from the US Embassy in October 2022 surfaced, accusing Tulfo of using a fake birth certificate under the name "Erich Sylvester Tulfo," claiming he was born in Hawaii instead of Tacloban, Leyte.

This is not the first time Tulfo's US citizenship issues have surfaced.

In 2022, similar concerns were raised during his confirmation as Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary, which hindered his appointment.
