As our preparations for Christmas reach their summit, and the joyous celebrations of the Santa Cruz Kislap Holiday Festivities fill our hearts with warmth, we, the I Love Santa Cruz Collective, pause to express our sincere gratitude. We are deeply indebted to our cherished partners and the steadfast leadership of Mayor Marisa Red, who have made these festivities a truly radiant beacon of community spirit.

But amidst the merriment, let us turn our hearts to the quiet miracle of Christmas: the birth of Christ, a moment that reshaped the world, inviting us to embrace the divine light that shines within each of us.

The quarterfinal rounds of the inaugural I Love Santa Cruz Debate Cup were held at the Mayor’s Office last Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the municipality’s efforts to cultivate youth participation in democratic discourse. Organized by the I Love Santa Cruz Collective, this initiative aims to equip young individuals with the critical thinking and communication skills essential for active citizenship.

From a field of competitive teams, four advanced to the semifinals: SCI Team B, Landy National High School Team A, SCI Team A, and Makapuyat National High School Team A. Each demonstrated exceptional analytical ability and a commendable capacity to engage constructively with complex issues.

The Debate Cup reflects Santa Cruz’s broader commitment to fostering leadership and civic awareness among its youth. By providing platforms for structured dialogue, the initiative aligns with global best practices in promoting democratic values and inclusive participation at the community level.

This event would not have been possible without the support of local partners, including Yu Vincent Grocery Products and Trading and Islas Moriones Beach Resort, whose contributions underscore the value of community collaboration in sustaining such initiatives.

Looking ahead, the competition will progress to the semifinal stage on December 18, 2024, at the Santa Cruz Town Plaza. This public event will offer an opportunity for the wider community to witness and support the growth of these young leaders as they navigate the challenges of civic dialogue.

The Debate Cup serves as a model for how local initiatives can address the need for youth engagement in governance and policy-making. By fostering these skills at an early stage, Santa Cruz is setting an example of how small communities can contribute to broader democratic resilience.
