May isang video na naman ang nag-trending kung saan may isang girl na assumingly may tattoo ang bigla na lang sinabihan out-of-nowhere ng mga kapatiran natin na hindi raw siya makakapasok sa langit kasi may tattoo sya. Ang palitan ng mga salita ay naging mainit! Kasing init ng nararamdaman natin ngayong summer. Recently, may nag-trending din na nagpa-tattoo sa noo dahil naniwala raw sa April Fools na pinost online. It turns out marketing strategy lang pala nila yun, so better wag na lang nating pag-usapan.These led us to discuss the issue of having tattoos. Kasalanan ba talaga ‘to? How should Christians deal with this issue?

𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

In order to say that having tattoos is really a sin, one must prove that there is a clear instruction against it and that it is still applicable today. Para sa mga against dito, lagi nilang binabanggit ang Lev 19:28, “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.” Bakit binawal ang mga ito? Sa ancient times, ang paglalagay ng cuts sa sariling body ay associated sa pagan practices kapag nagluluksa. Ang paglalagay din ng tattoo marks ay isang common practice noon para ipakita ang loyalty ng isang tao sa pagan gods na kanyang sinasamba. Also, we have to admit na hindi natin sure kung ang tattoo ba sa passage na ito ay same lang sa tattoo na alam natin today na permanent sa skin. May nagsasabi na maaring tinutukoy ng verse na ito ang pagpipinta ng mga ancient people sa bodies nila, which was obviously nabubura rin naman as part of mourning rituals. But we can be sure that having body cuts for the dead and tattoos were commonly associated with pagan religions. God doesn't want Israelites to follow these customs because these might lead them to imitate the pagan people and become idolatrous as well. “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God. You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices…Do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them.” (Lev 18:2-3, 30). Gusto ni Lord na ang Israel ay hindi maging kagaya nila at maging holy, which means, “separated” sa mga bansang nakapaligid sa kanila (19:2).

𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦

Ngayon na alam na natin kung ano ang sinasabi ng verse, ang tanong, applicable pa ba sa atin ito as Christians? To answer this question, we should take note the following points:

𝟭.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀. Bakit? Kasi hindi naman tayo Israelites. Ang utos ay obvious naman na para lang sa “entire assembly of Israel” (19:2). May kinalaman ito sa sa magiging buhay nila sa Promise Land na titirhan nila. They must not imitate the pagan customs of the people of Canaan. Dahil hindi naman tayo mga Israelites, labas tayo sa covenant (agreement, kasunduan) nila sa Diyos, pati na rin sa sangkaterbang mga utos ng law of Moses na para sa kanila. Ang mga believers ay hindi na under ng law (Rom 6:14) dahil dumating na si Kristo para i-fulfill ang mga ito para atin (Matt 5:17; Rom 10:4; Gal 3:24; etc).

𝟮.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀. Dahil ang buong Bible ay useful (2 Tim 3:16-17), maari pa rin nating i-apply ang verse, ngunit hindi na sa parehong paraan na inutos ito noon. Ang principle sa likod ng utos ay applicable pa rin naman sa atin. The restriction against getting a tattoo has something to do with idolatry. As Christians, we should love the Lord our God totally (Matt 22:37; Mk 12:30; Deut 6:5; etc.). Kahit hindi ka nga magpa-tattoo, kung mas may pinapahalagahan ka namang something or someone na mas higit kay Lord, guilty ka pa rin of violating the command.

𝟯.𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱. For the record, walang passage na nagbabawal dito. Wala rin namang verse ang nag-uutos para gawin natin ito. Jesus or Paul did not even mention anything about having a tattoo. Whether to have a tattoo or not is up to the person to decide. Hindi naman ito serious issue. Kaya mali na sabihin na dahil may tattoo na, di na rin makakapasok sa langit! Hindi ko sure kung saang planeta galing ang belief na yun! Ang basis ng salvation at ng eternal life ay tanging faith in Jesus (Jn 3:16; 6:47; Acts 16:31; etc.), hindi good works (Eph 2:8-9). In short, kung ayaw wag. Wala namang namimilit, kung paanong wala ring nagbabawal.

𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. Though the Bible is basically silent regarding this, it has provided guidelines for us to make an informed decision. In 1 Cor 6:12 sabi ni Paul, “Everything is permissible for me but not everything is beneficial.” Dahil mayroong freedom na si Christian from the law of Moses, pwede nya nang gawin lahat! Hindi ibig sabihin nito na magiging careless na tayo, kasi sabi rin nya na “not everything is beneficial.” Bago ka mag-decide na magpa-tattoo, isipin mo muna kung may benefits ba. Kanya-kanya naman ‘to. For some people, having a tattoo is senseless, but for others, it helps them cope with grief, reminds them of important things, improves their confidence, etc. Kung walang matinong rason, better wag na.

𝟱.𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Sa discussion ni Paul sa kung ano ang pwede at bawal kainin noon, sabi nya na, “So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.” (Rom 14:22-23). Ang principle sa sinabi ni Paul dito ay pwede rin sa usapin kung pwede ba or bawal magpa-tattoo at sa iba pang hindi clear issues sa Bible. Ang decision mo kung mapapa-tattoo ka ba or hindi ay matter of your own conviction. In other words, between yourself and God. Para kay Paul, blessed ka kung hindi ka makokonsensya sa gagawin mo (“Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.”). Pero magkakasala ka kung iniisip mong mali, pero ginawa mo pa rin. You will be condemned not because having a tattoo is a sin, but because you believe that it is a sin yet you chose to still do it. By disobeying your conscience, you are not acting in faith, and “everything that does not come from faith is sin.”

𝟲. 𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲. We are commanded to do everything for the glory of God and glorify God with our bodies ( 1 Cor 6:20; 10:31). The best way para ipakita ang love natin kay Lord ay mahalin natin ang iba (1 Jn 4:20). Kahit may freedom tayong magpa-tattoo o kaya magpakulay ng buhok, magsuot ng gusto natin o magpaputi, we should also consider the people around us. Magiging blessing din kaya ito sa kanila? Ano kayang magiging reaction nila? If the people around you are distressed by what you do, you are not acting in love (Rom 14:15). “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification…It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.” (14:19,21). If there will be no issue for people around you at all, you can go for it! Just make sure the art you’ve chosen to put in your body can also bring glory to God.

Ang iba sa inyo mga kapatid ay maaring may ibang view dito. Okay lang. Majority ng mga kilala kong conservative Christians, firm ang stand against tattoos. As I mentioned earlier, follow your conviction. At dahil wala naman pa lang strong basis na sabihin na mali ito, “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.” (Rom 14:13). Kung hindi naman pala ito seryosong usapin saating mga believers, tigil-tigilan na rin nating atakihin ang mga hindi naman pala Christians sa mga ganitong usapin. To do such a thing is unwise and might not help our efforts to reach them with the gospel. “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Rom 12:18).
