39 YEARS IN THE MAKING 🏆

The University of the East’s (UE) decades-long wait for a basketball title is finally over.

The UE Junior Warriors demolished the UST Tiger Cubs, 78-47, to capture their first crown in 39 years in the do-or-die Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 junior high school basketball tournament finals on Friday, December 20, at the FilOil EcoOil Sports Centre.

With this victory, UE earned its first basketball championship since Season 48, with Allan Caidic and Jerry Codiñera running the show for the Red Warriors in the men's division.

The last time the Junior Warriors reached the promised land was in Season 44, led by the duo of Codiñera and Modesto Hojilla under the mentorship of Gabriel Reyala.

“Finally, after how many years,” Junior Warriors head coach Andrew Estrella said.

“It’s important for the school and the program. As I’ve said before, this would be enough na puntahan kami ng mga players,” he added.

After a hotly-contested affair in the first quarter, Brian Orca Jr. and Ethan Oraa unshackled a 19-point explosion for the Junior Warriors.

The Warrior cagers leaned on Gab Delos Reyes’ defense, limiting the Tiger Cubs’ scoring to just nine points in the second frame, 34-23.

In the second half, the Junior Warriors eventually pulled away against the España-based squad, leading by as big as 33 points, 72-39.

“It’s a perfect game. The boys wanted it. They delivered,” Estrella shared.

“Sa game plan namin, hindi sila bumitaw. In short, they wanted the championship and here it is.”

Oraa topscored for the Recto-based squad with 13 markers and three rebounds on a 5-of-8 shooting, while Enrico Bungar chipped in 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Delos Reyes, who averaged 9.3 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks in the three-game series, was awarded the Finals Most Valuable Player.

The Junior Warriors wrapped up their hard-fought and title-laden campaign with a stellar 16-2 win-loss slate.

WARRIORS ON TOP 🏆

The University of the East (UE) women’s and high school boys’ and girls’ teams ruled the UAAP Season 87 judo tournament after bagging the overall championship at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila, December 14-15.

The Lady Warriors, spearheaded by Leah Jhane Lopez, Mylene Matias, and Jhen Rose Mae Obeja, maintained their grip on the judo throne, successfully attaining their fourth consecutive title.

Lopez, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP), expressed gratitude to her teammates for rising above the challenge in the recently concluded tilt.

“Kahapon po kasi puro rookies ‘yong mga kasama naming lumaro, pero siyempre ngayong second day, most of the seniors na talagang mga kasabayan din po.

“Thankful po ako sa kanila kasi hindi po sila nag-give up […] at ginawa nila ‘yong part nila para makuha namin itong four-peat,” Lopez shared.

Overall, the Lady Judokas nabbed four golds, three silvers, and three bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the high school boys’ and girls’ squads achieved a new feat after securing the first-ever golden double.

The boys’ team earned its first-ever championship with 36 points, while the girls’ squad completed their back-to-back title run with 45 points.

“Aminado naman ako na ‘yung training namin medyo challenging talaga. Kumbaga tinaas namin ‘yong level ng training ng varsity,” Rodriguez said.

“Sinabi ko sa kanila ang target namin, hindi lang UAAP, kung ‘di international ‘yong target natin. Kaya karamihan sa kanila part ng national team,” he added.

Chezter Caminong and Jhenica Serrano received the MVP honors in the high school boys’ and girls’ divisions, respectively.

Serrano and Dean Ordoño were hailed as Rookies of the Year this season.

‘DISPROPORTIONATELY HARSH AND EXCESSIVELY PUNITIVE’

The University Student Council (USC) has urged the administration to waive the five-percent surcharge for late payment of tuition and other school fees.

The USC bared that many students expressed stress and disappointment over the surcharge imposed on their remaining tuition balance.

In a letter sent to UE President Zosimo Battad, the student council stressed that the five-percent surcharge “disproportionately impacts financially vulnerable students” and creates additional barriers to accessing affordable yet quality education.

“In light of the economic challenges currently faced by many students and their families, coupled with the fact that the previous tuition increases were 9.5% and 6% in the past two years, the imposition of such a fee is excessively burdensome and unfair to those already struggling to meet their financial obligations,” the letter read.

The Manila-based council underscored that the December 5 deadline for the students paying in installment makes it difficult for families relying on monthly income to settle payments, as most paydays occur on the 10th or 15th of the month.

“We believe that extending understanding and empathy to students in this situation reflects the core values of our university and strengthens the support for the
academic success of each Mandirigma,” the USC said.

“While we understand the importance of timely payments, the 5% surcharge seems excessively punitive. A more reasonable and compassionate adjustment to this policy would alleviate unnecessary stress and help students balance their academic and financial responsibilities,” the student council added.

‘IMPEACH SARA DUTERTE’

University of the East (UE) student-led groups have voiced support to the first-ever impeachment complaint slapped against Vice President Sara Duterte.

UE-Caloocan Central Student Council, UE-Manila College of Business Administration Student Council, and political party Kaisa joined over 100 student groups and individuals in the ongoing call to have Duterte removed from office.

Last Monday, December 2, various sectoral groups filed before the House of Representatives’ Office of the Secretary General the first impeachment rap against Duterte.

The 50-page impeachment complaint was crafted by civil society organizations, religious leaders, sectoral representatives, and families of victims of extrajudicial killings, and endorsed by Akbayan Partylist Representative Percival Cendaña.

The complainants cited culpable violations of the Constitution, graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes as grounds for the incumbent vice president’s impeachment.

The issues raised against Duterte included her failure to properly account for the public funds for the Office of the Vice President and Department of Education, betrayal of public trust by abandoning her duties during a calamity, failure to address Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea, and public threats against top officials, among others.

“Her tenure as both Vice President and Secretary of DepEd has been riddled with gross negligence, inefficiency, and a pattern of misuse of public funds that have compounded and heightened even further the country’s education crisis and undermined public trust in government institutions,” the groups, spearheaded by the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines, stressed.

“The Alliance calls on the Congress of the Philippines to conduct a fair, transparent, and expeditious investigation into the allegations against Vice President Duterte. She must answer to the Filipino youth whose lives and futures have been adversely affected by her decisions,” they added.

Another impeachment case against Duterte was filed by progressive groups, led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, earlier today, December 4.

The second complaint was endorsed by Kabataan Partylist Representative Raoul Manuel, Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Arlene Brosas, and ACT Teachers Partylist Representative France Castro.
