“Igniting the Leader Within: What Fuels the Heart for Leadership?”

DILAAB, an annual event hosted by Far Eastern University - Nursing Society, is dedicated to cultivating exceptional and passionate leaders. From its definition: “fire” or “flame”; during this event, Tamaraw student nurses’ inner flame ignited, fueled by the spark in their heart for leadership and their burning passion in serving the people. For the 6th year of DILAAB, which was themed “Fueling the Leadership Pipeline”, distinguished guest speakers embodying the very essence of leadership—each with a unique and inspiring journey—were invited to share their invaluable insights, meaningful experiences, and profound wisdom with the nursing community.

“A Compassionate Leader”

Mr. Adrian Dela Cruz, a renowned nursing leader, emphasizes the need to become
compassionate, empathetic, and a responsible leader towards their subordinates that can help improve relationships in the workplace and spark hope and inspiration within the team. He focused on the importance of building connections with members by getting to know them better, hence creating an opportunity to have a deeper sense of camaraderie between the group. This helps them be more encouraged that later on leads to an improvement in their skills.

Furthermore, Mr. Dela Cruz also emphasized knowing where to stand as leaders. When a member receives an accomplishment, leaders should stand behind, which also shows as a sign of support. However, when difficulties arrive, he elaborated that leaders should stand in front and become responsible by solving the problem at hand. These also indicate that leaders should also know when to take charge especially in most critical moments, making them role models in which their members can look up to.

He also stated that “Learn and get much experience as soon as possible so when the time comes when you become a leader, you can pass something to your members,” which helps us prepare in becoming the next generation nursing leaders that leads with utmost compassion and dedication. These characteristics will never fail to become one of the pillars in becoming an empathetic manager.

As Mr. Dela Cruz ended his speech. We learned that in order for us to efficiently lead our members, we should also take the time and effort to connect with them better. Through this, not only does our compassion reflect in our leadership, but it can also be seen in how we treat our patients. Together, we can build a compassionate community that takes care of one another all
while striving to become better.

“Leading with Light and Hope”

Mr. Bryan Soria, a registered nurse and the former president of the FEU Drug Prevention Core, described “Bituing Marikit” as a symbol of light, beauty, and radiance. But to him, it is a beacon of hope, reminding us to seek life in everything we do. His story showed resiliency and emphasized the importance of believing that every person has the capacity to shine.

He was raised by his father who was a drug addict. “This is the kind of story that was not easy to talk about.” Mr. Soria admits. Despite his life challenges, he chose to be a light to others. His courage to share and to advocate his story has inspired those around him to confront their own battles as well.

Moreover, Mr. Soria’s experience became his driving force and led him in becoming a great and reliable student leader. Guided by his advocacy, he created projects deeply rooted in his passion and values. Like stars forming constellations, he brought together a community that empowers resiliency and fosters growth.
He is a “Bituing Marikit” in the lives of many. Even if his own life is dimming, he shone brightly, guiding others through life’s challenges. “We always look light in every story, even if it is the tiniest glimpse of hope,” he added. Mr. Soria inspired us to embrace our inner light and extend its warmth to those in need.

As he concluded his speech, he left us with a profound reminder: “Be a Bituing Marikit for other’s life, or someone's life. And together we can form a constellation of hope for the lives of others.”

“Purpose-Driven Leadership”

Ms. Jeanne Isabelle Bilasano, a speech language pathologist and a beauty queen, talked about one’s purpose. She expounded upon the idea that everyone is here for a reason, and as a healthcare professional, she stated: “We are in this profession because we want to help people”.

She further conveyed: “My role will not be limited to what is expected of me,” the reason behind her strong commitment in her work for both healthcare and pageantry. With this, she uses her platform to raise awareness and to advocate for important social causes, particularly in healthcare.

Additionally, she shared that her main purpose for participating in Miss World Philippines is to get people listen to her advocacy, as having more people becoming involved and joining the conversation can significantly make a big difference. This is because she believes that every individual has the chance to talk about something great, which can be transformational for others.

With this, Ms. Bilasano said that it’s really important to stay committed and rooted to the society, as it is also from other people’s stories that we can learn so much from; and she added, “You’re not here just for yourself, but also for other people”.
Her advocacy, along with her heart in serving the community extends beyond what a healthcare professional is presumed to be; indeed, a “Beauty with a Purpose”—inspiring others to pursue their passion and create a difference in the world. As she concluded her talk, she left a message for Tamaraw nursing student leaders: “At the end of this, I hope we realize that our purpose is what drives us as good leaders”.

_______________________________________________

As the event ended, the plenary talks ignited a fire in every student leaders’ hearts that will push them to become a compassionate leader, a symbol of hope, and the one who always reaches out and extends a helping hand to the community. From the first speaker down to the last one, the guest speakers successfully shed light on the three aspects that every leader should have. As Mr. Dela Cruz put importance on how leaders should know how to connect with their peers, nurturing a caring relationship between the team, this also reflects Mr. Soria’s message in his
speech. By being open and compassionate to members, one can easily become a beacon of hope and light that will encourage others to strive more. And as they aim for professionalism and success, they will now have the chance to reach out and give back to the community just as Ms. Bilasano emphasized, stating that one’s purpose is what makes a good leader.

DILAAB 2024 has sparked its advocacy, reaching every nursing student at FEU. Through the inspiring and transformative stories shared by the three guest speakers, student leaders were given an opportunity to take a pause, to reflect on their purpose, and to ignite their sense of passion for leadership.

The event conveyed that leadership is not just about fulfilling our responsibilities to others—it is about finding a deeper purpose and understanding that we can be a hope and light to others. True leadership is using our voice to uplift others and to demand for a positive change that will benefit each and everyone.

A Brand-New Year

The clock strikes twelve, thus we shall rejoice,
Another year recalls those childhood joys.
Echoes of laughter and bursts of fireworks fill the sky,
Oh, how I miss those priceless moments gone by.

The cold breeze of air wraps the world in embrace,
To which we feel so much love and grace.
Amidst the chaos, we’ve survived the past year,
There’s still hope for a brand-new year to cheer.

May hope ignite, may kindness spread,
For it will lead us to better years ahead.
May this year bring bliss and gratification,
For it is a season of growth, love, and celebration.

“Pasadong grades”

“Kumpletong tulog”

“Bagong cellphone”

“Peace of mind”

𝐅𝐄𝐔𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭: 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝

The 70th Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony of the Department of Nursing was held on October 19, 2024, at the Main Auditorium of Far Eastern University - Manila. During the celebration, which was themed “Fearless, Empowered, and Undaunted: Towards Ethical Healthcare in the Face of Globally Competitive Nursing Standards”, 1,035 student nurses were officially capped and pinned.

In line with this year’s theme, the ceremonial Nightingale and some members of Batch 2027 shared their insights and perceptions on the key characteristics necessary to be embodied by Tamaraw student nurses and registered nurses as they journey towards becoming globally competitive professionals.

𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬

Similar to almost every aspect of our lives, in nursing, everything is also uncertain. We don’t know what the future holds, and the unknown, carrying potential unexpected twists and turns, can be a source of anxiety and fear.

This holds true for Miss Nathalie Rebucan, the ceremonial Florence Nightingale and one of the Top 8 during the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination 2024. In spite of where she is and what she has accomplished, Rebucan admitted that she is still afraid.

“Until now, even when I'm already here, I am still afraid that future plans might not go how I expected them to be. Worry is always there,” she said.

However, Rebucan added: “But that’s part of it. Mild worrying is what keeps us going.”

Amidst uncertainties, her constant reminder to herself that someday she’ll get there helped Rebucan in getting where she wanted to be and achieving what she wanted to become.

Even the student nurses from Batch 2027 view nursing as a profession filled with challenges and uncertainties. But these obstacles don’t hinder them from doing what they are passionate about; rather, they cultivate their sense of fearlessness in the nursing profession.

“Sa nursing, hindi mo talaga alam kung anong kahaharapin mo—haharapin mong cases, haharapin mong mga tao. Fearlessness ay iyong kakayahan mong i-take lahat ng initiative as a student nurse para makapagbigay ng care for the community, for the society,” Erik Emmanuel Pamplona shared, adding that, “It’s like a reminder and a motivation for our batch, to uphold and bring ourselves ready to give service to the community.”

Another student nurse from Batch 2027, Ayeshka Kenzie Galarpe, shared: “In honing our skills and knowledge in nursing, even if there are challenges, if ever we stumble upon obstacles and difficulties, fearlessness means that we have the heart and courage to overcome it no matter what.”

𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝

Nurses are often the first and last point of contact for patients, making them more than just providers of care but also patient advocates—protecting their rights and safeguarding their well-being.

The way nurses interact with their clients makes a significant impact on individuals under their care. Building rapport and a sense of trust from patients are some of the moments in which nurses feel empowered, as their contributions are heard and recognized.

“I really felt empowered every time patients ask for my opinion on their case. It feels like they trust, and they feel cared for by you,” Rebucan said.

The stance is similar to Pamplona, as they are being prepared for their clinical rotations, “drafting nursing diagnoses and nursing care plans.” He shared that they felt empowered and heard as student nurses in using their learnings to provide care for patients.

Aside from being empowered through taking part in providing direct care to patients, student nurses from Batch 2027 shared their moments of empowerment as they navigate the path of being Tamaraw student nurses.

“From the start, when I took my step here in FEU, as an FEU student, as a Tamaraw nursing student, I already felt empowered,” Ullysis Alburo stated. He also said that having the opportunity to study in FEU strengthened him, and through this strength, he was able to strengthen others.

“I also shared my knowledge with others, and my experiences with others—with my co-student nurses here,” Alburo added.

Additionally, the moment when another member of Batch 2027, Loise Janine Rocha, felt empowered was during the time when their workloads as nursing students became “overwhelming and tiring.” "But still, at the end of the day, you do it because it is your passion, and at the same time, your responsibility,” she added in Filipino during the interview.

Far Eastern University is well-known in the Philippines for its undergraduate programs, particularly the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It is consistently ranked among the top nursing schools in the country, and its graduates are highly regarded by employers and healthcare institutions. The nursing program offers a curriculum that rigorously and comprehensively prepares students for a successful career in the nursing field, producing empowered and globally competitive Tamaraw nurses.

𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝

Obstacles and turmoil are part of one’s journey, but undaunted, in the face of adversity, nurses remain steadfast in their commitment to providing quality patient care.

Having the heart to serve and provide care for the people ignites the burning passion in every Tamaraw student and registered nurse. It is evident, considering the reality of nursing here in the Philippines, particularly during circumstances in which they are faced with challenges and setbacks, yet they still choose to do their duty—to provide care and service to people.

“We are really underappreciated,” said Rebucan as she talked about how nurses experience unfair treatment and how nurses are still underpaid in the country.

But despite this, she stated: “You go back to why you took nursing. I chose nursing as my profession because I wanted to care for my patients. I wanted to give them a better quality of life by helping them.”

One of the most important reminders that kept her going whenever she encountered challenges is to look back on her “compassion and the reason she started nursing.”

The same goes for Galarpe as she shared: “I stay committed to what I'm doing by recalling the reason why I started this journey. Upon reflecting on my experiences back then, these honed me to where I am right now; and this motivates and strengthens me to overcome every challenge.”

Even Alburo stated that it is the people, those individuals and groups who need help, particularly those people in the marginalized sector, that motivate him to pursue and continue the nursing profession.

“Iyong mga taong madalas nakakalimutan, iyong mga taong hindi nakakaranas ng equal rights sa healthcare natin, sila iyong nagmo-motivate sa akin to be a nurse, to be a Florence Nightingale,” he said.

Alburo also added that similar to Nightingale, “who became light and hope for everyone,” he also wants to be like her—“a symbol of hope especially for the Filipino people who need help.”

Parents and families are also one of the reasons why student nurses from Batch 2027 remain undaunted. Their loved ones’ sacrifices and encouragement became the source of strength and motivation needed to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

“Iniisip ko rin iyong family ko, gusto kong i-give back lahat ng sacrifices nila,” Precious Gem Anilao, another nursing student from Batch 2027, articulated.

She also added that she is an “empathetic and compassionate person,” which pushes her to continue in order to provide healing to people, especially those who are in need and those with no opportunities in healthcare.

“Iyong parents ko po talaga ang main motivation ko. Gusto ko pong mabigay sa kanila iyong life na deserve nila at mabalik lahat ng sacrifices nila,” Rocha said.

She further conveyed: “Aside from them, I really want to help other people,” particularly those individuals with no ability to provide care for themselves. Rocha expressed her desire to provide these people the care that they deserve.

Also, Pamplona stated that aside from his love for the nursing profession and his passion for serving the people in the community, his family has always been the reason why he took nursing.

---

With the rapid advancements in healthcare, dilemmas surrounding ethico-moral standards, and the significant increase in chronic diseases, there will be a continuously growing demand for globally competitive and qualified Filipino nurses who will embody fearlessness, have a sense of empowerment, and stay undaunted.

With this being said, Rebucan left a message for student nurses who will soon become licensed professionals and part of the nursing workforce in the country:

“To student nurses, soon-to-be future nurses, stay open to new experiences—these experiences will humble you. Still, be able to learn from that experience, even if it's challenging; take it as an advantage, take it as something you can use in the future. Always take care of yourself, because you have been learning to take care of others, so don't forget to take care of yourself.”
