The 70th Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony of the Department of Nursing was held on October 19, 2024, at the Main Auditorium of Far Eastern University - Manila. During the celebration, which was themed โ€œFearless, Empowered, and Undaunted: Towards Ethical Healthcare in the Face of Globally Competitive Nursing Standardsโ€, 1,035 student nurses were officially capped and pinned.

In line with this yearโ€™s theme, the ceremonial Nightingale and some members of Batch 2027 shared their insights and perceptions on the key characteristics necessary to be embodied by Tamaraw student nurses and registered nurses as they journey towards becoming globally competitive professionals.

๐…๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ

Similar to almost every aspect of our lives, in nursing, everything is also uncertain. We donโ€™t know what the future holds, and the unknown, carrying potential unexpected twists and turns, can be a source of anxiety and fear.

This holds true for Miss Nathalie Rebucan, the ceremonial Florence Nightingale and one of the Top 8 during the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination 2024. In spite of where she is and what she has accomplished, Rebucan admitted that she is still afraid.

โ€œUntil now, even when I'm already here, I am still afraid that future plans might not go how I expected them to be. Worry is always there,โ€ she said.

However, Rebucan added: โ€œBut thatโ€™s part of it. Mild worrying is what keeps us going.โ€

Amidst uncertainties, her constant reminder to herself that someday sheโ€™ll get there helped Rebucan in getting where she wanted to be and achieving what she wanted to become.

Even the student nurses from Batch 2027 view nursing as a profession filled with challenges and uncertainties. But these obstacles donโ€™t hinder them from doing what they are passionate about; rather, they cultivate their sense of fearlessness in the nursing profession.

โ€œSa nursing, hindi mo talaga alam kung anong kahaharapin moโ€”haharapin mong cases, haharapin mong mga tao. Fearlessness ay iyong kakayahan mong i-take lahat ng initiative as a student nurse para makapagbigay ng care for the community, for the society,โ€ Erik Emmanuel Pamplona shared, adding that, โ€œItโ€™s like a reminder and a motivation for our batch, to uphold and bring ourselves ready to give service to the community.โ€

Another student nurse from Batch 2027, Ayeshka Kenzie Galarpe, shared: โ€œIn honing our skills and knowledge in nursing, even if there are challenges, if ever we stumble upon obstacles and difficulties, fearlessness means that we have the heart and courage to overcome it no matter what.โ€

๐„๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐

Nurses are often the first and last point of contact for patients, making them more than just providers of care but also patient advocatesโ€”protecting their rights and safeguarding their well-being.

The way nurses interact with their clients makes a significant impact on individuals under their care. Building rapport and a sense of trust from patients are some of the moments in which nurses feel empowered, as their contributions are heard and recognized.

โ€œI really felt empowered every time patients ask for my opinion on their case. It feels like they trust, and they feel cared for by you,โ€ Rebucan said.

The stance is similar to Pamplona, as they are being prepared for their clinical rotations, โ€œdrafting nursing diagnoses and nursing care plans.โ€ He shared that they felt empowered and heard as student nurses in using their learnings to provide care for patients.

Aside from being empowered through taking part in providing direct care to patients, student nurses from Batch 2027 shared their moments of empowerment as they navigate the path of being Tamaraw student nurses.

โ€œFrom the start, when I took my step here in FEU, as an FEU student, as a Tamaraw nursing student, I already felt empowered,โ€ Ullysis Alburo stated. He also said that having the opportunity to study in FEU strengthened him, and through this strength, he was able to strengthen others.

โ€œI also shared my knowledge with others, and my experiences with othersโ€”with my co-student nurses here,โ€ Alburo added.

Additionally, the moment when another member of Batch 2027, Loise Janine Rocha, felt empowered was during the time when their workloads as nursing students became โ€œoverwhelming and tiring.โ€ "But still, at the end of the day, you do it because it is your passion, and at the same time, your responsibility,โ€ she added in Filipino during the interview.

Far Eastern University is well-known in the Philippines for its undergraduate programs, particularly the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It is consistently ranked among the top nursing schools in the country, and its graduates are highly regarded by employers and healthcare institutions. The nursing program offers a curriculum that rigorously and comprehensively prepares students for a successful career in the nursing field, producing empowered and globally competitive Tamaraw nurses.

๐”๐ง๐๐š๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐

Obstacles and turmoil are part of oneโ€™s journey, but undaunted, in the face of adversity, nurses remain steadfast in their commitment to providing quality patient care.

Having the heart to serve and provide care for the people ignites the burning passion in every Tamaraw student and registered nurse. It is evident, considering the reality of nursing here in the Philippines, particularly during circumstances in which they are faced with challenges and setbacks, yet they still choose to do their dutyโ€”to provide care and service to people.

โ€œWe are really underappreciated,โ€ said Rebucan as she talked about how nurses experience unfair treatment and how nurses are still underpaid in the country.

But despite this, she stated: โ€œYou go back to why you took nursing. I chose nursing as my profession because I wanted to care for my patients. I wanted to give them a better quality of life by helping them.โ€

One of the most important reminders that kept her going whenever she encountered challenges is to look back on her โ€œcompassion and the reason she started nursing.โ€

The same goes for Galarpe as she shared: โ€œI stay committed to what I'm doing by recalling the reason why I started this journey. Upon reflecting on my experiences back then, these honed me to where I am right now; and this motivates and strengthens me to overcome every challenge.โ€

Even Alburo stated that it is the people, those individuals and groups who need help, particularly those people in the marginalized sector, that motivate him to pursue and continue the nursing profession.

โ€œIyong mga taong madalas nakakalimutan, iyong mga taong hindi nakakaranas ng equal rights sa healthcare natin, sila iyong nagmo-motivate sa akin to be a nurse, to be a Florence Nightingale,โ€ he said.

Alburo also added that similar to Nightingale, โ€œwho became light and hope for everyone,โ€ he also wants to be like herโ€”โ€œa symbol of hope especially for the Filipino people who need help.โ€

Parents and families are also one of the reasons why student nurses from Batch 2027 remain undaunted. Their loved onesโ€™ sacrifices and encouragement became the source of strength and motivation needed to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

โ€œIniisip ko rin iyong family ko, gusto kong i-give back lahat ng sacrifices nila,โ€ Precious Gem Anilao, another nursing student from Batch 2027, articulated.

She also added that she is an โ€œempathetic and compassionate person,โ€ which pushes her to continue in order to provide healing to people, especially those who are in need and those with no opportunities in healthcare.

โ€œIyong parents ko po talaga ang main motivation ko. Gusto ko pong mabigay sa kanila iyong life na deserve nila at mabalik lahat ng sacrifices nila,โ€ Rocha said.

She further conveyed: โ€œAside from them, I really want to help other people,โ€ particularly those individuals with no ability to provide care for themselves. Rocha expressed her desire to provide these people the care that they deserve.

Also, Pamplona stated that aside from his love for the nursing profession and his passion for serving the people in the community, his family has always been the reason why he took nursing.

---

With the rapid advancements in healthcare, dilemmas surrounding ethico-moral standards, and the significant increase in chronic diseases, there will be a continuously growing demand for globally competitive and qualified Filipino nurses who will embody fearlessness, have a sense of empowerment, and stay undaunted.

With this being said, Rebucan left a message for student nurses who will soon become licensed professionals and part of the nursing workforce in the country:

โ€œTo student nurses, soon-to-be future nurses, stay open to new experiencesโ€”these experiences will humble you. Still, be able to learn from that experience, even if it's challenging; take it as an advantage, take it as something you can use in the future. Always take care of yourself, because you have been learning to take care of others, so don't forget to take care of yourself.โ€

โ€œStanding here, itโ€™s all so clear, Iโ€™m where Iโ€™m meant to beโ€

Despite their journey being filled with countless challenges and having numerous obstacles, the student nurses of Batch 2027 persevered, fueled by their passion to make a difference in the lives of others. As they stood still in the moment, carrying their lamp that illuminates hope, this serves as a reminder for the dream that has always been engraved in their heartsโ€”this is where they are because this is where theyโ€™re meant to be.

Batch 2027 Receives Official Student Nurse Titles During the 70th Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony

The Department of Nursingโ€™s Batch 2027 was officially capped and pinned during this yearโ€™s 70th Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony, held yesterday, October 19, at the Main Auditorium of Far Eastern University.

A total of 1,035 students participated in the event, which was themed โ€œFearless, Empowered, and Undaunted: Towards Ethical Healthcare in the Face of Globally Competitive Nursing Standards.โ€

The event was conducted in three sessions - morning, noon, and afternoon. The morning session was attended by students from BSN 201-205. The noon session was joined by students from BSN 206-210, while those from BSN 211-214 attended the afternoon session.

The ceremony began with the entrance of colors, signifying the start of the student nursesโ€™ clinical journey, followed by an opening speech by Ms. Pearl Angeline Pertubal, the eventโ€™s master of ceremony.

To formally begin the program, the national anthem was sung, followed by a solemn prayer. Thereafter, Mr. John Anthony Yason, Dean of the Institute of Health Sciences and Nursing (IHSN), delivered the opening remarks, underscoring the value of being undaunted in the face of hardships. He noted, โ€œWhen you keep on doing anything difficult, the next time around, youโ€™ll find it easier. He also reminded the student nurses to rest and reflect in order to motivate themselves as they continue their journey.

This was followed by an inspirational message from the esteemed guest speaker, Mr. Kevin Crispino, a 2012 Nursing Department alumnus currently working with the Department of Health in the Philippines.

Mr. Crispino began his message with the question, โ€œWhy nursing?โ€ In response, he offered comforting reassurance that even if the reason for choosing nursing is unclear now, thatโ€™s okay - purpose is something that may be discovered along the way. He recounted his story that unveiled his purpose as a nurse, leaving a memorable impression by stating, โ€œThey say people come and go, but at FEU, people come and grow.โ€

Following Mr. Crispinoโ€™s message, he was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Ms. Moira Uy, Dean of Nursing, and Mr. Jonathan Caรฑares, Department Chair of Nursing for Undergraduate Studies. The most anticipated part of the ceremony - capping and pinning - then commences, as students lined up to receive their caps and pins with smiles on their faces.

Next was the extolling of Florence Nightingale, led by Ms. Nathalie O. Rebucan, an FEU alumna who placed eighth in the 2023 Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam, as the ceremonial nightingale.

The lighting of the lamps followed, symbolizing a guiding light in times of difficulty and challenge. The auditorium gradually brightened with lights as candlelight was passed from one student to another. The batch song, โ€œSee the Lightโ€ by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, played in the background, making the moment memorable. Once the auditorium was fully illuminated, the group Key of N performed the batch song live for the students, clinical instructors, companions, and staff. After the performance, Ms. Rebucann led the Florence Nightingale Pledge, honoring the commitment and responsibility placed upon the newly capped and pinned Tamaraw student nurses.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Ms. Moira Uy. She emphasized the true purpose of the ceremony, stating, โ€œThe cap and pin remind us that nursing is born of service and selflessness.โ€ She reminded the student nurses that this ceremony represents an extraordinary responsibility that must be upheld in practice. The event officially ended with a photo opportunity for each section. | via Ayeshka Kenzie Galarpe and Iannah Mae Gumangi

Dear diary,

In just a few hours, I'm finally getting that โ€˜SNโ€™ added to my name.

As I sit here, with a lamp in hand and a knot in my stomach, I can't help but to feel a whirlwind of emotions. My heart is beating so fast out of excitement and nervousness. Who would've believed that I'd be moments away from being capped and getting this candle lighted? Who would've thought that I'd survive and make it through my first two years of being a nursing student?

Looking back on the rollercoaster ride that has brought me to this moment, I would say that it is indeed a journey of uncertainties and sacrifices. Those sleepless nights fueled by coffee while memorizing every bone in the body, learning all nursing theorists, trying to understand biochemistry, and making all those nursing care plans and drug studiesโ€”it was like drowning in a sea of information, an endless wave of workloads.

And even now, I can still vividly recall how my hands trembled during my first return demonstration, how I pulled an all-nighter just to study for an exam that I ended up failing anyway, or even how I struggled in preparing for our first case presentation. It was all a struggle, and back then, I wondered if I was made for this.

โ€œPara sa akin nga ba talaga ang Nursing?โ€ An unusual thought came to my mind, which is weird; because even before then, I was so sure that this is my dream, that this is my goal. How come I questioned it now? Why did I suddenly become unsure?

Every failed test that I worked so hard for left a mark in my mind, and even an ache to my heart. โ€œHindi naman ako ganito dati.โ€ I kept saying this to myself. And I donโ€™t have any other choice but to move on and continue, because there are still a lot of tasks and assessments waiting for me, listed on my to-do.

It was never an easy journey. It was a rough road that we had to endure, full of bumps and shakiness. But the happiness that we get to feel all throughout the process, especially during moments filled with learnings and experiences, outweighs the challenges and struggles weโ€™ve been through.

Those laughters shared with other student nurses amidst being scared to take tests tomorrow, the exchange of medical jokes that now make sense because we can finally relate to it, and the endless chatter instead of actually reviewing just so we can ease the tension. The proud look plastered on my parentโ€™s face the first time they see me wearing my white uniform, and the never-ending blood pressure checking with my relatives during family gatherings. It was these little moments that made everything bearable, and this dream worth pursuing.

And here I am, as I sit here waiting patiently before I walk on the stage, with a lamp on my hand and a smile on my face, I canโ€™t help but get nervous yet excited as the most awaited ceremony for us, nursing students, finally begins. At last, we will be capped and pinned. We will now hold the lamp that signifies excellence and ignites the spark of hope.

We will finally have that โ€˜SNโ€™ added to our names.
