What is your mother mountain?
Ano nga bundok ang imo una nasaka?

My love for mountaineering took root in my home island of Romblon. I live being surrounded by rolling hills, rice fields, seas and seeing the intimidating peaks of Mount Guiting Guiting and Mount Payaopao at the distance is part of my daily life.

I started on a journey of exploration at a young age with Boy Scouting activities back in elementary and high school days that led me to conquer my first mountain, Mount Lagting's summit via the Ilauran Trail - the highest point in Romblon island with elevation of 444 meters above sea level.

Climbing Mt. Lagting, we spent hours navigating through an undisturbed trail filled with cogon grass and overgrown ferns. My legs were filled with scrapes and bruises which I wrapped around my neckerchief to protect from more scapes.

When we reached the summit, it was windy and foggy. When the fog had disappeared, the intimidating Mt. Guiting Guiting shown from the distance.

Gazing up at Mount Guiting Guiting, I knew that one day, I would stand atop its majestic peak. And so, my mountaineering journey and love for the outdoor began, fueled by the love and inspiration of my home island.

No matter how bad it gets, better days are waiting, hoping you’ll make it there to accept the smiles and joy they are offering.

How to get there?

From Romblon Town, hop on a tricycle or motorcycle going to Bonbon Beach in Lonos, Romblon.

There are two entrances in Bonbon Beach - Municipal entrance (Sitio Tagaytay side) and Owner's Entrance (with Gate).

There's a fee to enter Bonbon Beach, and the cost varies depending on the entrance point. The municipal entrance is less expensive.

The letters "F," "R," and "M" in the surnames of the people of Romblon have a history that spans over one hundred years from the Spanish period.

On November 21, 1849, Spanish Captain and Governor General Narciso Clavería y Zaldúa issued a decree mandating that all Filipinos should choose a surname. The adoption of new surnames was necessary for the efficient implementation of census and taxation processes, as well as to monitor unusual or unauthorized migration throughout the Philippines. The decree was accompanied by a 141-page book called the "𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗼𝘀" (Alphabetical Catalogue of Surnames), which was used to distribute surnames based on geographical locations.

The Catálogo alfabético de apellidos (English: Alphabetical Catalog of Surnames) is a book of surnames that was published in colonial-era Philippines after a decree for the systematic distribution of family names and the implementation of the Spanish naming system.

Per the decree, a copy of the catalog was mandated to be circulated to the provincial leaders throughout the archipelago. A specific number of surnames, based on the population, were sent to the parish priests of each barangay. Subsequently, the leaders of each barangay, along with other town officials, oversaw the process as the head of each family or the eldest member selected a surname. Several groups were also exempted from having to choose new surnames.

Sibuyan natives received most surnames starting with "R." Surnames beginning with "F" are common in Banton, Corcuera, and Concepcion. Friars tore pages with "F" surnames from the "Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos" and posted them on church doors, forcing natives of Banton, Corcuera, and Concepcion to adopt them. The letter "M" surname was dedicated to the people of the Romblon and Badajoz (now San Agustin).

Where is Calatrava located?

Calatrava is located in the Northwest part of Tablas Island, Romblon.

To reach Calatrava, you can take a ferry going to Odiongan, Romblon. From there, hop on a van or hire a tricycle or van to take you to Calatrava.

From Romblon, take a ferry or pump boat going to San Agustin, and hop on a van that will take you to Calatrava.
