Today at 5PM, environmentalist Rodne R. Galicha, 2018 TOYM Philippines: The Outstanding Young Men Awards honoree for climate change and environmental education, makes an appeal to President Bongbong Marcos and other government officials to investigate and halt mining in Sibuyan Island and Romblon province. He speaks on behalf of those who oppose the destructive industry in his island-home of Sibuyan, the Galapagos of Asia and one of the Philippines' last ecological frontier.

Galicha is also executive director of Living Laudato Si' Philippines, national convener of Aksyon Klima Pilipinas, and member of the board of Greenpeace Philippines and Green Convergence Philippines.

Ang pagbubukas ng minahan sa aming magandang kalikasan ay magiging lagusan ng iba pang malalaking minahan. Ang mga hayop, kulisap at mga ibong nananahimik ay mawawalan na rin ng tahanan dahil sa nakaambang panganib na dulot ng pagputol ng libo-libong mga puno at pagkalkal ng lupa’t kabundukan. Ikaw na ang may sabing “.. Lahat tayo ay may pananagutan na pangalagaan ang ating planeta, dahil tayo ay mga tagapag-alaga lamang, at ipapamana natin ang kayamanang ito sa mga susunod na henerasyon... Walang alinlangan na ang pangangalaga sa kapaligiran ay ang pangangalaga ng buhay." Mahal na pangulo, tulad mo, ang nais namin ay buhay - para ngayon at bukas - kasama ang kalikasan. Sa iyo, Senador Sherwin Gatchalian, pumangatlo ka po sa aming lalawigan. Kapatid po ninyo at apelyido po ninyo ang nakataya sa usaping ito. Mas mamahalin namin kayo kung mag-iinvest kayo sa sustainable tourism sa aming isla, nagbebenipisyo ang lahat habang nagbebenepisyo naman ang ating ecosystems. Inday Loren, naging TOYM honoree ka rin po sa broadcast media at ika’y aming environment at climate champion; Senator Win, ikaw naman po ay honoree sa public service; ako naman po ay sa environmental at climate change education - magtulungan po tayo na gawin ang ating mga responsibilidad at tungkulin para sa bayan at kalikasan. Naniniwala po kami na may panahon pa upang iligtas ang aming minamahal na Sibuyan Island. Sa ating House Speaker, naaalala ko po noong bago dumating ang dati kong boss sa The Climate Reality Project na aking pinagsilibihan dito sa bansa mula noong 2009 hanggang 2019, ang dating pangalawang pangulo ng Estados Unidos na si Al Gore, sinabi po ninyo na “Pakinggan natin ang panawagan at gawin ang dapat gawin, kahit sa sarili nating bakuran”. Pumunta po siya sa inyong lalawigan sa Leyte kasama po si Mayor Alfred. Alam po ninyo, kung miminahin ang aming lugar, mas palalalain pa nito ang epekto ng climate change tulad ng malakas na pag-uulan at pagbabaha. Ikaw na po ngayon ang chairperson ng House Committee on Tourism, marami ka pong magagawa para sa isang relient at sustainable na kabuhayan para sa mga Romblomanon nang hindi sinisira ang kalikasan. At sa aming mga lokal na opisyal sa lalawigan hanggang sa mga munisipyo’t barangay, nagsalita na ang karamihan - AYAW NAMIN NG PAGMIMINA - pakinggan ninyo kami. At kayo naman po ay nais ninyong paigtingin ang turismo, lalo na ang ecotourism - papaano magkakaroon nito kung kalbo na ang kabunduka’t kagubatan, madumi na ang mga ilog at maalikabok na ang kapaligiran?. Ang pangulong Bongbong naman ay pinahahalagahan rin ang turismo - accessing nature’s beauty. Patunayan po natin, tumayo po tayo kasama ang mamamayan ng Sibuyan at ng buong Romblon. Amin pong tinatayuan ang sinasabi ng Saligang Batas na ang mga mamamayan ay may karapatan sa isang balanse at nakapagpapalusog na ekolohiya alinsunod sa ritmo at pagkakaisa ng kalikasan. Huwag na po nating hintaying magkaroon ng karahasan at awayin ng mamamayan ang pamahalaaan para lamang ipaglaban ang karapatang ito. Ngunit kami ay handang ipaglaban ang aming isla dahil ang pinili namin ay buhay at kabuhayan na bigay ng malusog at masaganang kalikasan. Mapayapa ang aming pamayanan noong wala pang banta ng minahan, ngunit unti-unti nang pinagkakawatak-watak ng industriyang ito ang aming pagbubuklod, ang sambuligan. May oras pa. As candidates for local elections in the Philippines in 2022 continue to campaign, voters must take an interest with candidates and be informed of plans and programs relevant to their municipalities and constituents.

The Odiongan Local Candidates' Forum aims to assist Odiongan voters in making informed decisions. Organized by the Romblon Observer — in cooperation with Supreme Student Council of Romblon State University, Odiongan Municipal Police Station, Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo (KKDAT), Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), The Harrow "Official School Publication of Romblon State University," and Commission on Election—the forum was held at Odiongan Public Plaza last Saturday, April 9, 6 pm.

Incumbent Mayor Trina Firmalo-Fabic seeking her third term under Liberal Party (LP) also answered a series of questions which came from the different stakeholders in Odiongan.

Among the questions were about political dynasties and accountability and transparency in government infrastructure projects.

Firmalo-Fabic said she is against political dynasties. "Ako po ay sumasang-ayon sa isang batas na nagpapabawal sa political dynasties. Of course, kailangang malinaw ang terms na nakapaloob dito...pero sa puno't dulo niyan dapat ang tinitingnan natin ay ang accomplishments, achievements, [ang mga] plano at plataporma ng bawat kandidato."

"It's not really more of the surname, but more of looking at the meritocracy, the accomplishment and achievement of a particular candidate," she added.

Meanwhile, she also stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in leading the government infrastructure projects.

"Regularly, makikita niyo po pinopost natin ang mga infrastructure projects natin. Nakalagay po ang mga halaga at ibang mga detalye," Firmalo-Fabic said.

She also delved a bit into the need to develop more transparent and accountable government projects.

"We assure you that we really do our committed to good governance and transparency… so there's an assurance that we will continue to improve on transparency when it comes to infrastructure projects."

The forum had helped voters make informed decisions before they cast their ballots this May 9.

ESSAY | Bridges and Walls

Two widespread manmade creations that put up and shaped human civilization were made as a barrier and the other one is to hand out linkage. It is but a familiar vista for us people when we traverse a bridge or see high walls yet questioning the stories or rationale behind these two never tickled our imaginations. Yes, my mind is playing with me. I never thought that from comparing the San Juanico Bridge and the Walls of Manila, not in the degree of aesthetic value but through simple symbolism can bring me amusement and curiosity.

"Connecting the gaps," this is the main role of bridges even thousands of years ago as bridges to our ancestors in order for them to travel and survive. It is also the most important tool for religion and conquerors since spreading of beliefs would require them to construct a bridge to reach out different places and uplift economic growth. Transportation greatly affects the economic profile of a certain place. Church will never be far away from a bridge. I remember watching a Kara David documentary with my brother that tackled the histories of several known and hidden bridges in the country. It is really amazing and frustrating as well when the facts behind their construction started to unfold forced labor and yet exceedingly stunning outcome was created. The importance and significance of bridges along with their bitter and sweet histories continue to support the ideals of progress and connecting of past and present. They may differ in designs, names, or even types of materials; bridges will always be identical in purpose!

Walls are always labeled as "dividers." They may be tall and proud but some became perfect ruins. Walls are also associated with pride and greed. They usually differ in height, length, and form but never in being a partition. People are too petrified when it comes to invasion and things that could influence or alter their cultures and ways of living. This is the best way to say "Hey, do not overstep!" Building a fence is a natural way of both securing and marking desired or owned territories. Positivity and confidence are assured to the people in the fortification yet it serves a clear motivation and target as different type of people outside the barricade would be devoted to breaking and seeing the wall's ruins. Many walls provided sure victories and some became object of weakness and failures after falling from bloody battles. Setting barriers of different nations against each other even up to this day is still a common thing to ponder on. We live with an unseen wall and it's even worse if I may add. Restrictions or sanctions create a great division. People under these conditions suffer the weight and toll. Even Parthenon suffered from destruction. No matter how hard or old a wall is, there's always a way to shake and put it flat to the ground.

I never manage to put these two things away from irony. Bridges and walls may be similar in the aspect of architecture but their difference when it comes to purpose is irrefutable. There was this tag line saying, "People are too busy building fences rather than creating bridges." Yes, it sounds righteous when we look at it as a way for peace and humanity. The idea of reaching to others rather than dividing and producing selfish ideologies is a good way to uphold moral responsibility and eliminate the possibility of a chaotic environment. It's time to be watchful in making a better way to provide safety and security without others being harmed. Bridges and walls are pillars of society, symbolic or by plain use and purpose. We may be able to dictate their choice and strategies in securing their beliefs but we can always persuade them. I hope that we may appreciate more the reasons behind the construction than its actual design. When your curiosity strikes, start by getting the name or the former name of those two common things near you, you'll be surprised to hear out stories and facts that served as half of their foundations!
