These questions and more will be tackled during the “Copyright 101 and Publishing Contracts” session by the PaperKat Books, Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society - FILCOLS, and Kahel Press!
Join us on November 16 (Saturday) from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Estancia at Capitol Commons. Learn the basics of copyright from long-time copyright advocates Alvin Buenaventura and Beverly Wico Siy. Identify what could be some red flags and green flags in publishing contracts with Ruth Valorie Wowie Catabijan, the editor of Kahel Press.
About The Guest Speakers
Alvin Buenaventura is the executive director of the Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society, Inc. (FILCOLS), the only collective management organization (CMO) in the text and image sector serving the book publishing industry and accredited by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.
Under his watch, FILCOLS grew from eight members in 2009 to more than 700 rightsholders which include National Artists, award-winning authors, and esteemed publishers; and on April 14, 2015, FILCOLS received recognition as a finalist in the London Book Fair’s International Excellence Award for copyright protection.
Aside from local engagements, Alvin made presentations on publishing and copyright issues before CMO events held in Argentina, Indonesia, Japan, Norway, Slovenia, South Korea, Thailand, the USA, and the UK.

Si Beverly Wico Siy ay isang nanay na manunulat, tagasalin at copyright advocate. Aktibo si Bebang sa larangan ng publishing. Isa siya sa mga Book Champion at Intellectual Property Ambassador ng ating bansa noong 2015.
Siya ay nakalikha at nakapaglathala ng labing-isang aklat sa pamamagitan ng pagsusulat, pagsasalin, pagpapatnugot at pag-i-illustrate. Naglilingkod siya ngayon sa Intertextual Division sa patnubay ng CCP Cultural Content Department. Siya ay nakatira sa Bacoor, Cavite kasama ang kanyang asawa at mga anak.

Ruth Valorie Wowie Catabijan is the business development manager of Saint Matthew's Publishing Corporation and the editor of its children’s book imprint, Kahel Press. She is a finalist of the Innovative Leaders Scholarship of the Yale Publishing Course class of 2015, a fellow of the Asian Publishers Fellowship Program in Seoul in 2018, and one of seven mentees of the Performance Coaching Program of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) andVisang Education in Seoul in 2019. She is also a board member of FILCOLS.
