Hay nako? HAY NA(K)Q!

The kings of Taft and Diliman met up at the SM Mall of Asia Arena last night, December 11, 2024, to settle whether the confetti would fall for UP or if the parties for either side would have to wait until the weekend.

As foes familiar with each other do, UP and DLSU seemed to have made adjustments against each other after their first meet in the finals series. Knowing how the Archers power through offense, the Maroons responded with a fortified defense that would cushion their trail early in the first half. In turn, understanding how UP likes to start slow and end strong, DLSU knew not to be complacent at the turn of every quarter. Proving just how both teams hunger for the title.

Led by Cagulangan, UP, in true Maroon fashion, reclaimed the lead of the game in a third quarter blitz that would then carry on in the fourth quarter—well, at least, for the most part. With how crucial the game would be, back-to-back MVP Kevin Quiambao knew that it was now or never, so, when the opportunity came as UP’s Torres incurred an unsportsmanlike foul that then changed the energy in the arena, KQ knew to capitalize on this shift of energy, and gave DLSU a three-pointer that trimmed UP’s embattled lead within hands’ reach.

Even the crowd was feeling this momentum change too. The dominant sea of Maroon in the arena, although still as passionate, knew that the wind no longer blew on their side as the awakened green faithful roared and responded back, carrying their boys to confidence, and eventually to clinch game two by a point, forcing UP to a do-or-die match at the Big Dome on December 15.

Truly, knowing when to peak is as essential as the peak itself, Game 2 proves that State U found their groove but now they must lock in to sustain their momentum, especially now as they face a torrential challenge––to break the runner-up streak in a coliseum that has witnessed their most heart shattering losses.

UP community, ilaban natin ito! Let’s paint the coliseum maroon ONCE MORE.

REVIEW NA ULIT, ISKO. NO WEDNESDAY PARTIES. ✋🏻

The celebrations at Diliman have to wait because the DLSU Green Archers prefer parties during the weekend instead. 😤

State U will now face Taft’s defending champions in a do-or-die match on Dec. 15 at the Big Dome.

Will UP break the runner-up streak as DLSU seeks to rebuild a dynasty or will the Maroons taste another chip once more?

Yesterday’s heartbreaks just put up the stakes.

Look back at their last match in Season 87 through this gut-wrenching, yet beautiful set.

We know you want more of them. With new talents we’re yet to see in the spotlight, a brighter future and a stronger return is possible for UP MFT.

UP draws first blood in the Finals rematch against DLSU! ❤️✊🏼

Despite trailing 41-37 at the first half, State U turned the tide in the second half and never looked back!

JD Cagulangan, Quentin Millora-Brown, and Francis Lopez played their hearts out and led the team to a victory. State U overcame an unreal 18-point first-half performance from MVP Kevin Quiambao by holding him to just one point in the second half -- thanks to Jacob Bayla's heroic defensive efforts. The total team effort from the Fighting Maroons was enough to take the first W in the Best-of-three battle against the DLSU Green Archers. In the fourth quarter, Gerry Abadiano made tough shots that bagged the victory for the Fighting Maroons, ending all hopes of the patented Green Archer comeback run.

State U is one win away from being crowned champions in the 87th season of the UAAP. Game 2 of the Finals will be on December 11, Wednesday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
