“The war memoirs of Colonel Narciso Manzano are an important addition to the personal narratives of Filipinos in World War II. Manzano was a professional soldier who rose to field officer rank in the US Army through merit, without having graduated from a military academy. He was well known to MacArthur and his staff officers but his exploits were seldom reported in detail. In these memoirs, Manzano narrates his experiences, from growing up in Atimonan (Quezon Province, Philippines) to joining the US Army and, especially vividly, his wartime achievements in the defense campaign and as a guerrilla operative. Frank and oftentimes critical, this is a perspective no one but Col. Manzano can tell. This is the first time many details of the resistance movement are published. It is high time that the story of this genuine Filipino hero was told, in his own words. It is a story to inspire, and also to learn from.”

From August 2016 to October 2018, the writer Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz maintained a weekly column in the Davao daily Mindanao Times. Her essays there, collected in this book for the first time, provide a snapshot of the sociopolitical life of Davao City and the country in the first half of Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency from the point of view of a Mindanawon creative writer. This book provides material evidence of the writing that led to the author’s political persecution as well as her experiments to embody her le***an identity in the space of the opinion column. Lugar Lang is ultimately a testament to the persistence of a writer’s dissent within the repressive environment of the bailiwick of the Dutertes.

Ang PRPB Book Rebyu ng Pinoy Reads Pinoy Books ay nagtatampok ng mga opinyon at saloobin ukol sa mga akdang Pinoy na nabasa ng aming mga miyembro. Nilalayon nitong pagyamanin at ipagpatuloy ang diskusyon, at magsilbing mungkahing aklat sa mga nagnanais pang tuklasin ang ating panitikan.

Natapos din sa wakas ang 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀 ni Vida Cruz-Borja.

Maganda ang atake ng may-akda sa mga kuwentong-bayan at pagmo-modernize sa mga ito. Iba-iba rin ang estilo na ginamit sa bawat kuwento.

Paborito ko rito ang 𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, pero ewan ko ba kung impluwensiya lang ba ng pagiging Terry Pratchett style niya. Medyo mixed feelings ako sa pagka-Terry Pratchett nito dahil parang nangibabaw ang estilo ni TP kesa sa manunulat. Gayumpaman magandang kuwento rin ito na binabaligtad ang karaniwang kuwento tungkol sa Chosen One.

Isa pang paborito ko ang 𝘐𝘯𝘬: 𝘈 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺. Isa namang retelling ng Pygmalion and Galatea pero ibang-iba na siya mula sa orihinal.

At huli sa mga paborito ko, 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘵 𝘐𝘵𝘴 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯. Convincing ang love story dito at sinusubvert ang mga gender roles.

Pansin ko rin sa mga kuwento ni Vida Cruz-Borja, mahilig siya magkuwento ng isang malawakang kuwento. Ang mga kontemporaryong kuwento ngayon, madalas isang eksena lang, pero parang buong buhay ang kinukuwento ng manunulat sa iilang pahina.
