This comes after 1,769 cases were listed from January to February this year. 10 fatalities due to the virus have also been recorded in just the past two weeks.

Following recent events, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has urged the public to stay vigilant and be on alert as the mosquito-borne disease continues to spread among residential communities.

From bustling hallways with couples holding hands to the bright red roses wrapped in colorful ribbons, Valentine’s Day is often seen through the lens of romance. However, celebrating love today goes beyond the love of intimate partners; it also honors the love all around us in our everyday lives.

VOYAGER: A recently published study on February 10 warns that last year's record-breaking temperatures may mark the beginning of a persistent trend in which global temperatures exceed 1.5°C above normal.

In 2015, nearly 200 nations pledged under the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels while striving to cap it at 1.5°C. This treaty marked the first time both developed and developing nations united in making concrete climate action commitments. However, challenges such as the United States’ withdrawal from the agreement have hindered climate change mitigation efforts.

While a single year above the 1.5°C threshold does not violate the Paris Agreement’s long-term goals, the researchers warn that without immediate and stringent emissions reductions, the world could permanently surpass this limit within the next decade.

This warming milestone carries immediate local implications, including extreme weather events, stronger typhoons, and heightened health risks from intensifying heat waves. If temperatures continue to rise, catastrophic consequences could follow, such as the complete melting of polar ice caps and a massive increase in global sea levels.

ICYMI: Labor rights activist and senatorial candidate Leody de Guzman was on campus today, February 13, for a conversation on the youth’s role in mass movements. Led by the Partido Pandayan Organizing Committee, the event was held at the benches in front of Kostka Extension from 11 AM to 12:30 PM.

de Guzman emphasized the importance of youth participation in shaping national policies, particularly in the fight against political dynasties and systemic labor exploitation.

He also tackled campus issues, including the new Ateneo e-jeep express lane and concerns surrounding transparency from the administration, particularly in releasing the Campus Master Plan and ensuring that students are heard in decision-making processes.

ELECTION UPDATE: Internet personality and medical doctor Willie Ong has announced his withdrawal from the senatorial race, citing reasons related to his recent abdominal cancer diagnosis.

Ong made the announcement via his official page, which was later confirmed by his wife, fellow doctor Liza, and his affiliated party, Aksyon Demokratiko.

Ong performed relatively well in surveys published in the first months after the 2022 elections, consistently placing in the top 12. His support only steadily decreased after he shared his cancer diagnosis in September last year, culminating with his 19th and 17th placements in the latest PulseAsia and OCTA Research surveys, respectively.

Prior to this senatorial run, Ong ran for the vice presidency in 2022 as the running mate of then-Manila mayor Isko Moreno, ultimately placing 4th. He also vied for a seat at the Senate in 2019, finishing 18th overall in the said election bid.

VOYAGER: The National Poison Management and Control Center has reported that methamphetamine and paracetamol are the leading causes of acute poisoning among adults in in-patient cases and telephone referrals, respectively. The agency released these findings in a bulletin last February 10.

Among pediatric cases, paracetamol is the leading cause of acute poisoning in both in-patient and telephone referrals.

Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is an over-the-counter drug used to treat fever and mild to moderate pain. The US Food and Drug Authority recommends a maximum of 4000mg acetaminophen intake within 24 hours for adults.

Meanwhile, methamphetamine is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that can produce stimulant effects such as feelings of euphoria and increased energy. Overdose symptoms may include life-threatening side effects such as breathing difficulties or an increased risk of a heart attack.

The pharmaceutical’s data were based on cases at the Philippine General Hospital.

ELECTION UPDATE: The official campaign period for the 2025 senatorial and party-list elections formally begins today, February 11. This also signals that the nation has exactly 90 days before the general election on May 12.

Only senatorial candidates and party-list nominees may start their campaigns, as the campaign period for the local elections will commence on March 28, 45 days before the election.

In a statement made by Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman George Garcia, candidates are reminded to adhere to campaigning guidelines. The reminder comes in response to reports of "premature campaigning," a claim that was earlier rebuked by the polling body since individuals are not yet classified as candidates until the commencement of the election season.

While campaigning may be permitted until May 10 to give way for election silence on May 11, there will be pauses on April 17 and 18, to give way for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, respectively.

After the elections, the Statements of Contribution and Expenditures will be posted publicly by the COMELEC for the first time, allowing voters to scrutinize the filings made by candidates.

LOOK: The Quezon City Government has released an updated traffic advisory for its SPARK Project along Maginhawa Street, detailing changes to barriers, parklets, and traffic flow.

Among the updates is the replacement of plant box barriers with traffic cones in the active mobility lane, which will be deployed daily from 7 PM to 9 AM. Meanwhile, pocket parklets will be removed from the area, except for those near the Teachers Village East Barangay Hall.

The stretch of Maginhawa Street from Magiting to Masinsinan is also set to revert to a two-way traffic scheme starting 12 PM on February 9.

Launched last November as a test run, the SPARK Project is a people-centered active mobility initiative aimed at transforming urban spaces into more cyclable and walkable roads.

VOYAGER: The Ateneo Institute of Sustainability (AIS) released its 4th sustainability report, covering the Ateneo’s journey toward integral ecology during the pandemic from 2019 to 2022. Among other focuses, the report emphasized the University's progress toward its Laudato Si' Action Program.

The report noted relevant data on the University's environmental resource and management—such as electricity consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, wastewater recycling, and solid waste management.

The report also reflected on recent key milestones, including the establishment of the Gokongwei Brothers School of Education and Learning Design, as well as Ateneo’s shift to full co-education in Basic Education.

Furthermore, the report covered the Ateneo’s pandemic response initiatives, such as Blue Aid for employee support, and FASSTER, a cloud-based disease surveillance tool.
