Get ready for our first Spec Fic Grok featuring horror writer Karl R. De Mesa - Author!

Karl is the author of the books of horror "News of the Shaman" and "Damaged People", as well as the non-fiction collections "Report from the Abyss" and "Radiant Void"— both shortlisted in the Philippine Nat'l Book Awards. His latest book is the reportage collection "Calling Out the Destruction."

He works as a longreads journalist and photographer and has reported on stories in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Myanmar, and Singapore. His stories and photo essays have appeared on outlets like Vice Asia, CNN Ph Life, Star and Crescent (UK), NME Asia, and The Likhaan Journal of Phil Lit.

When he's not writing he teaches Muay Thai and commentates on combat sports. His music as Dark Horse Ph can be found on Bandcamp and Spotify.
