They'll be screening our film the Fishermen of Scarborough Shoal, with a talkback after. Karol Ilagan is a Philippine journalist and a journalism educator. Before joining the faculty of the University of the Philippines Diliman, she led investigations and collaborations at the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.

She is a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and a Fellow of the Pulitzer Center’s Rainforest Investigations and AI Accountability networks.

🔸 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲” 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶

Shirin Bhandari is an independent writer, photographer, and documentary filmmaker based in Metro Manila. She is a graduate of the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts. Her work has been featured in the Pulitzer Center, SCMP, Women's Media Center, Slate, CNN, Roads and Kingdoms, Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, and VICE among others. Bhandari is a Logan Nonfiction Fellow and a member of the nonprofit group, Women Photograph.

Her current film, “The Fishermen Snared in the Scarborough Shoal Dispute” is supported by the Pulitzer Center, SCMP, and Roads and Kingdoms. It had its first US Screening at the DC Environmental Film Festival last March 2024.

𝕀𝕗 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕎𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕤 ℂ𝕒𝕟 𝕋𝕒𝕝𝕜 is an exhibit dialoguing with investigative reports from the Pulitzer Center’s Rainforest Reporting Grant on the Philippines’ natural environment.

Running from December 12, 2024 onwards, three artists, Eunice Sanchez, Kookoo Ramos-Cruda, and Resty Flores, will present works in Escolta, each telling a story that calls attention, sounds the alarm, but also shows solutions moving forward.

This project is co-presented by Pulitzer Center and 98B COLLABoratory. Curation by Lk Rigor.
