Among the 13 Asian in competition, India, Korea, Iran, China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Australia each contributed one film; Both Japan and Vietnam have 02 films selected. Under such a commercial-focused film industry, Vietnam’s two participating films are quite special for the fact that both are art films with distinct creative personalities, and are also first feature films of two young directors who have been honored at several prestigious film festivals: Cu li never cries by Pham Ngoc Lan and Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell by Pham Thien An. DANAFF II’s Award will help Asian filmmakers leave a mark on the film scene, finger-crossed.

It is our hope that the awards of DANAFF II will help our selected filmmakers leave their remarks on the cinematic geography.

Liên hoan phim Châu Á Đà Nẵng bước vào mùa thứ Hai với một tuyển chọn các phim Châu Á dự thi khá phong phú, đa dạng. Phong phú bởi có những phim mới, lần đầu chiếu ở Châu Á hoặc thậm chí trên thế giới đi bên cạnh những phim đã đạt “thành tích” ở đâu đó; có những phim của các đạo diễn trẻ và phim đầu tay bên cạnh những phim của các nhà làm phim có tiếng; có những phim độc lập (indie film) “thuần chất” bên cạnh phim thuộc dòng “mainstream” dành cho số đông khán giả. Lý do của sự chọn lựa này bởi vì DANAFF là một Liên hoan phim rất trẻ, có các nhóm khán giả rất khác nhau và chưa định hình một tầng lớp “khán giả của Liên hoan phim”.

Nếu chỉ đi theo một dòng phim - ví dụ “indie” hoặc “mainstream”- thì sẽ không đáp ứng được nguyện vọng của đông đảo những người mong ngóng được đến với Liên hoan phim. Trong 13 bộ phim Châu Á dự thi, các nền điện ảnh Ấn Độ, Hàn Quốc, Iran, Trung Quốc, Hồng Kông (Trung Quốc), Indonesia, Philippies, Malaysia, Australia mỗi nước hoặc vùng lãnh thổ góp mặt một phim. Riêng Nhật Bản và Việt Nam mỗi nước có hai tác phẩm được chọn dự thi. Việt Nam góp mặt hai bộ phim dự thi khá đặc biệt đối với một nền điện ảnh đang chủ yếu đi theo xu thế phim “ăn khách” phục vụ thị trường.

Đó hai bộ phim nghệ thuật mang cá tính sáng tạo, cũng là hai phim truyện đầu tay của hai đạo diễn trẻ, từng được vinh danh ở các liên hoan phim danh tiếng: Cu li không bao giờ khóc của Phạm Ngọc Lân và Bên trong vỏ kén vàng của Phạm Thiên Ân.

Da Nang Asian Film Festival comes back with its second edition accompanied by a diverse selection of Asian films including films premiered for the first time in Asia or even the world, alongside with seasoned films that have attained a collection of achievements. There are films by young directors and debut films alongside with films by renowned filmmakers. In addition to mainstream films catering to a wide audience, there are also exclusive indie films that offer a more niche viewing experience. DANAFF made this particular choice for theact that as a new film festival, it has very diverse audience groups and has not yet formed its specific audience. Had the festival made the choice for only one genre of film, either “indie” or “mainstream”. It would not have met the aspirations of many people who look forward to coming and participating in our events.
